Chapter 4

Cassandra...

I’ve always been one to protect myself first before anyone else, but when I met Damon that all changed. I wanted to make sure he survived in the drastic supernatural world where vampire and witches and werewolves existed so when he asked for help I didn’t hesitate even though it’d been a while, I also missed my best friend. I was so scared to admit my feelings to Damon because of his whole addiction to rescuing Katherine from the tomb she was supposedly in. I kept my guard up but that never stopped me from having fun with him, but now Katherine was back I thought things would be different between us both.

But it was only for a couple of days seen as though everything went to mess when Katherine was out of the tomb, Katherine tried to get information out of me of the location of the dead witches but she kind of forgot how much older and stronger I was, surprisingly Damon and Stefan didn’t bat an eyelash when I staked her just below the heart, purposefully missing the heart that was so screwed up in Katherine.

The dead witches location was something everyone was interested in and I wasn’t going to share that information with anyone while Katherine was within hearing range, I couldn’t trust her with anything. I found out why everyone was so interested in it thanks to Bonnie and Stefan trying to get Elijah’s witches - Luka and Jonas - onto our side, they shared that Elijah didn’t have a weapon to kill Klaus but that he believed if a witch could Chanel enough power a weapon wouldn’t be needed.

“What’s on your mid buttercup?” I looked over at Damon shaking my head to get rid of my thoughts. “Nothing just thinking of the backstabbing b***h” I shrugged as I looked out at the Salvatore property, the three of us, myself, Damon and Stefan was currently sat outside waiting for Elena to finish the process of having the house put into her name to protect herself. “Katherine has no idea that Bonnie got her powers back did she?” Stefan spoke up making me chuckle shaking my head. “Nope and she didn’t even know where me and Damon took her and Jeremy to do yesterday” I spoke up making me smirk as we had the upper hand because Katherine doesn’t know anything.

After getting away from Katherine myself and Damon took Bonnie and little Gilbert to the house where the witches was burnt so she could harness their powers, so she’s literally our secret weapon, a weapon that Katherine can’t blabber to Klaus now she’s in Klaus’s hands thanks to Isobel been compelled to get Katherine and the moonstone to him and Elena to watch her biological mother burn after her job was finished.

“Now we just need to find him” Damon spoke once again bringing me out of my thoughts. “Can she do one of those witch tracking spells?” He questioned making me shake my head. “Not without something that belongs to Klaus and since we don’t have anything of his the answer is a big fat no” I sighed because it would be nice if it was that easy. “Do you think she’s dead?” Damon questioned making me look at him from the corner of my eye, was he seriously worried about Katherine?

“No, well if I was him I wouldn’t kill her straight away. If I’d been wanting revenge for over 500 years and she’d escaped me every time I’d torture her until she wished she was dead” They bother looked at me raising my eyebrows. “What I was just saying” I chuckled just as the main door to the house opened so Elena could let Mr Henry out and us in, but of course Damon and Stefan like the idiots they are tried to just walk through making me chuckle. “Idiots”

“I’m sorry, I completely forgot. Stefan would you like to come inside my house?” She asked with a smile making me and Damon look at each other was she seriously trying to keep us out? Especially when we’re trying to save her life! “I’d love to, thank you” Stefan smiled before entering. “What are we 12?” Damon questioned while I stared at because I wanted to get to the basement to get myself a blood bag seen as though I couldn’t exactly go feeding in town. “One of us is” Elena crossed her arms over her chest staring at the two of us.

“If I let you both in, do you promise to obey the owner of this house?” She questioned us making me roll my eyes. “Follow the humans rules? No” I snorted rolling my eyes she would get us killed with all her martyr acts. “You both promised, I call the shots. No lies, no secret agendas remember” She pointed making me roll my eyes. “Yes, sure now can I come in before I go feeding on the town folks” I grumbled fed up of her childish acts. “Then please, you both can come in” as soon as I stepped over the threshold I made my way down to the basement to get myself a blood bag to keep me going.

“Where they go?” I questioned looking around noticing Elena, Stefan and Bonnie had gone. “School” I shook my head. “So you give her your house as a safe house and she just goes off to school where any vampire can enter?” I laughed shaking my head. “I know you asked for my help Damon, but I didn’t think it included a suicidal doppelgänger” He shook his head looking at me. “Yeah well we agreed to her rules as she likes to keep reminding us”

“Yeah, but come on Damon we’re seriously going to worry what Elena has to say? She’s already tried to hand herself over to Klaus, and now she wants to run the show? She’s human, been in the know for a few months and she thinks she knows everything there is to know?” I pointed out making him look at me and I knew he agreed with me. “Well if she gets herself killed then that’s her fault” He shrugged making me turn in my seat as I brought my blood bag to my lips having a sip before pulling it away.

