Chapter 7 What a Best Friend

"I told you guys to be nicer to Nina but you didn't listen" Camila who awkwardly ate her food wasn't comfortable with the stare that everyone on the table was giving her.
"Hey! Are you a contract worker?" One of the girls called Anna who alongside Olivia bullied Nina in college asked in disbelief.
"Who said that? Was it Nina?" Camila asked shockingly.
" Yes. She said you're a contract worker and she was the one who referred you to the company. She also said she is now a full-time employee and that she newly got promoted"
Camila ranked her brain thinking of what to say. She didn't want to be humiliated " Yes she just got promoted but the part of her referring me to the company isn't true. I was the one that referred her"
" Okay then if what you say is true, then show us your card"
Camila started feeling anxious. The status on her card showed contract worker and if she showed them, they would instantly know that she was lying so she had to think of something to say.
"I left my card at home" Camila quickly uttered.
" Are you joking? You said you were the one that referred her to the company and you left your card at home and I have no problem with that but how is it possible that she got promoted before you when you were the one that got her a job?"
Olivia just couldn't believe that she had been bullying an innocent person since college. Thinking about the humiliation she and her girls gave Nina back in college, she felt horrible.
"Apart from that, why did you lie about dating Daniel?" Williams who has been thinking about everything that occurred today suddenly asked.
After college, no one could reach Daniel and Camila suddenly wondered what made him show up. She was confident in lying about her relationship with Daniel because she knew no one was going to ever see him to ask any questions but how he suddenly appeared just didn't make sense.
Camila suddenly laughed trying to clear the awkward atmosphere that surrounded the table "Are you guys still on that? It's been more than five years now since we all graduated from college and_"
" Are you kidding me? You've been playing us with your lies. Nina also said you were the one who gave her that fake earring. Is that true? " Anna asked.
" Does this mean that Nina wasn't copying or taking anything from you but rather, you were the one copying her? Have you been trying to screw her over? "Williams asked, glaring at Camila who he suddenly saw as as a cunning bastard.
"No, I can't do that. She is my bestfriend" Camila defended.
" So why did you lie against your best friend? What kind of best friend are you? " Olivia asked and Camila couldn't take it anymore. They were asking too many questions and it was pissing her off.
Camila suddenly stood up furiously as she banged her both hands on the table "All of you shut up. I didn't tell you to bully her. You bullied her of your own will so don't shout or question me" Camila said in a high-pitched voice making everyone's eyes suddenly turn to her.
"Wow, what a creatively crazy psychopath. You lied against your best friend for so many years and made other people hurt her. If they were best friends like you everywhere, then I rather stay alone than have a best friend. Let's go girls" Olivia stood up and so did her friends.
Williams sat for some seconds as he looked at Camila in disgust. He just couldn't see her as the smart pretty girl he saw her as before. He suddenly had a feeling of dislike for Camila. He then stood up and left the restaurant.
At that table, Olivia, Jane, Camila, Anna, and Williams were the only people who attended the same college as Nina. Nina was bullied both in college and at home.
Other workers from the company who were still around whispered among themselves. They discussed what recently happened and that just made Camila angry.
She wanted to humiliate and teach Nina a lesson for not helping her with her sleeves but she got humiliated instead. Even the earrings she bought weren't even as useful as she planned.
Camila felt her nails digging into her hands as she stared at the chair that Olivia sat on in anger. She wasn't going to let this one slide. Now everyone in the company looked at her like a bad person.
Camila picked up her phone and called Nina several times but she didn't pick up. Camila thought of what she was going to tell Nina. She feared that Nina might have believed everything she heard that day. Camila sat back on her chair in anger.
"Hi Camila" Beta Jacob who realized that most of the company workers were not in the restaurant anymore looked around for Nina but he met Camila's sad face.
Camila who suddenly saw beta Jacob began to look sad. "Hi," she said, her voice barely audible.
" Where is Nina? " Beta Jacob asked.
Camila suddenly started to sob as tears streamed down her face. "I did something bad to her and she left very early. I'm trying to call her now but she is not picking up my calls".
Of course, this was just a lie to get Jacob on her side. She needed someone who could talk to Nina for her just in case Nina didn't want to speak to her.
"That okay. Don't cry, everything will be fine. You're Nina's other half and I'm sure you guys will sort yourselves as soon as possible. Just follow me to her house. I'm going there now" Camila cleaned the tears in her eyes and sniffed as she picked up her bag and followed Beta Jacob.
It was the first time Camila entered beta Jacob's car and a feeling of envy suddenly washed over Camila. Nina always had the good things but she always ended up with nothing. The thought of having Jacob and everything he owed to herself crossed her mind and she smiled wickedly.
