Flora's POV
They were getting closer and closer. And I ran out of options just when I thought it was the end for me. A hand emerging from the shadows, grabbing me by the collar into a dark alley, it was a man, with a tall figure wearing a hat like those that detectives do wear.
"Keep quiet and don't make any noise" He said covering my mouth, followed by the growling of the men as they venture into a wild goose chase.
"Am going to let go of you, but you have to promise to remain silent." The man said, then I nodded in affirmation.
"Do you have anywhere to go" He said in a collected tone. With tears in my eyes I shook my head.
"This is not a place for you to be in, but you can come with me and I'll teach you the way to survive in this accursed world" the man said.
Everything about this man was strange, why did he save me, why was he trying to protect me, was there something more to this? Those questions lingered in the corner of my head but I was blinded by the rage coursing through my veins, the only thing in my mind was ravage, and I vowed to get it.
I nodded my head in affirmation to his proposal. Then we walked further into the darkness of the alley.
(Twelve years later)
The city was a beast that swallowed the weak whole without a trace. I had learned that the hard way. Every day was a fight, a fight for food, a fight for shelter.
A fight to protect the orphaned children I had come to see as my family.
The fire had taken everything—my home, my mother, my past. And now, all I had was the cold night air against my skin, the weight of an empty stomach, and the amulet resting against my chest.
And.... Mr Wallace, the man who saved me years ago, and who also abandoned me at a point in time, i hated him with all my life ever since that unfaithful day, without leaving as much as a goodbye letter, rage boiled up in me as i realized that i kept on loosing everyone i could call family.Wallace was like the dad I never had, or so I thought.
And now .....
I had become a ghost blending into the dark alleys, unseen and forgotten-- i had no past, no future-- just the present. Just survival.
I didn’t know why my mother had given it to me before the flames consumed her. I didn’t know why she had whispered "Never lose this" with such desperation.
But I knew one thing. I had to survive. Even if it meant stealing from the wolves.
The Caine Mafia was the most feared syndicate in the city, ruling the underworld with merciless and ruthless efficiency. No one crossed them and lived to tell the tale.
But I had no choice.
In this city, it was a matter of survival of the fittest. Their shipment was arriving tonight—black market goods worth a fortune. Just one crate could buy food for the orphaned children I had been protecting in the alleys.
I had done my research, just like I always did. The docks were heavily guarded, but the east warehouse had a blind spot. A perfect opening, as I smiled sinisterly.
I crouched behind a stack of crates, watching as the guards patrolled. Their presence meant only one thing—this was an important shipment. Even better, because it will be worth the steal.
I moved swiftly, my body a shadow in the night. With practiced ease, I slipped past the guards, pressing myself against the wooden crates.
One. Two. Three. I counted my breaths, steadying my hands as I reached for a crowbar. One crate. That’s all I needed.
I wedged the crowbar into the lid, slowly prying it open.
But before I could lift it— A deep, cold voice cut through the silence. “You must have a death wish.” My blood ran cold. I turned around swiftly, my heart slamming against my ribs—
And froze.
A tall figure stood in the shadows, golden eyes burning like fire in the dark. Even in the dim lighting, I could see the power of the aura coiling around him like a storm.
Dominick Caine. The Alpha. The King of the underworld. The last person I ever wanted to cross.
And I had just been caught stealing from him. I moved on instinct, dropping the crowbar, I lunged forward, attempting to dodge past him—but I never even got close.
He was faster. Much faster. I managed to run several meters from him as I looked back to know whether he was on my tail.
He was gone. In the blink of an eye, a strong hand wrapped around my throat, pinning me against the crate. I gasped, fingers clawing at his wrist, but his grip wasn’t tight enough to cut off my air—just enough to hold me in place.
A warning. His face was close, his golden eyes locked onto mine. “You’re either very bold or very stupid,” he murmured, his voice calm, controlled, and unwavering. My pulse pounded against my ribs. I had spent years avoiding powerful men like him. And now? Now I was at his mercy.
I clenched my jaw. “Let me go.”
His lips curled into something almost amused. “You break into my warehouse, try to steal from me, and now you’re giving orders?”
His grip tightened slightly, just enough to make my breath hitch.I glared at him, refusing to cower. “I t-ake wh-at I need to sur-vive. It’s-- not personal.” as I struggled to speak. His expression darkened, amusement vanishing like smoke. “Survival?”
Something unreadable passed through his eyes before his voice dropped lower.
“Then tell me, little thief.” His fingers brushed against my throat, a whisper of contact that sent an involuntary shiver down my spine. “How do you plan to survive… when you just made an enemy out of me?”
I swallowed hard. I had made a mistake. A very, very big mistake. And there was no way out of it now. His gazed then lowered down, and suddenly his entire body went rigid.
His grip loosened and his golden eyes widened , shock flashing across his face for just a second-- so quick I almost missed it. He stared at my chest-- no, at the amulet resting against my skin. I was able to catch my breath a little.
Why was he looking at me like that? Hesitant. "Where did you get this"His voice was different now. Lower, tense.
It wasn't as if he wanted to know but it was that he needed to know. I narrowed my eyes. Why did he care? Before I could answer, footsteps pounded against the dock. The guards had noticed the commotion. One of them ran up, his face paling the moment he saw who had caught me.
“A-Alpha,” he stammered. “What should we do with her?”I stiffened. Alpha. That word held weight.
Dominick didn’t even glance at him. His golden eyes remained locked onto mine, studying me with an intensity that made my stomach tighten.
"I said, where did you get this?" Dominick asked again with a tone of uncontrollable rage capable of controlling an army and his golden eyes being dragged into an abyss of a red blood thirsty colour, grinning his teeth and growling, his aura was all over the place, even the guards dared not utter a word. Me, being at the center of it all, felt like being swallowed by the earth of disappearing, as it was like I was paralyzed, I couldn't breathe, not because of the grip, but because of the fear.
Dominick's claws grow longer and longer, "I asked you a question!" he yelled infuriatingly, then he clawed at me.
The amulet glows... "Blood....?"
Dominick's eyes wide opened.