“If your not bothered about her dying then why did you call?” I questioned because it was starting to bug me. “I’m bothered if she dies because she’s Stefan’s girlfriend, but I also called you because I missed you” I stared at him shocked. “Damon you went radio silence for 5 years, it wasn’t a couple of months” I pointed out making him stare at me flicking his eyes over my face before he sighed. “I needed to figure out a couple of things” I nodded as he stood up to pour us both a glass of whiskey. “Do you wanna share?” I questioned but he shook his head making me sigh knowing he wasn’t going to budge.

So that’s what we did all morning sat and drank blood and whiskey enjoying ourselves and catching up before we was interrupted my the doppelgänger, the witch and vampire who barged in. “Erm aren’t you supposed to still be in school?” I asked raising my eyebrows, I was kinda pissed seen as though they barged in while I was straddling Damon ready to rip his clothes off, lucky for them it hadn’t gone too far.

“Klaus made an appearance” Stefan explained as I climbed off of Damon. “He compelled another student to ask me to save him the last dance at the schools 60’s dance tonight” Elena explained as I ran my hand through my hair. “Then we go to the dance and find him” Damon spoke up as he stood up from the chair he was on. “How are we gonna do that? We don’t know what he looks like” Stefan spoke like Damon’s idea was stupid.

“Well let’s face it if he wants Elena he’s gonna show himself one way or another at least if we go to the dance we’re prepared and it’s not a sneak attack. Elena will just be bait” I spoke making them look at me. “He could be anywhere at anytime Cassandra, he compelled someone at the school” Stefan ranted making me roll my eyes. “She’ll be safe Stefan they’ll be us three and a witch” I tried to calm him. “And a vampire Hunter, I messaged Ric earlier” Damon spoke making me smile at Stefan. “See”

I flicked my eyes over to the door as Ric walked in. “There you are. I need you to put me and Cass here as a chaperone at the dance tonight. Klaus made his first move” Damon told him before anyone could even say anything. I looked over at Ric as he seemed different, I couldn’t point my finger on what it was though.

“Okay, so we find him and then what? Hmm? What’s our plan?” Elena questioned making me roll my eyes. “You as bait and Bonnie as our witch” I shrugged making them all look at me. “He has no idea how much power I can channel. If you can find him, I can kill him” Bonnie explained making Ric chuckle at himself. “That’s not gonna be that easy. I mean he is the biggest baddest vampire around” I raised my eyebrows at his behaviour because there’s something not right with the Hunter. “Alaric had a point, I mean, what if he-“ Damon started before rushing over to the witch who held her hand out and sent him flying making me look at the witch impressed.

“Well, I was impressed” I looked over at Stefan who looked quite happy that his brother got thrown by a witch. “It doesn’t matter if he’s an original, I can take down anyone who comes at me. I can kill him Elena” Bonnie explained before looking at the doppelgänger who looked like she was happy with the news.

The plan was set we all go to the dance and Bonnie kills Klaus, but I had a funny feeling something would go wrong, plans always go wrong in Mystic Falls. I dressed in some of my normal clothes because I wasn’t wearing anything from the 60’s, that’s an era I’d like to try and forget with all the hippies.

“So how do I look?” I asked as I walked towards Damon. “Did you not wanna dress in the 60’s either?” I chuckled at his question making him smile at me. “Come on lovebirds” I called as me and Damon walked out the door with a hippie Elena and Stefan walked behind us dressed in a suit.

Me and Damon walked towards the school and I couldn’t help but listen to Bonnie and Jeremys conversation as they stood outside, and as I listened in me and Damon couldn’t help but share a look, Bonnie was willing to get herself killed to kill Klaus.

As we walked into the dance a student got up on stage thanking everyone for being there before going on about a special dedication for Elena from Klaus before a song started playing making me raise an eyebrow. “Is that the best he can do? Isn’t he supposed to be the baddest vampire around?” I questioned making them all look at me. “I know everyone here” Elena spoke as she looked around the dance. “Maybe he’s not here, he just wants us to believe that he is” Stefan spoke making me look at him. “Stefan he’s here he wouldn’t miss this” I explained ad Damon wrapped his arm around my shoulder. “It’s a party people, blend. Let him come to us” Damon told them before leading me towards Ric.

