The following morning, Sterling Group Headquarters was surrounded by reporters from different media houses. Camera flashes lit up the entrance while journalists stood behind the security barricades, eager to witness the announcement of the company's next CEO. News of Alison Sterling's death had spread across the country overnight, and everyone wanted to know who would inherit one of the largest business empires in the world. Television crews were already broadcasting live, and every passing minute only added to the growing tension outside the building.
Inside the headquarters, the atmosphere was no different. The boardroom on the top floor had been prepared for the reading of Alison Sterling's final will. A long, polished conference table occupied the center of the room, surrounded by high-backed leather chairs. Floor-to-ceiling windows overlooked the city skyline, while framed photographs celebrating the company's greatest achievements decorated the walls. Members of the board, senior executives, shareholders, family members, and legal advisers had all taken their seats. Although quiet conversations drifted through the room, everyone seemed to be thinking about the same thing. In their minds, there was only one possible successor.
Mason Sterling.
Mason sat calmly beside Evelyn Sterling, his posture as straight as ever. His face remained unreadable despite everything that had happened over the last twenty-four hours. He neither spoke nor reacted to the whispers around him, but his silence drew almost as much attention as the empty chair reserved for his younger brother.
A few moments later, the conference room door opened.
Every conversation came to an abrupt end as Cole Sterling walked inside. Without saying a word, he made his way toward the seat Richard Hill had prepared for him. Curious eyes followed him across the room, and quiet whispers spread almost immediately. Some directors looked surprised to see him, while others questioned why he had even come after staying away from both the family and the company for seven years.
Before anyone could speak to him, Richard Hill entered the room carrying the same leather folder he had held at the funeral. He walked to the front of the table, waited for complete silence, then adjusted his glasses before looking around the room.
"Thank you all for coming," he began. "We are gathered here today to honor the final wishes of Mr. Alison Sterling."
He carefully broke the official seal, unfolded the document, and began reading.
Richard first thanked Alison's family, business partners, employees, and board members for helping him build Sterling Group into one of the most successful companies in the country. His words reflected gratitude, wisdom, and the hope that the company would continue to grow long after his passing. The room remained silent as everyone listened, patiently waiting for the one announcement they believed they already knew.
Richard eventually reached the final page. He paused briefly before lifting his eyes from the document.
"According to the final will of Mr. Alison Sterling, I hereby appoint my son, Cole Sterling, as the next Chief Executive Officer of Sterling Group, effective immediately."
For a moment, nobody reacted.
The silence inside the boardroom felt almost unnatural, as though every person present needed a few seconds to understand what they had just heard. Then everything changed at once.
"What?"
"That's impossible!"
"There has to be a mistake."
Several directors rose from their seats while others demanded that Richard read the document again. One elderly shareholder slammed his palm onto the table, his face turning red with disbelief.
"Mason has spent fifteen years preparing for this position. How can you suddenly hand the company to someone who walked away from it?"
Another director turned toward Cole and shook his head.
"He disappeared for seven years. He knows nothing about running this company."
Arguments quickly filled the room. Some questioned whether the will was genuine, while others insisted that Alison must have changed his mind before his death. The once orderly meeting dissolved into confusion as several people tried to speak at the same time.
Through it all, Mason remained seated.
He did not interrupt anyone, nor did he attempt to defend himself. He simply listened, his expression giving away nothing.
Cole slowly rose from his chair and looked around the room before speaking.
"I can't accept this," he said with all seriousness.
His words immediately silenced the arguments.
He took a slow breath before continuing.
"I've been away from this company for seven years. Mason stayed here. He worked beside our father every single day. He understands this business far better than I do, and if anyone deserves to lead Sterling Group, it's him."
Several board members nodded in agreement.
Richard waited until the room became quiet again before reaching into his leather folder. This time, he removed a sealed envelope instead of another legal document.
"I expected you to refuse," he said calmly. "Your father expected it too."
Cole frowned as Richard held the envelope out to him.
"What is it?"
"A confidential letter written by your father. According to his instructions, only you are permitted to read it."
The room became silent once again.
Every eye followed the envelope as Cole accepted it. His fingers hesitated for a moment before he carefully broke the seal. Inside was a neatly folded letter written in Alison Sterling's own handwriting.
Cole unfolded it slowly.
His eyes scanned quickly and rested on the first sentence.
If you are reading this, it means I am no longer alive...
Before he could continue reading, a deafening crash echoed through the boardroom. The conference room doors burst open with such force that they slammed against the walls. Several people jumped from their seats as thick smoke rolled into the room, making it difficult to see.
"Security!" someone shouted.
Panic spread almost instantly. Chairs scraped across the polished floor as people rushed for cover. Security officers ran toward the entrance while others surrounded Cole.
Then, out of the smoke, a masked figure appeared.
The intruder moved with frightening speed, heading straight for Cole without slowing down. Before anyone could stop him, he snatched the letter from Cole's hands and turned toward the exit.
"Stop him!" one of the guards yelled as security officers immediately gave chase.
The masked man disappeared into the smoke, leaving nothing behind except the torn envelope still clutched in Cole's hand.
Everybody remained silent as the alarms began ringing throughout the building. Richard stared toward the open doorway before lowering his eyes to the empty envelope.
His face turned pale.
"Whoever stole that letter," he said quietly, "already knows the truth about Alison Sterling."
