The next morning, Crystal woke earlier than usual. The sky outside was still painted in deep shades of blue and gray, while the first faint traces of dawn lingered far beyond the horizon. The island remained peaceful and quiet, wrapped in the soft whispers of waves and the distant cries of seabirds welcoming a new day.
Carefully, Crystal slipped out from beneath her blanket. She tiptoed across the wooden floor, making sure not to create even the slightest creak that might wake her parents. Her long dark curls bounced gently behind her as she quietly made her way toward the living area where Gabriel had spent the night.
The handsome young man was lying on the couch, one arm hanging lazily by his side while the other rested over his chest. The dim glow of the oil lamp illuminated the sharp lines of his face—the thick brows, soft brown eyes hidden beneath closed lids, and the calm expression that somehow made him look younger and gentler in his sleep.
Crystal smiled unconsciously.
For a moment, she simply stood there staring at him.
Then slowly, she bent down and gently tapped his arm.
“Good morning, sleepyhead,” she whispered softly, trying not to laugh as Gabriel groaned quietly from his sleep.
His brows twitched before his eyes slowly fluttered open. It took him a second to adjust his blurry vision, but the moment he recognized the beautiful girl in front of him, a smile immediately appeared on his lips.
“Good morning, baby,” he murmured in his deep, sleepy voice. “Happy birthday.”
Crystal instantly felt warmth rush across her cheeks. Her heart fluttered wildly at the endearment.
“Th-thank you,” she replied shyly, cupping her warm cheeks as if trying to hide her embarrassment.
Gabriel pushed himself upright, stretching slightly before rubbing his eyes.
“Why are you awake so early?” he asked, still sounding groggy.
Crystal looked down at her fingers, suddenly feeling nervous.
“I just thought…” she started softly, “maybe we could walk along the shore while waiting for the sunrise.”
Gabriel blinked at her.
“What do you mean?” he asked in confusion.
But instead of answering, Crystal simply turned around and hurried outside the cabin.
“Crystal—wait!” Gabriel called, quickly slipping on his shoes before chasing after her.
The cool morning air greeted them the moment they stepped outside. The sea breeze carried the salty scent of the ocean while tiny waves gently kissed the shore. Above them, the stars slowly faded as dawn prepared to take over the sky.
Crystal continued walking quickly toward the beach, her white dress swaying with every step.
Gabriel finally caught up to her after only a few long strides. He reached for her hand and gently held it.
“Crystal,” he breathed.
She slowly turned to him.
“Yes, Gabe?”
The way she said his name nearly made his chest tighten.
“How could you make me feel this way?” she suddenly whispered.
Gabriel frowned slightly. “What do you mean?”
Crystal hesitated before carefully taking his hand and placing it over her chest.
Gabriel’s breath caught instantly.
Under his palm, he could feel the wild pounding of her heartbeat.
And because of the thin fabric of her dress, he could also feel the warmth of her skin beneath it. Heat rushed through Gabriel’s entire body. His jaw tightened as he quickly tried to control his thoughts.
“Do you feel it?” Crystal asked innocently, her silver-blue eyes filled with confusion. “Every time you’re near me, my heart beats so fast. There’s this strange feeling inside me that I couldn't stop.”
Her voice trembled softly.
“I don’t understand why this keeps happening.”
Gabriel swallowed hard before gently removing his hand from her chest. Instead, he brought it up to cup her cheek tenderly.
“Don’t you like it?” he asked quietly, his voice lower now.
Crystal looked up at him helplessly.
“Gabe…” she whispered.
His thumb slowly brushed against her soft skin while his fingers lightly grazed the back of her neck.
Crystal suddenly gasped softly. A strange shiver traveled down her spine.
Her knees weakened slightly as she instinctively grabbed the front of Gabriel’s shirt for support, leaning against his chest.
Gabriel closed his eyes briefly, trying to steady himself from how dangerously close they were.
“You make me feel the same way,” he admitted softly near her ear. “Since the first moment I saw you.”
Crystal’s breathing became uneven.
“And I like it,” Gabriel continued honestly. “So why don’t you?”
Crystal slowly lifted her gaze toward him.
“I do,” she confessed shyly. “I think… I’m starting to like it too.”
A smile slowly appeared on Gabriel’s lips.
But instead of taking advantage of her innocence, he simply leaned down and pressed a soft kiss against her forehead.
The gesture made Crystal’s heart melt even more.
“We’ll figure everything out someday,” he whispered gently. “But for now, let’s just enjoy this moment.”
Crystal nodded softly.
Gabriel intertwined his fingers with hers as they continued walking hand in hand toward the shoreline.
The ocean glimmered beautifully beneath the growing light of dawn.
“Gabriel,” Crystal suddenly said excitedly, stepping into the water. “Let’s swim!”
Gabriel laughed softly before removing his shoes. He hesitated for a moment about taking off his shirt until Crystal suddenly grinned at him.