Damon stood next to him with his arm still wrapped around my shoulder while he spoke to his friend while I kept my eyes open because I knew Klaus was here the question was where. I looked over at Ric because I was still getting the vibe that there was something going on with him, I just didn’t know if it had to do with Jenna finding out about Isobel was alive or not.

Me and Damon had a walk around the dance to see if we could figure anything out, but nothing at all made us think of Klaus. So keeping my guard up me and Damon decided to have a dance. “So you gonna tell me yet what you had to think about?” I questioned him making him roll his eyes. “Nope” I sighed shaking my head.

Stefan went to explain the situation to Caroline so Elena was left to dance with me and Damon which was weird if you ask me, but then Damon gave me a look before going to steal Bonnie from Jeremy leaving me with the doppelgänger.

“How are you?” I questioned her as we carried on dancing but none of that stupid couple dancing. “Freaking out a bit. You?” She questioned making me chuckle. “I’m over 900 Elena, I’m perfect” she nodded looking around the room. “Elena, I promise you you’re safe. You have three vampires protecting you. Nothing is going to happen” I tried to ease her seen as though she looked like she was gonna have a panic attack or something.

Once Stef claimed his girlfriend back I decided to walk around because I had nothing else to do, but I couldn’t help but notice Damon and Stefan having an intense conversation and Elena and Bonnie having one themselves.

“Please tell me you didn’t know that Bonnie was on a suicide mission” Stefan spoke as he got in Damon’s face. “Oh great, Jeremy told you and of course you told Elena” Damon rolled his eyes at his little brother. “Yeah I told her, you promised her no more secrets”

Shaking my head I pushed them away from each other, it’s not absolute and Damon’s just trying to do what he can to save your girlfriend who always seems to be on a suicide mission every corner we turn” I spoke looking at Stefan who didn’t look like he enjoyed or appreciated my input. “What she said” Damon spoke from behind me making me roll my eyes.

“Honestly Stefan we can’t stop a witch from doing what she wants, have you seen how much power Bonnie has right now? She’ll be fine” I spoke as I started to get an idea in my head. “Bonnie won’t die tonight” I told him just before we noticed Elena and Bonnie had disappeared.

The three of us started looking around the corridors before we heard a commotion making us quickly run only to come across Jeremy get attacked by a bunch of humans. “Oi” I shouted making them look over at us only to fire a crossbow at me that went into my arm. “s**t aim. But let me guess Klaus wanted to say Hi” I spoke as I pulled the wooden stick out of my arm, thankfully it didn’t bother me after been alive all these years.

I looked at the rest of the humans who pulled out weapons making the three of us share a look. We all went for one each and as I went to kill the human in my hands Stefan stopped me. “Don’t kill him. He’s been compelled. This whole things a distraction. You two go find Bonnie and Elena. I got this” I pulled away knowing he was right before I slammed the human into the lockers knocking him out.

I ran down the corridor with Damon listening out for Elena, only to bump into the two who looked freaked out. “What happened?” Damon questioned looking at them both. “Klaus is in Alaric’s body” Elena explained trying to get her breath back. “What?” I questioned but I should’ve known, that’s why he’s been acting strange. “He’s possessing it or something” Bonnie explained making me look at Elena. “Go find Stefan” I told her before she ran off.

Once she was away I looked over at Bonnie. “I have a plan so he thinks he’s got the upper hand” I told her making her and Damon look at me confused. “I promised you wouldn’t die tonight so this is me keeping my promise. So you willing to do whatever you need to kill him?” I asked the witch making her nod at me.

“You need to use your power and fake your death, you know make it believable with no heartbeat and that” She looked at me nodding making me smile. “I won’t let you die tonight Bonnie” I told her before she walked away determined to get the upper hand once again.

Me and Damon stayed where we was to wait for Stefan and Elena because we knew they’d come to join us and we wasn’t wrong. “Where’s Bonnie?” Elena questioned making me look over at her. “She’s doing what she needs to” I shrugged but of course they tried to argue with me. “Stefan let her do this” Damon told his brother but of course that wasn’t going to calm them both.

They both ran off towards where Bonnie was going through with the plan so me and Damon slowly followed them, Bonnie locked them out so they couldn’t interfere, but as soon as the magic stopped the doors opened allowing them in and Elena freaked out about there been no pulse and as I looked around the room I noticed Klaus had left after thinking that the witch was dead, meaning our plan worked.

