Episode 16: The Awakening

The village of Durgavan was slowly returning to normal. The air no longer carried the bitter chill that had lingered during the Rakshaan’s reign. Children played in the fields once again, and families lit oil lamps outside their homes — a symbol of warding off evil. But Viren knew better than to believe the nightmare was truly over. He stood alone at the edge of Kaali Van, staring into the twisted trees. The cursed mark on his palm had faded to a faint scar, yet it still pulsed faintly — a reminder that the Rakshaan’s presence wasn’t entirely gone. “You’ve been out here every day,” Reva said, approaching from behind. “I can still feel it,” Viren muttered. “Like... something’s watching me.” Reva placed a comforting hand on his arm. “The Rakshaan is gone. You defeated it.” “Did I?” Viren asked grimly. “Or did I just weaken it?” --- A Whisper in the Dark That night, Viren’s sleep was restless. The whispers returned — faint yet undeniable. "You bled... but your blood is still mine..." Viren jolted awake, heart pounding. His scar was throbbing again — a dull ache that seemed to burn beneath his skin. As he stumbled to the washbasin to splash cold water on his face, he noticed something that made his breath catch. The veins near his scar were turning dark again — thin black lines creeping up his wrist. “No...” Viren whispered. A gust of wind burst through his window, and with it came a faint laugh — a voice like brittle leaves scraping against stone. "The curse cannot be buried... it only spreads..." --- A Darker Secret By morning, Viren had made his decision. “I have to return to the temple,” he told Reva. “There’s something we missed — something the Rakshaan left behind.” “You can’t go alone,” Reva insisted. “I won’t,” Viren said. “We need Dattu Kaka.” --- Dattu Kaka’s face turned pale when Viren showed him the dark veins creeping across his arm. “I was afraid of this,” Dattu Kaka muttered. “The Rakshaan’s curse isn’t just about you. It’s... spreading.” “What do you mean?” Viren demanded. Dattu Kaka took a deep breath. “Bhavsar Patil’s betrayal cursed his entire bloodline — but over time, that blood mixed with others in Durgavan. The curse doesn’t stop with you, Viren. It’s still searching for new hosts — descendants with traces of Bhavsar’s blood.” “Then… others are in danger?” Viren asked. “Yes,” Dattu Kaka said gravely. “And if the Rakshaan isn’t truly gone... it will find them.” --- Return to the Temple The trio returned to the ruined temple that afternoon. The stone altar where Viren had bled was now blackened — charred as if from fire. The air inside the ruins felt... wrong. “It’s colder,” Reva murmured. “Something’s still here,” Dattu Kaka warned. The faded carvings on the walls seemed to writhe in the shadows — demonic faces flickering with distorted grins. Then Viren saw it — a stone idol resting near the altar. It was small, barely the size of his palm, yet carved with unsettling precision. The figure had Bhavsar Patil’s twisted face... but its eyes were hollow, filled with dark ash. “The Rakshaan’s presence lingers here,” Dattu Kaka whispered. “This idol... it’s an anchor — a vessel holding its power.” “What do we do with it?” Reva asked. “Destroy it,” Viren said firmly. But before anyone could react, the air turned ice cold. The shadows thickened, coiling like smoke — and from within them, a figure emerged. A twisted face, half-bone, half-rotting flesh — Bhavsar Patil’s tormented form. “You cannot destroy what is already inside you, boy...” Bhavsar’s voice rasped. The idol shook violently, and the mark on Viren’s arm blazed with searing heat. “Viren, step back!” Dattu Kaka yelled. But Viren couldn’t move. His muscles stiffened, and his mind clouded with an unnatural fog. "You are my vessel now," Bhavsar’s voice whispered in his mind. "Through you... I will return." The twisted face lunged — and the world turned to darkness. --- The Other Side Viren found himself standing in a twisted reflection of Durgavan — the village distorted and shrouded in shadow. The air was heavy, and strange figures moved in the distance — villagers with hollow eyes and gaping mouths. “You’re in my world now,” Bhavsar’s voice echoed. Viren spun around to see the twisted spirit of Bhavsar standing before him. His skeletal grin stretched wider than any human smile could. “You may have delayed my rise,” Bhavsar sneered, “but the curse cannot be undone. It’s in your blood now.” Viren gritted his teeth. “I won’t let you control me.” “You don’t have a choice,” Bhavsar laughed. “Soon, you’ll be just like me — a slave to the Rakshaan’s will. And your precious village...” Bhavsar’s grin widened. “...will burn.” --- The Battle for His Soul In the real world, Dattu Kaka and Reva stood helpless as Viren convulsed on the temple floor, his body twitching violently. “He’s fighting it,” Dattu Kaka said urgently. “We need to destroy the idol before it traps him!” “Can’t we just smash it?” Reva asked. Dattu Kaka shook his head. “It’s bound to his blood now — the curse will resist.” He grabbed Viren’s dagger from his belt, whispering a sacred chant. “This blade has tasted Viren’s blood before — it’s our only chance.” As Viren’s breathing turned shallow, Dattu Kaka raised the blade and drove it deep into the idol’s chest. --- Breaking the Chains In the shadow world, Viren felt something pierce through the fog clouding his mind. The twisted image of Bhavsar faltered — his skeletal face twisting in pain. “No!” Bhavsar howled as his form began to crack like shattered glass. “This is my blood... my life... and I choose to fight!” Viren roared. With a final surge of strength, he grasped the fading spirit’s face and ripped it apart, the darkness dissolving into fading embers. --- Awakening Viren’s eyes shot open. He was back in the ruined temple, his breathing ragged. The idol lay shattered beside him, its face now nothing more than ash and dust. “You’re back,” Reva whispered, relief washing over her face. Viren clutched his arm — the black veins had retreated, but the faint outline of the mark still lingered beneath his skin. “It’s not over,” Viren muttered, staring at his hand. “The bloodline curse still exists... and it’s only getting stronger.” --- To Be Continued...
