Ava's POV The journey to Blood Haven was quiet. Too quiet. The black-tinted SUV barely made a sound, and neither did the guards who sat in the front. I sat in the back seat, hands pressed tightly in my lap, my heart pounding the entire time. The car felt more like a coffin than a ride to safety. I didn’t know where they were taking me, and I didn’t even know what day it was anymore. I had stopped counting after they locked me in that underground hellhole, where they poked and branded us like we were nothing more than cattle. I braced myself, whatever Blood Haven was, I expected more of the same, more pain, more chains, more cruel hands on my skin. But when the car finally pulled to a stop in front of a massive black iron gate, something changed. Not around me, inside me, fear turned to dread. This was it, I was in the monster’s territory now. Two guards stepped out and opened my door. I didn’t move at first, it was frozen like a mouse in front of a snake. But they didn’t yank me, they didn’t shout or curse. “Come,” one said, his voice even. I followed. Blood Haven was nothing like I had imagined. The name made me think of a fortress soaked in blood. But what I saw was... beautiful. Cold, yes, grand, yes. But beautiful, high stone walls covered in ivy, wide steps leading to a mansion with dark glass windows that reflected the early evening sun. Clean, quiet, organized. We walked through towering wooden doors into a huge hallway, where marble floors stretched on and golden lights glowed from the walls. No shouting, no chains clinking, just silence. I looked around, expecting him, Kael. The man who had bought me like a piece of meat. The feared Alpha. The one they called the Monster of Blood Haven. But he wasn’t there. Instead, more guards came, not rough men with dirty eyes. These ones were dressed in black and silver, heads bowed slightly as they stood at the ready. “Miss,” one of them said. “This way.” Again, I followed. Every step I took down the hallway made my stomach twist tighter. My fingers shook at my sides, any moment now, I thought, any moment, he will come out. He will grab me, he will drag me to some dark dungeon. But he didn’t. They took me upstairs, down a quiet corridor, and stopped in front of a large wooden door. The guard opened it gently and stepped aside. “Your room.” My… room? I blinked. I walked in slowly, expecting the door to slam behind me and lock. It didn’t, the room was... warm. It had a huge bed with soft white sheets, and the pillows fluffed perfectly. A fireplace quietly crackled on one side. There was a clean bathroom, a closet full of clothes, real clothes, not the rags I had worn in the cages. A tray of food sat on a table. Fresh fruit, roasted chicken, bread, and a glass of what looked like juice. I stared at it like it was poison. No one said a word, no one forced me. The guards simply nodded and closed the door behind me, with no key turning. I stood still in the middle of the room, afraid to move, afraid to breathe. I wasn’t chained, I wasn’t locked in. There were no beatings, no orders. Just... space. It felt wrong, it felt like a trick. I didn’t touch the food. My stomach growled, but I ignored it. I walked to the closet and touched a soft cotton dress with trembling fingers. Everything was clean, neat, and safe, but I didn’t feel safe. I curled up on the edge of the bed, my knees tucked into my chest, I stared at the door for what felt like hours. Every sound outside made me flinch. A footstep in the hall, a door closing somewhere. Breeze brushing against the window. He still hadn’t come, Why? Why buy me just to ignore me? I couldn’t understand it, it made no sense, every other man in that auction looked at me like I was a toy to play with. But Kael... Kael hadn’t even looked at me properly when he bought me. Just one cold, unreadable glance. Then he walked out. And now, this? I reached out and grabbed the glass of juice, and I sniffed it. It didn’t smell poisoned. I took a small sip, my throat, dry and raw, welcomed the liquid. I drank half before stopping, guilt washing over me. Why did I feel guilty for drinking? Because I didn’t earn it, because kindness always came with a price. Because nothing made sense anymore. I wandered to the mirror in the corner and stared at myself. My reflection looked like a ghost, with very pale skin. Bruises fading across my arms, hair dull and tangled, eyes wide, empty, haunted. I didn’t know this girl, I didn’t know who I was anymore. Not a daughter, not a mate, not even a person. Just a thing that had been sold and bought. But this room... this strange peace... It confused me. Was he waiting for me to let my guard down? Was this the calm before the storm? Eventually, the exhaustion won. I slipped into the bathroom, cleaned myself the best I could, changed into one of the soft nightgowns from the closet, and crawled into bed. The sheets were too soft. The mattress is too warm. Everything felt... unreal. Still, I didn’t sleep. I lay there, staring at the ceiling, waiting for the monster to come. Hours passed, nothing, then I noticed it.A piece of paper, folded neatly on the nightstand beside the bed. I sat up slowly, my hands shaking as I reached for it. There was no seal, no letterhead. Just simple black ink, written in bold, slanted handwriting. Rest. You’re safe now-K.
