Chapter 2: The Unforgettable Stranger

2188 Words
Lily Donovan sat at her kitchen table the next morning, staring at her laptop screen as the harsh morning sunlight poured through the large windows of her apartment. She should have been focused on the marketing report she was preparing, but her mind was elsewhere. Specifically, it was still stuck at the party from the night before. Ethan Carter. His name echoed in her head, along with the image of his smirking face and those impossibly blue eyes. She had heard the stories about him—the bad boy musician who had once dominated the indie rock scene, only to disappear from the public eye a couple of years ago. Nina had practically been vibrating with excitement when she realized who he was, but Lily hadn’t cared. At least, that’s what she kept telling herself. She didn’t have time to care about some washed-up rock star. Yet, here she was, thinking about him. Again. The conversation they’d shared had been… unexpected. He hadn’t been the arrogant jerk she’d assumed he would be. In fact, he had seemed almost normal, which was the last thing she’d expected from someone like him. Maybe it was his laid-back demeanor or the way he’d looked at her, as though he could see right through her polished exterior. Whatever it was, it unnerved her. Lily’s fingers hovered over her keyboard, itching to type out the report she needed to submit by noon. Her job at the prestigious marketing firm, Donovan & Rose, demanded precision and efficiency. But the more she tried to focus, the more her thoughts drifted back to Ethan. With a frustrated sigh, she pushed her laptop away and stood up, heading to the kitchen for a second cup of coffee. As she poured the dark liquid into her favorite mug, her phone buzzed on the counter, pulling her out of her reverie. It was Nina. “Morning, bestie!” the text read, followed by a dozen exclamation points and heart emojis. “Soooo… I saw the way Ethan was looking at you last night. Spill. What happened after I left???” Lily rolled her eyes and set the phone down without responding. Nina had a way of reading into things that weren’t there. Yes, Ethan had talked to her, but it wasn’t like anything significant had happened. She wasn’t about to entertain Nina’s fantasies of her getting involved with some troubled rock star. Still, as Lily sipped her coffee and leaned against the counter, she couldn’t help but replay the moment when Ethan had approached her. His casual confidence, the way he had seen right through her facade of indifference—it had stirred something inside her that she wasn’t entirely comfortable with. Shaking her head, Lily pushed the thoughts aside and forced herself back to the table. She couldn’t afford distractions, not with this project looming over her. The client was a big deal, and the campaign could catapult her career to the next level. That was what she needed to focus on. Not some fleeting moment with a stranger. Still, no matter how hard she tried to push it away, the memory of Ethan lingered. By the time Lily finally submitted her report later that afternoon, she felt mentally drained. The day had dragged on, and her focus had been shattered more times than she cared to admit. She needed to clear her head, so she grabbed her jacket and decided to take a walk through the nearby park to shake off the lingering tension. As she stepped outside into the crisp autumn air, she took a deep breath, letting the cool breeze wash over her. The leaves had started to change, painting the city in shades of gold and orange. Normally, she would have found the scenery calming, but today, her mind was a whirlwind of thoughts she couldn’t seem to tame. As she walked, she found herself wondering what Ethan was doing now. Did he live nearby? What was his life like outside of the spotlight? She realized, with some annoyance, that she was curious about him in a way she hadn’t been curious about anyone in a long time. It irritated her to no end. She didn’t have time for distractions. Not now. Not ever. Yet Ethan’s face kept intruding on her thoughts, uninvited and impossible to ignore. Lily was halfway through the park when her phone buzzed again. This time, it wasn’t Nina, but an email notification. She pulled her phone out of her pocket and glanced at the screen, her heart skipping a beat as she recognized the sender. It was from the CEO of Donovan & Rose. Subject line: “Important New Client.” Her breath hitched as she clicked the email open, scanning the contents quickly. They had just secured a major new account, and the CEO wanted Lily to head the campaign. It was an enormous opportunity—one that could propel her career to heights she had only dreamed of. But then her eyes caught on a familiar name buried in the email. Ethan Carter. Lily blinked, rereading the sentence twice just to make sure she wasn’t imagining things. But there it was, in bold letters, staring back at her. The new account was none other than Ethan’s upcoming music project, and the CEO wanted her to spearhead the marketing efforts for his new album. “What the—” Lily muttered under her breath, her mind reeling. This was a joke. It had to be. Of all the people in the world, why him? She had spent the entire day trying to forget about him, and now, it seemed fate had other plans. Her phone buzzed again, this time with a follow-up message from her assistant. “Hey, Lily! Just saw the email. Congrats on the new project! The team’s really excited about working with Carter. Let me know if you need anything as you get started.” Lily stared at the screen, dumbfounded. She should have been thrilled. She should have been over the moon at the chance to work with such a high-profile client. But instead, all she felt was a rising sense of dread. Working with Ethan Carter meant seeing him again. Frequently. It meant conversations, meetings, and… a proximity she wasn’t sure she was ready for. The man had gotten under her skin after one brief interaction—what would happen if they had to spend hours together, collaborating on his campaign? Her heart raced, her