Onyx locked the gate behind her as she entered, before heading inside.
All she wanted was to settle down in her room, but as soon as she walked into the living room, she was greeted by her father's cold eyes that stared at her with a lot of viciousness.
“You useless thing! How dare you come back here without begging Eric!” He yelled, his index finger pointed at her. He trembled in anger as her stepmother coarsened him to calm down.
Yet as he stared at his ugly daughter, he could not help but want to beat her up.
Onyx remembered how her own father used to whip her even when she was being framed by Yuri. He did not hear her out at all and just beat her up. But right now, as Onyx stared at him, she couldn't be bothered to even mind him.
She walked lazily towards the stairs, her eyes devoid of any emotions.
Her own father had given up on her before and treated her as though she was dirt, and now, she couldn't be bothered about winning his affection.
Seeing that Onyx did not even bother to look at him, Mr Anderson wanted nothing but to beat up this good for nothing daughter, but in the end his wife, Imelda coarsened him to let it go. He could only clench his fists before pinching the space between his brows and calming his emotions.
He thought that Onyx would finally marry into the Jones family, and their business would finally be successful. But who knew that she would anger Eric Jones, forcing him to call off the engagement?
And instead of begging him, she had actually agreed to it.
He really wanted to beat her to a pulp, yet Imelda managed to calm him down before he did anything drastic.
He could only wait for the Jones family to arrive later in the evening. Maybe Eric could be talked into changing his mind?
Meanwhile, Onyx pushed her room door open, only to be greeted by her cozy bedroom.
This bedroom had become her favorite place.
Everything looked the same, and not a single thing was out of place.
An unfathomable emotion washed over her as she made her way to the bathroom, staring at her reflection in the mirror.
Before she was reborn into Onyx's body, Zara was a very beautiful woman who many men sought, but because of her mission to take down the tiger for her father, she had never entered into a relationship. Every relationship she had was just a fake one, wanting to get closer to the enemy.
She had only found out that she had been used on the day of the overall attack.
Not only had she failed, but she had also sustained a bullet to the chest from her father.
She had been nothing but a pawn in his hands.
As she examined her face, she couldn't help but notice that it looked like poisoning.
She pushed the trains of thoughts aside before taking a shower.
She did not flinch as she scrubbed the arm she had scraped, causing blood to ooze from it. This was nothing but a scratch compared to the gunshot wounds she had sustained while she lived as Zara.
After taking a bath, she dressed her wound before rummaging through her wardrobe, seeing that all she had was a bunch of girly clothes she usually wore. She pinched the space between her brows as she thought about how she had dressed up all feminine to attract Eric's attention.
She changed into a blue floral dress before picking up her purse and heading out to buy some shirts and baggy pants with her last money.
When she returned, she went straight up to her room to rest for a bit before the Jones family arrived.
It was finally half past seven.
The knock on the door pierced through her ears, and she groaned in frustration.
“Who is it?” She demanded, her voice marred with a lot of resentment for whoever had woken her up from sleep.
“Sir asks for the first young Miss's presence.” A maid's voice sounded, making Onyx's eyes flutter open lazily.
It looked like Yuri and Eric were already back.
She washed her face before heading downstairs.
As she made her way down the stairs, she coughed at the sight of the Jones family sitting on the sofa, with her father on the opposite sofa, while Yuri and her mother, Imelda were nowhere to be found.
Just as Onyx reached the bottom of the stairs, she caught sight of Yuri who was holding tea.
“Ah, Sister Onyx is finally here.” Yuri announced, making Eric, who had been quiet all along, turn to meet her gaze. When he saw her, his eyes widened a bit before returning to normal.
Not only had Onyx's temperament changed, but she had also started wearing baggy shirts and pants, tying her hair into a ponytail, with her bangs falling over her forehead. She looked completely different.
The two stared at each other for a fleeting second, but Eric averted his gaze, feeling repulsed by Onyx's face.
Mr Anderson turned to stare at his daughter who stood like a statue, knowing he couldn't do anything rash in front of the Jones family. He could only motion for her to come over.
Onyx proudly walked over, greeting Eric's parents.
His mother smiled fondly, but Mr Jones barely looked at her.
“Eric, can you see how well behaved Little Nyx is? So how can you say you want to call off the engagement?” Mrs Jones asked, feeling frustrated, while Onyx maintained her pleasant expectation. Mrs Jones had been one of the few people to actually like her despite her appearance, and she felt really grateful to the woman. But her mood completely changed as she stared at Eric.
“I don't mind it, Mrs Jones, If he wants to call off the engagement, then I agree to it” Onyx said, making her father glance at her with anger in his eyes. Why was his daughter so stupid?
“What did you say?” Eric asked, not believing his ears. He thought she would come back to her senses when she got home, but it turned out she was still agreeing to the break-up.
Was this really Onyx?
“If Eric wants to break off the engagement to be with my sister, then I will step aside to make them happy,” Onyx said, making Eric's veins pop in anger. How could this woman turn the tables just like that!
“Onyx, stop talking nonsense!”
“Tell me that you do not have feelings for my sister,” Onyx said, her eyes bearing into his, rendering him speechless.
“You had even murdered me before, for Yuri,” she wanted to say, but she merely just smiled before turning around and walking away, her heart aching.
Sometimes love ends up killing us slowly, and when we're given a second chance, we strive to stay alive even if it means losing our hearts.
This was the case for Onyx.