“Stefan get Elena out of here, Damon go with them. I’ll deal with the body” I spoke from the door making them look at me, I wasn’t bothered about playing the bad guy because to Stefan I’ve been that for years and I knew Damon didn’t wanna ruin his relationship with his brother anymore than it already was.

“What do you mean deal with it?” Elena cried looking up at me. “Nobody can know about this, last thing we need is another mysterious death” I spoke as I walked over to Bonnies limp body. “This is Bonnie” Elena cried making me look at Stef and Dame. “Get her home, now” Thankfully they listened to me and got her out but not before she freaked out about Jeremy which I promised I’d find him, because I knew he needed to see for himself that Bonnie was alright, the poor kids lost too much already.

As I put her body in the car Damon had left me Jeremy came running over to me. “Cassandra, I can’t find anyone. Where’s Elena and Bonnie?” He questioned as he stood in front of me. “Come on kid get in the car we need to have a talk” I told him and thankfully he listened and got in the car.

I drove us to the old witches house explaining everything that happened tonight to Jeremy, he was upset that Elena thought Bonnie was dead but was thankful she wasn’t actually dead. He decided to stay with Bonnie at the house making me nod not wanting to argue with him in it.

Once Bonnie was settled and back alive I left them to it knowing I’d have to deal with Stefan and Elena unless Damon had explained it all to them, but going by the reaction I got as I walked back into the house I guess not seen as though Elena stormed over to me demanding answers. “What did you do with her?” Elena demanded making me sigh and glare at Damon, how could he not tell her my plan?! “Can you please calm her down?” I looked over at Stefan who glared at me making me sigh of course I was the bad guy, when in fact I’ve just saved Bonnies life.

“Don’t talk like I’m not standing right in front of you” Elena cried holding her hand out to stop Stefan getting any closer to her. “Please calm down” I spoke as I walked to stand in front of her. “You knew didn’t you. You knew that if she harnessed all that power she would die, didn’t you?” She cried making me roll my eyes. “Of course I knew Elena, I don’t get to be my age without-“ She cut me off by slapping me around the face making me slowly turn my head back towards her, noticing Stefan looked on edge and Damon looked shocked. “You didn’t tell her?” I gritted as I looked at my best friend.

“You need to listen to me and prepare yourself for what I’m going to say little girl. Bonnie had to die, we didn’t even think that Klaus would use Alaric’s body and she wasn’t prepared for that, and he wasn’t going to stop, and we weren’t gonna be able to stop him until he knew she was dead. He had to believe that Bonnie was dead, that we didn’t had a with that was strong enough to kill him, and your reaction made it even more believable” I explained as I looked at Stefan and Elena seen as though Damon knew the plan.

“She cast a spell” Damon spoke up making us look over at him. “Bonnies okay. You’re welcome” I spoke up making them look at me shocked before I walked towards the basement to go get myself a blood bag but was stopped by Stefan who had followed me.

“You could’ve told me” I stopped in my tracks to turn around and face him. “What for you to go tell your girlfriend? We had to make it believable, and of course your hatred towards me thinking I’m the bad guy also made it believable” I told him going to turn back around but he once again stopped me. “You understand what you put her through?” I sighed making me chuckle. “I was asked to come and help save her life Stefan, not worry about a teenagers feelings. I don’t mind being the bad guy if that’s what you actually think of me, but you know your welcome” I told him before walking away.

I knew Elena was upset thinking that one of her best friends was dead but her grief was what sold it, now we still had the upper hand over Klaus, we still had our secret weapon.

After my blood bag and shower and a fresh pair of clothes on I walked into Damon’s bedroom noticing Elena stood there making me sigh, if she was here to slap me again I’d rather not because I’d hate to retaliate.

“Here you go” Damon spoke handing me a glass of whiskey. “Cheers” I smiled at him before looking at Elena raising my eyebrows. “I’m sorry for hitting you Cassandra” Elena started making me roll my eyes. “Apology accepted, but let me be clear about something though Elena, I promised Damon that I’d help save YOUR life not Bonnies. Your my best friends, brothers girlfriend. You didn’t need to be pulled into all this supernatural drama but you did. So I’m here to protect YOU, if I can save a few others along the way I will” Once I finished she stared at me shocked before nodding and walking out.

“Well cheers to an excellent plan from my sexy friend” Damon spoke raising his glass as I downed my drink. “I’m full of amazing plans”
