More frightening than any battlefield, Koba stepped up and into the carriage to join his wife. Gwen sitting on one side of the bench seat huddled into the corner, Koba sat on the opposing side of the carriage as to not crowd her. Still never having their first night, Koba could not help but stare as his gaze zeroed in on the wet redness of Gwen’s eyes. A sudden stab in his mind and gut at the sight of her, Koba was unsure what had upset Gwen in the short time he had been gone. Leaving so suddenly Koba realised his first mistake as his words ground out. “Was someone disrespectful to you in my absence Gwen?” Gwen’s body visibly quivering beneath the pink ruffles of her dress, Koba was not even sure she had heard his words when he was given no acknowledgement. “Gwen?”
Koba’s voice stronger this time, Gwen flinched almost jumping in her seat as her eyes set upon Koba. Using all her strength to not crumple into a pile back on the floor, Gwen looked to Koba as her body still trembled while her hands gripped to the excessive material of her dress. “Sorry, I… this, I’m sorry…” Her head lowering, Gwen was beside herself barely able to get a word out of her lips as the claustrophobia remained strong. Koba immediately jostling the carriage as he moved to her side, his hand took her chin as his other pressed to her forehead. A dampness meeting his flesh, Koba frowned as he spoke out once more.
“Are you unwell Gwen?” The question sitting in the air untouched, Gwen’s mind went a blank at Koba’s touch. Her heart racing faster than before, she could not even fathom talking as Koba continued to stare at her. With a heavy exhalation of breath, Koba banged against the carriage twice setting the movement of the carriage in motion. Taking the sword and cloak from his back, Koba noted the staleness of the carriage as he ripped back the curtains on one side, before reaching over to do the same on Gwen’s side. Noting a giant breath of relief from Gwen, Koba watched as her eyes shot to the window and light with sincerity. “You are afraid of the dark Gwen.”
Gwen’s eyes shooting back to Koba, she thought best not to contradict his words not wanting to explain further. Now knowing the windows were an option to open, this would be an easy issue to avoid in the future. “Thank you.” Gwen’s squeak of a voice satisfying Koba, he sat back into the chair beside her. His body dwarfing her own, the edge of his leg touching the ruffles of her dress sizzled in the silence. Dressed like a pink cupcake, it was nothing like the last time he has seen her. So delicate, Koba feared a heavy blow of the wind would topple her over. The dress swimming around her, Koba had concern that even the weight of the dress would be too much. Gwen herself in his eyes seemed to need, to suit something of much simpler design.
A new fear spiking in Koba, he felt instantly inferior as he thought to have Gwen dress simpler. She was a Duchess, she was used to the fine things in life and he would provide whatever she needed. Whatever she wanted. A man of means now, he would give her any and every comfort that she so desired. “That is a beautiful dress, though much different to the last time I saw you.” Koba’s words leading Gwen to a wide eyed stare.
“You saw me before Your Grace?” The question in Gwen’s mind running. She could not remember having ever seen Koba before this morning. She never left her family estate, and was not in a role within the family where she was expected to meet and entertain guests.
“Five years ago, before I had even received my title as Duke, I came to your family estate. I saw you out in the garden when the events came to an end.” A moment of hesitation, Koba smiled richly on the inside as he admitted only the trust, “I believe you were in your sleepwear.” Koba adverting his eyes for a moment, Gwen blushed red knowing all too well the nighty she would have worn. White and long it was not something she should have worn outside, and yet she found herself in it much of the time unable to endure the lack of breath from wearing a corset. Neglecting to wear it for the longest time, her father had corsets sewn into every dress she owned as to force the matter. Clearing his throat, Koba spoke again. “It was of course only for a moment, and by accident that I had stumbled upon you.”
Perking up the courage to speak. “It was, this dress that is, it was Duke Lin… my brother’s gift to me for today.”
“When we return, you may dress however you like. And Gwen, do not call me Your Grace, you are my wife, my equal.” Koba feeling much more at ease having heard her voice and words transpiring between them, his concern slightly lessened as his comfort grew in the space between them. The redness in Gwen’s eyes fading, Koba only hoped he would not see her upset again. Sneaking more glances at her as the ride continued, Koba watched her perfect blond hair rolled tightly to her head as Gwen ever so often pulled lightly at areas that were clearly too tight. Wanting to reach out and undo her hair watching it tumble down her body, Koba could not help thinking of their impending first night. The mere thought sent his body alight with a pain more suspenseful than anything he had previously experienced, he just watched on as he crossed his legs willing his excitement to douse.
