A week had went by, it was just Alex and I for the most part. Occasionally Ben would stop in to sleep and then head out again before I was even awake.
It was my birthday today and I was officially an adult. This was the day that I had been waiting for, I was going to start my life, now things are a little different, I am once again stuck. At least this is more by choice to protect Alex, or at least not to cause trouble for him.
I didn’t plan on tell anyone that it was my birthday, I didn’t want to celebrate, I just wanted to be able to have a life that was stable and simple.
I turned my phone on and started scrolling through job listings. As soon as I was allowed to get out of here, I would be gone. I also needed a new plan though.
Normally I was alone for most of the day, I heard the front door though and assumed it would be Alex. I was wrong. It was a man the same age as Alex and Ben. Tall, with hair that fell over his eyes. He also had tattoos going down his neck.
Unfortunately he saw me as soon as I walked into the room. He turned and stared at me. I just froze in my tracks.
“And you are?” He said with a threatening tone.
“Uh, I’m Jess, Alex’s sister,” I said, avoiding too much eye contact with him. “I am staying here with him for a bit.”
He nodded his head, and pulled out his phone. He didn’t even bother looking at me again. A couple of seconds later his phone vibrated and he looked at it. He looked back at me and put the phone back in his pocket.
“Ok Alex’s sister, how long are you going to be staying here for?” He said with disgust.
Evidently he wasn’t into having unwanted house guests.
“I’m not exactly sure, I wasn’t planning on staying here, but something happened and it was unavoidable,” I said to him.
“Just stay out of my way, and don’t get into my stuff,” he said and left the room. I could see him walking down the hall and then slam his door.
I really really hope that I don’t have to stay here too much longer. Hopefully Alex has some answers tonight when he gets home.
I went back to Alex’s room where I had been staying since I got here. He was nice enough to let me have his room and he took the couch. I was pretty much back to normal, waiting for a couple scratches and bruises to finish going away, but all in all I was able to take care of myself.
My phone buzzed. It was Alex. He was letting me know that Jake was going to be here today, one of the other roommates. Honestly that would have been nice to know before he showed up.
I texted him back letting him know that I had already met him. Alex told me to stick to the room and avoid him. That he had a temper. Also that he wouldn’t be back until tomorrow, so to order some takeout. He had left some money for me.
I ordered some Mexican food and waited for it to arrive. When it did Jake had beat me to the door and grabbed the food, he looked at me and asked if I had ordered it. I nodded my head and he tossed the bag to me.
“There’s plenty here if you wanted some,” I said to him.
He didn’t even bother acknowledging me and walked back to his room. He came out a few seconds later with his jacket on. He grabbed his keys and left. It looks like it was just back to being just me here. At least I could eat my food in peace.

It had been a busy week with all the loose ends to tie up. That loser was into a lot more than what we had at first thought. Owed a lot more than us money, and some of those people were enemies of our family.
My father wasn’t exactly the happiest about it either. He didn’t like people dying before he got information out of them. Then depending of what they did it was either quick and painless or slow and they wished for their end.
I sat in my office, a lighter in my hand. I kept flicking it on and off. I was tired of all the dirty work that constantly fell to me. I was the one that was called when there was no room for negotiation. Someone was going to be hurt, or dead.
I texted Derik to come in today. I wanted an update on Alex and his sister. I had already given them more leniency than I have ever granted anyone. Even though his father was a piece of trash, Alex has always proved to be loyal and that had value in itself.
I heard a knock on my door. I already knew that it was going to be Derik, because no one came here without being summoned. No one would have the guts to do it.
“Come in,” I told him.
Derik came in and sat down at my desk with me.
“Was there something that you needed done?” He asked.
“What’s the status of Alex and his sister? I’m assuming since there was no update, they haven’t tried ditching town or anything?” I questioned him.
“Alex has only been sent to do odd jobs here and there, nothing high up or anything. Other than that he has spent his time in his apartment. I haven’t seen or heard anything about his sister. Since the there hasn’t been a report on her, I’m going to say that she hasn’t even stepped outside” Derik said to me.
I nodded, “how long has it been?” I asked him.
“It’s been a little over a week now,” he said to me.
“I would say that it is time for them to pay the price of that night,” I said to him. “Go ahead and bring them in tonight.”
Derik nodded, I could tell that he didn’t like the job I gave him. He was fine if it were someone who deserved it. Whether friend or foe. If they crossed or betrayed he wouldn’t hesitate to do what needed to be done. But, he would never touch the innocent, he hated being involved with anything that involved people who weren’t involved in our world.
HIs mother and sister had been put on a hit list when he was a teenager. For nothing more than just being the wife and daughter of his father. They wanted to send him a message, to destroy him. When that happened, he was never the same again. He had ended it a month after it happened. As soon as he found the men who did it. He finished them and then himself.
Because of that, Derik would never touch someone who wasn’t directly involved. So he was extremely uncomfortable with dealing with this situation. Even though he knew I would never touch the girl, unless she did something to cross us. Still had to make it known that she was never to talk of that night, if she did, she would wish that she never made it out that night.
He left quickly after I had asked him to get them. I shouldn’t have to wait more than an hour at the most. We will see what kind of kids this man raised. See if they deserve the chance they were given.