“Take it off, Gabe!”
Gabriel chuckled helplessly.
“Well, since the birthday girl commanded me to.”
He pulled his shirt over his head, revealing his toned chest beneath the cool morning air.
Crystal immediately looked away, her cheeks turning pink again.
Farther away near the yacht, Christian and Aya quietly watched the two from a distance. Aya smiled softly while leaning against her husband’s shoulder.
“She looks so happy,” she whispered.
Christian nodded quietly.
For the first time in years, their daughter looked truly alive.
Back near the shore, Gabriel and Crystal swam together beneath the golden sunrise. The seawater sparkled around them while the early sunlight reflected beautifully against Crystal’s damp curls.
Gabriel tried his best not to stare too much at her soaked dress clinging delicately against her figure, but it became nearly impossible.
Especially when Crystal suddenly swam closer and wrapped her arms around his neck. Their bodies touched beneath the water.
Gabriel nearly lost his breath.
“Crystal…” he groaned softly.
“Yes?” she whispered innocently.
“Are you trying to kill me?”
Crystal blinked in confusion before laughing softly.
Gabriel’s hands instinctively settled against her waist, pulling her slightly closer. But suddenly Crystal winced sharply in pain.
“Crystal?” Gabriel asked immediately.
Without warning, she pushed away from him and dove beneath the water.
Gabriel followed instantly. And once again, he witnessed the impossible.
Beneath the shimmering ocean, Crystal’s legs slowly fused together while green scales spread beautifully across her skin. Her transformation looked almost magical beneath the sunlight filtering through the water. Her long tail shimmered elegantly as it formed completely.
Gabriel stared at her in complete awe.
When they resurfaced moments later, Crystal looked nervous.
“Are you scared of me now?” she asked quietly.
Gabriel immediately shook his head.
“Scared?” he repeated. “Crystal… you’re beautiful.”
The sincerity in his voice made her smile again.
“You want to touch it?” she asked shyly.
“Can I?”
Crystal turned slightly and flipped her tail gently through the water.
Gabriel carefully brushed his fingers against the shimmering scales. Warm and smooth.
His eyes widened with fascination.
“You’re incredible,” he whispered.
Crystal laughed softly.
But Gabriel’s smile faded slightly when he noticed the healing cuts along her tail from the fishing net.
“This happened yesterday,” he murmured sadly.
Crystal nodded.
“The saltwater will heal it.”
Gabriel looked at her quietly for a moment before sighing softly.
“You’ve suffered so much.”
Crystal only smiled gently.
As the morning continued, Christian eventually sailed the yacht while Gabriel sat at the back platform beside Crystal, who swam gracefully alongside them.
Aya soon joined Gabriel near the edge of the yacht.
“You still can’t believe we exist, can you?” she teased lightly.
Gabriel laughed quietly.
“I feel like I’m living inside a fairy tale.”
Aya smiled knowingly before speaking more seriously.
“Gabriel… please protect our secret.”
He looked at her sincerely.
“You have my word, Miss Aya.”
Aya nodded thankfully.
The rest of the day passed beautifully.
Christian lent Gabriel diving gear so he could explore the ocean depths with Crystal. Together they swam through dazzling coral reefs bursting with color and life. Schools of fish surrounded them while beams of sunlight danced through the water above.
Crystal moved through the ocean like she belonged to it completely. Graceful, elegant and free.
Gabriel could barely take his eyes off her.
She looked less like a cursed creature and more like a goddess born from the sea itself.
By sunset, Gabriel helped Crystal climb back onto the yacht platform and wrapped her gently in a towel before her painful transformation began again.
This time, he witnessed everything up close.
Her body trembled as the tail slowly split painfully back into human legs.
Crystal bit her lip to stop herself from crying out.
Gabriel’s chest ached watching her suffer.
“I don’t know how you endure this every day,” he whispered sadly.
Crystal managed a weak smile.
“I don’t really have a choice.”
Carefully, Gabriel carried her bridal-style into the yacht cabin and gently lowered her into the warm bathtub.
He brushed damp strands of hair away from her face before kissing her forehead tenderly.
“You’re stronger than anyone I know.”
Outside, Christian and Aya quietly watched through the cabin doorway.
“The problem is,” Christian murmured softly, “Gabriel will eventually have to leave.”
Aya rested her head against his shoulder.
“But maybe,” she whispered hopefully, “the Spirits brought him here for a reason.”
That evening, they all shared dinner together while laughter filled the cozy yacht cabin.
“This is the best birthday I’ve ever had,” Crystal announced brightly.
Christian chuckled dramatically.
“So Gabriel is your new favorite swimming partner now?”
Crystal grinned mischievously.
“Well… maybe.”
Gabriel nearly choked on his food while Aya burst into laughter.
The warm sound of happiness echoed gently throughout the cabin while outside, the ocean waves continued their endless song beneath the glowing moonlit sky.
