When we got back to my place I headed for my room. After dealing with lowlife scum I always felt like I needed to shower. I heard my phone going off a few times, but whatever it was, it could wait.
After showering I went downstairs to grab a drink. Josh was already in my office and it looked like he was already a few drinks ahead of me.
“Pour me a glass as well,” I told him.
He got up silently and poured me a glass. He brought it over and sat it on the table in front of me.
“How long do you think it is going to take for that trash to try and run?” I asked Josh. “I don’t even give him twenty-four hours until he tries to make a run for it.”
“This time you are wrong.” Josh said to me as he tipped his drink to me. “He won’t be running anywhere. You won’t be getting any money from him either. There was a probably after we had left. He pulled a gun on some girl. Derik said that he put him out of his misery.”
I raised my eyebrows at him. This was not what I was expecting. I wasn’t going to enjoy telling my father that he is out his money, but honestly the world was a better place without that sorry excuse of a man.
“You said a girl?” I asked. “Where did she come from. The house was empty when we left.”
“Derik didn’t share too many details. He said that she lived there and didn’t know what was going on. He didn’t have much else to say about her. Evidently she took a fall or something, she was unconscious, so there wasn’t much information to get out of her.” Josh told me.
“And what of Alex?” I questioned him.
“Derik didn’t say, he said that he wouldn’t be back tonight. He had to make arrangements to have the body removed and the house cleaned up.” Josh said to me.
I nodded my head and then got up to pour another drink. So far it wasn’t helping at all. I still felt a pounding headache and I was completely annoyed with how things turned out.
“When Derik gets back let him know I want to talk to him.” I told Josh. “I’m going to need a few more details if I’m going to tell my father how we went against his orders.”
I headed back to my room, it was already past midnight. I as going to get some sleep before I had to deal with all the trouble tomorrow.
The next morning I got up early. I put on some sweats and headed to my gym downstairs. It wasn’t just about blowing off steam, or staying in shape, it was about staying sharp. The moment you start relaxing, will probably be your last moment.
I had only been down there for twenty minutes when Derik walked in. He was still in the same clothes from yesterday, so he must not have had a chance to get some sleep.
“So, he’s dead?” I asked Derik without bothering to look at him.
“Yeah, he somehow got a hold of a gun.” Derik said simply.
I guess he wasn’t going to volunteering information today.
“You couldn’t have disarmed him?” I asked. I was curious why he wasn’t mentioning anything about Alex and the girl, who I assume to be his sister.
“There were some complications. When I got back there were already a couple of people in the house.” Said Derik simply.
I can’t punching the bag that I was working out on. I stopped for a second to look at him. Was he really not going to tell me the full story without my prodding him?
“Did you want to share with why they were there?” I asked him.
“It was Alex, he had his sister with him. Evidently he had brought her so that she could grab a few belongings and then head out.” Derik said to me.
“Where was she going to be going?” I asked him.
I don’t know who she is, but there is a likelihood that she knew where the money in the house was. That they are just waiting to get out of town with the money that they owe us.
“Why would he turn his gun on his own daughter? The whole thing was probably staged. Just to make us look somewhere else.” I said to him.
I had already been working out for an hour now, so I started to unwrap my hands. He tossed me a water bottle and I sat down to catch my breath.
“Are you sure they didn’t skip town?” I asked him. “After all, if that as what the father was like, it wouldn’t be surprising if that’s what kind of kids he had.
“No.. I.. he brought his sister home with him. Well to his apartment. I wasn’t fast enough and somehow he had smacked her down the stairs before I was able to finish him.” Derik told me.
“Where is he staying?” I asked Derik. He was always pretty good at tying up loose ends.
“A few blocks from here. Not the best side of town. But I guess given the circumstances, it was probably better than the life he had had living at his father’s home.” He said.
“Did you get everything else taken care of?” I asked him. I didn’t have to be specific. He knew I was taking about the mess after the shootout.
He nodded at me. I didn’t have to press more. Derik was good at what he did, and was meticulous. He still had a look on his face though. So I knew that he wasn’t to talk to me about something.
“What is it?” I asked him.
“It wasn’t pretty Val.. I’m used to the job. I’m used to having to take care of people, but I’ve never had an innocent person in the way before. There was so much blood running down her face. I don’t know what kind of man would hold his own daughter as a hostage.
“Are you sure it wasn’t just a show?” I asked him.
“No, you should have seen the fear in her eyes. Even Alex looked scared of his own father.
“Tell Alex to come here and to bring his sister with him,” I said.
“Val, that probably won’t be happening anytime soon,” said Derik.
“I really don’t care what excuse they can think off,” I want them both here this morning.
“She hit her head pretty hard Val,” he said to me. “Before he took her home, they had to go to the hospital for some stitches.”
I turned to look at him. I was rather annoyed. I was used to people saying ok. The fact that Derik wasn’t complying was super irritating.
“Where is Alex living now?” I asked him.
“He lives with a few of the other guys that work for us,” Derik said.
“Keep me updated on the situation, I don’t like someone who doesn’t work for us being so close to this many people who work for us. Tell Alex that I’ll be paying them a visit sometime soon. That he and his sister aren’t allowed to make a move without my permission.”
