Jason rubbed his knee again. Coaxed the cake closer. Colby considered eating, and wasn’t certain he could. George turned another page. Colby held onto Jason a bit tighter, involuntarily. George lowered pages. Looked up. Colby had just taken a breath, and forgot to exhale. “Well.” George cleared his throat. Then did it again. “Well.” “It doesn’t have to be the final version, of course not, that’s one reason I wanted to come here, you know them better than anyone, I can make changes if—” Words. Rattling out over nerves. Covering up shakiness. He tried to haul them back. “You don’t have to like it, it’s all right, I understand.” “I’d say,” George said, “you know them pretty well. Stephen and Will. What they feel for each other.” “I hope so? I do love them. Of course so many people do.
