Chapter Five: What the Fire Left Behind

749 Words
She should have burned the letter. Told herself that a hundred times over two years. Should have thrown it in with everything else her father touched, everything that got her family killed. Instead, it lived at the bottom of her bag wrapped in cloth gone soft from handling because some stubborn part of her needed the last thing he ever wrote to her, even if it was a confession. She was reading it again when the knock came. She shoved it under the pillow, too fast, guilt all over her face before she'd crossed the room. Rex stood in the hall, and whatever he'd come to say died the second he saw her. "What's wrong?" "Nothing." "Belle." Like it was a question, not a name. "You've been like this for days. Since Selene arrived." His eyes went past her, to the pale corner of paper under the pillow, and she watched him clock it in slow motion. "What is that?" "Nothing." He stepped past her before she could stop him — Alpha instinct beating out whatever privacy he might otherwise have respected — and had the letter unfolded before she could reach it. "Don't—" Too late. He was already reading her father's cramped hand, and she watched the color leave his face at *forgive me* and *the debt* and *they'll come for what's owed, and I fear it will be paid in blood that isn't mine.* He looked up. For the first time since she'd met him, he looked less like an Alpha and more like a man who'd just felt the floor open under his own feet. "Your pack wasn't hit by rogues." He was working it out loud, each word a stone dropped in still water. "Your father made a deal. It got everyone killed." "Rex—" "And you." His eyes dropped to her arm, to the sleeve she hadn't thought to pull down, to the edge of the mark showing at her wrist. "You're not just a survivor. You're collateral." The silence after that was the loudest thing she'd ever sat inside of. "I was going to tell you," she said. A lie. They both knew it the second it left her mouth. "When?" His voice had gone quiet in a way that scared her more than shouting would have. "Before or after I sign a peace with Selene's father sitting on top of a debt that could bring an enemy bloodline down on both our territories?" "I didn't ask for this." Her voice cracked despite everything. "I didn't ask to survive. Didn't ask to be marked. Didn't ask to be your mate — and I sure as hell didn't ask to be the thing that wrecks your alliance, so don't look at me like I planned it." He didn't answer right away. Still holding the letter, knuckles white. When he looked up again, the fury had cracked into something rawer — fear, maybe, or the grief of a man realizing the thing he'd spent weeks fighting not to want was now the most dangerous variable in his territory. "Who else knows?" "No one. Until tonight." "Selene suspects something." "I know." He exhaled, long and unsteady. Neither of them moved. The bond hummed between them even now, even with a decade of consequences laid out on the bed in her father's handwriting. "I should send you away." Low. It's like it hurt on the way out. "Tonight. Before this touches the pack." "Then why," Belle said, "haven't you moved?" He didn't have an answer for that. It told her everything she needed to know about how much trouble they were already in. He set the letter down on the desk, carefully, like it might tear if he wasn't gentle with it, and for a long moment, neither of them spoke. The candle had burned down to almost nothing. Somewhere outside, a night bird called twice and went quiet. "I need to think," he said finally. Not unkind. Just tired, in a way she hadn't seen on him before. "Not about whether to send you away. About what comes next if I don't." "Take your time." She meant it as an edge, and it came out softer than that. "I'm not going anywhere tonight." He nodded once, and she left him there with the letter and the dead candle, and went back to her room to lie awake and listen to a house that suddenly felt far less safe than it had that morning.
