Mateo’s POV.
I was waiting at the airport for my Beta and Gamma to pick me up. It was three in the afternoon and I was feeling so tired. I had jet lag from travelling around the world in the last two months. I turned eighteen three months ago and I couldn’t find my mate within my pack. So I went to several parks around the world to search for her.
The packs I shared an alliance with excepted me into their packs easily. Others took a lot of convincing since they thought I was there to spy on them. But they all gave me their trust in the end, and some of them even accepted an alliance in exchange. After two months of searching, I gave up and decided to try my search again during the summer break. School started a week ago and I had to get back to my classes and my pack.
Ever since my father died when I was sixteen, I had to take over the pack as Alpha. Even though I’m Alpha, I still have to finish my schooling, my mother makes me. Plus, I totally respect my mother, even though I am the Alpha. She is the only one that can tell me what to do. Plus, since I haven’t found my Luna, so technically my mother was still the Luna until then.
I try my best to maintain a balance between going to school and running my pack. It's hard but I manage. I have heaps of help and support from my friends and pack members. But I’m a werewolf and every werewolf needs a mate, especially an Alpha. I’ve heard stories of how dangerous a wolf can be without a mate. But an Alpha without a mate is more dangerous, or so I’m told. A lot of wolves find their mates at eighteen and a lot of Alphas do too.
“Alpha!” I heard my beta’s voice and looked in his direction.
He was walking towards me with my gamma and three of my warriors.
“Hey Sam, it’s good to see you,” I said as I gave him a hug.
Sam and Ryan are my best friends. We have been best friends since birth. I gave my warriors a hug. They have also been my friends since birth. We are all around the same age and grew up together. There were Will, Chris and James standing behind Sam and Ryan.
“So no luck finding her?” Ryan asked and I shook my head as I let out a sigh.
“I went to nine packs in the last nine weeks and found nothing. Either she is still underage or she could be in one of the other packs I haven’t visited. I have decided to try again for summer break” I said as the guys helped carry my bags and we headed towards the car.
“Alpha, even if she was underage, you would still be able to smell her scent. Well, that’s what my grandma told me. Remember? She was seventeen when my grandfather found her”, Ryan said to me.
“You know the rules, if they are seventeen then their mate can’t tell them until they find out for themselves,” Sam said.
That rule was made by the council so that someone older wouldn’t take advantage and lie to people that are underage. But what Ryan said just made me feel even more bad, even though it didn’t show any emotion. There were a few seventeen-year-olds that attended the party that each Alpha tried to throw at me. However, none of those girls were my mates. Even if they were, I would be allowed to tell her if she was seventeen.
Every single Alpha was hoping that my mate was in their pack. Most of them were hoping it was their own daughter too. Only because my pack is known to be the strongest and largest pack in the world. On top of that, we have been feared too, ever since my father and his father led the war against witches and warlocks. My grandfather said that a wizard had tried to kill his mate, my grandmother. Although my grandmother is still alive, she doesn’t really say much to anyone. Sam’s phone rang and it pulled me out of my thoughts.
He answered, “What’s up Sally?” he said to his twin sister. “Yeah, we are heading to the cafe to grab a bite. Will Nina come?” he said, and I gave him a questioning look as he said the name, Nina. Who was Nina? I thought to myself. Maybe she is Sally’s new girlfriend? I’ll have to ask him when he hangs up. “She said that? So she must be really hung over after last night”. He said as he laughed “Okay, we will meet you at the cafe.” he said as he hung up the call.
“So, who is Nina? Sally’s new girlfriend?” I asked Sam. “
No, no, she is new to town. Ryan invited her to join our group. You’ll meet her on Monday. She got too drunk last night, so she won't be coming to the café. Oh and she is human, so she doesn’t know about us”, Sam said with a broad smile.
“Okay. Why are you smiling like that?” I asked.
“Well, we kissed last night but I think she was too drunk to remember,” he said.
“You kissed Nina?!” Ryan said, or more like yelling.
“Yeah I did and for some reason I like her. Like I feel protective of her. I don’t know, I might ask her out on Monday”, Sam said.
“Well, if you're into humans now, date her. You're not eighteen for another two weeks. Who knows, she might be your mate! I mean you said you felt something towards her. Maybe it’s the mate bond? But you won't know until you're eighteen.” I said, feeling happy for my beta but jealous at the same time.
“You know what, I think I will ask her to be my girlfriend on Monday,” Sam said as he wore a huge smile. “Just don’t tell her about us, unless she ends up being your mate” I finished saying as we pulled up at the café and walked into our usual spot.
Sally and Logan were already there waiting for us. We all sat down and placed our usual order. Sam and Ryan told me the story of how they met Nina in the boy's toilet. I couldn’t help but laugh at the weird way they met her.
We then talked about how things had been going with the pack since I left. After almost an hour, we all left the café and headed back to the pack house. Pulling up to the pack house, my mother came running out. When she got to me, she gave me a big hug.
“I missed you, Mateo! Sorry, you haven’t found your mate son.” she said, as her big smile changed to a frown “I’m sure you will find her soon. The moon goddess has unexpected ways of making you cross paths with your mate. There are many stories of how wolves unexpectedly find their mates. Your father and I are one of those stories” she said as her smile returned from the memory.
“Yeah, I know mother. You told me you were a rogue and accidentally walked onto the packland. Then you were taken to the Alpha, who ended up being your mate” I said, sort of feeling annoyed because I had heard the story a thousand times.
But it also made me feel a bit jealous. Because it was only two weeks after my dad turned eighteen that he found his mate. For me, it's been two whole months and nothing at all. I grabbed my bag out of the trunk of the car and turned to walk into the front door of the packed house. I was not feeling well, I felt really tired or maybe I was just upset about not finding my mate. Plus, everyone feeling sorry for me about not finding my mate just made me feel worse.
I just wanted to rest and be alone, because I felt alone without my other half. Even though I never met her or didn’t know her, I wanted her.. here and now.
“Okay enough with all these apologies. No more talking about me not finding my mate. I’m going to unpack and have a rest, I still have jet lag” I said, with a bit of anger in my voice.
I was mad because I was so tired. But I was even madder that I hadn’t found my mate. Where is she? And when will the moon goddess allow me to meet my mate?
