I know I shouldn’t read further. I tell myself that clearly, twice, and my hand turns the page anyway.
The lamp on his desk throws a narrow circle of light across the paperwork, the rest of the office sunk into shadow around me. My own breathing sounds too loud in the empty room, the building settling somewhere overhead with a distant creak.
The language is dense, the kind of legal phrasing I’ve read a hundred times over the past few weeks coordinating the merger paperwork, but something about this particular section catches and holds, refusing to let me look away.