mind whirling with the implications. She wasn’t used to being thrown off balance like this. She had always prided herself on being calm, composed, and in control. But Ethan Carter was like a storm she couldn’t predict or avoid. She needed to get it together. This was work, just like any other project. Ethan Carter might be a famous musician, but that didn’t change the fact that she was a professional. She had worked with high-profile clients before, and she could do it again. Squaring her shoulders, Lily pocketed her phone and started walking back toward her apartment, her mind made up. She wasn’t going to let some rock star mess with her head. She was going to nail this campaign, just like she always did. The next morning, Lily arrived at the Donovan & Rose office, feeling more centered. She had spent the previous evening preparing herself mentally for the project, determined to treat Ethan like any other client. She wasn’t going to let their brief encounter interfere with her professionalism. As she stepped into the sleek, glass-walled office building, she greeted her assistant, Megan, who handed her a fresh cup of coffee and a stack of files. “Morning, Lily! The team is meeting at ten to go over the Carter project. Everything’s set up in the conference room,” Megan said brightly. “Thanks, Megan. I’ll be there in a minute,” Lily replied, giving her a nod before heading to her office. She set her coffee down on her desk and took a deep breath, glancing at the clock. There was still half an hour before the meeting, which gave her just enough time to review the project details. She opened the file Megan had prepared for her, skimming through the notes. Ethan’s new album was a comeback project, his first in nearly three years. According to the brief, it was supposed to be more personal, more introspective than his previous work. The label was banking on it to revive his career, and they wanted a marketing campaign that would showcase his evolution as an artist. Lily couldn’t help but feel a flicker of curiosity as she read through the notes. The album sounded like it had potential. If she could just focus on the work itself, maybe she could forget about the man behind the music. But as soon as that thought crossed her mind, her phone buzzed, interrupting her focus. It was a message from Nina. “OMG. Just heard the news. YOU’RE WORKING WITH ETHAN CARTER!?!?!?!” Lily groaned, resisting the urge to throw her phone across the room. Of course, Nina would be excited. Before she could respond, there was a knock on her office door. She looked up to see Grant, one of her colleagues, poking his head in. “Hey, Lily. Just wanted to check in before the meeting. You ready for this?” Grant asked, stepping inside with a grin. Lily nodded, her expression professional. “I’m ready. It’s just another project, right?” Grant chuckled. “Maybe. But this is Ethan Carter we’re talking about. The guy’s a legend. This campaign could be huge for us.” “I know,” Lily replied, her voice measured. “But we need to treat him like any other client. The goal is to make sure the campaign reflects his vision while meeting the label’s expectations.” Grant nodded, though his excitement was still palpable. “Sure, sure. But come on, you’ve got to admit it’s a little exciting. The guy’s a rock star.” Lily forced a smile. “Exciting isn’t exactly the word I’d use.” Grant raised an eyebrow. “What, you’re not a fan of his music?” “It’s fine,” Lily said with a shrug, not wanting to dive into her complicated feelings about Ethan. “Let’s just stay focused on the task at hand.” Grant chuckled again, clearly not picking up on her discomfort. “All right, boss. Whatever you say.” By the time the meeting rolled around, Lily had managed to calm her nerves. She sat at the head of the conference table, her team assembled around her as they went over the details of the campaign. The room was buzzing with energy, everyone eager to get started on the project. Halfway through the meeting, Lily’s phone buzzed on the table. She ignored it at first, keeping her attention on the presentation, but when it buzzed again a moment later, she glanced down to see who was messaging her. Her breath caught in her throat. Ethan Carter. The message was simple, yet it sent a wave of unease through her. “Looking forward to working with you.” Lily’s pulse quickened as she stared at the screen, her mind racing. This was just business. Nothing more. But something told her that working with Ethan Carter was going to be anything but simple. The rest of the day passed in a blur. Meetings, phone calls, and a steady stream of emails kept Lily busy, but no matter how much she tried to focus on the work, Ethan’s text message lingered in the back of her mind. By the time she finally left the office that evening, the sun had already set, and the city streets were bathed in the warm glow of streetlights. Lily walked briskly toward the subway station, eager to get home and unwind after the long day. But as she descended the steps into the underground station, she couldn’t shake the feeling that things were about to get a lot more complicated. Looking forward to working with you. Those six words replayed in her head, over and over, like a song she couldn’t stop humming. Why had he texted her? Was it just a courtesy, or was there something more to it? Was she reading too much into it? She didn’t have time to ponder these questions as her train arrived, and she stepped on board, finding a seat near the door. The rhythmic hum of the train lulled her into a trance, and for a moment, she let her mind wander. Working with Ethan Carter was going to test her in ways she hadn’t anticipated. It wasn’t just about the campaign anymore—it was about navigating the strange connection she felt with him, a connection she didn’t want to acknowledge but couldn’t seem to ignore. Lily closed her eyes, leaning back against the seat as the train sped through the tunnel. She didn’t know what lay ahead, but one thing was clear: Ethan Carter wasn’t just a stranger anymore. He was unforgettable.
