Onyx felt her heart thump beneath her chest as she made her way to the stairs.
As expected, Eric could not refute her confrontation.
The eyes in which he had looked at her in her previous life made her heart pang with pain.
The look of pure disgust as he stared at her while she struggled to breathe.
The look of betrayal on their faces was something she did not want to see again.
“Onux! Stop right there!” Mr Anderson yelled, his teeth clenched.
He could not understand how dumb this daughter of his could be.
Even when the Jones family had actually come, she was still being nonchalant.
“Is there anything else you would like to say?” Onyx asked, putting her hand in her pocket as she turned to stare at the man. She did not even bother addressing him as her father. Left to her, she had no family. Her mother had passed away, leaving her with this man who only wanted her for his own greedy gain.
Mr Anderson stared at Onyx, his anger threatening to erupt, but once again, Imelda managed to calm him down.
She calmly smiled, turning to stare at Onyx .
“The Jones Family have come all the way from their home to settle you? Why don't you speak nicely?” She said, making Onyx smile, a smile that sent chills down everyone's shoulders. Not because of her appearance, but because of the coldness her eyes radiated.
“I'm breaking off the engagement.” Eric announced, rising to his feet and stepping out, and Onyx could not even be bothered to look at him.
She just turned to greet Mr And Mrs Jones before retiring to her room.
Mr Anderson was about to pass out, and Imelda tried to call him down.
Meanwhile, Yuri felt happy in her heart. Now that Eric was calling off the engagement, she would now be in his life. That was the one thing she had always wanted.
Running after the Jones family, she caught up with Eric while Mr and Mrs Jones entered the car that was parked on the pavement.
“Brother Eric!” She called out, and Eric turned to stare at the young woman who had stepped out of the house, her eyes shone so much calmness and meekness. Obedience even. She was far better than her sister.
“Take care on your way back.” She said with a shy smile, making him want to shake his head helplessly, but he just nodded before turning around and leaving.
Onyx entered her room, closing the door with a click before pinching the space between her brows. She just wanted time alone, but she knew her father would come looking for her anytime soon. And just as she expected, a maid came to call her downstairs.
She had barely taken the last step before a hot cup of tea came flying at her face.
She managed to dodge, sending the cup shattering on the marble floor.
She could understand his misery. After all, she was his hope to finally revive his company. But if she did not marry Eric, his plans would be shattered.
“You ungrateful daughter! I told you to apologize to Eric, did I not?” He yelled, but Onyx calmly tucked her hand into her pocket, calmly staring at him.
“Just because you asked me doesn't mean I have to do it, does it?” She asked, her face devoid of any emotions.
Mr Anderson felt that she had lost his mind, and wanted to pounce on her, but Imelda held him back.
“You should at least listen to your father. He wants the best for you, Nyx” she said, and Onyx turned to stare at her.
“First of all, you are not privileged to call me that, and secondly, I don't need your opinion.”
“Onyx!” Mr Anderson yelled, feeling his body tremble.
“How can I have such a daughter!” He yelled again, but Onyx did not even bother to say anything.
Yuri, on the other hand, felt happy in her heart.
“Sister Onyx does not mean what she says, father.” She voiced out, making the latter roll her eyes.
Once again, Yuri was the better daughter.
“Shut up.”
She felt a slight pain in her heart which she quickly pushed aside. She told herself she needed not to feel this way.
She turned to return to her room, and she could hear Mr Anderson yell for her to come back and apologize. But how could she apologize to the mother and daughter duo?
They had ruined her in the previous life.
In fact, Eric was not even the real culprit. It was all Yuruband Imelda’s doing. They had influenced Eric.
Even if she knew this, she could still not forgive him. For not being a man. He was easily swayed by the duo.
After she got to her room, she sighed in relief before taking another shower and lying on her bed.
It was already midnight, and she stared at the sky from her window, feeling unfathomable emotions swirl in her heart.
She had been reborn.
She needed to find him. The man called “the mask.” Only he could actually tell her everything that had happened before she was shot in her life as Zara.
Her gaze moved to stare at the computer not so far away, and she abruptly rose, going to sit in front of it.
She booted it, seeing the screen lit up before entering a program and punching a few keys.
After what seemed like thirty minutes…
Bullseye! She thought, as her lips curled up into a smile.
At least she had some money to live now.
She closed the laptop, climbing onto the bed and shutting her eyes.
The next morning came in a flash.
After freshening up, she clad herself in a pair of baggy black T-shirt and black pants, tying her hair up in a ponytail, with her fringes falling on her forehead.
When she headed downstairs, she caught sight of Yuri, who was sitting on the couch and scrolling through her phone.
She did not even bother to talk to her and just walked towards the door.
“Sister Onyx are you going out?” Yuri asked, as though she had just noticed Onyx, but the latter just hummed before walking out.
Yuri could not help but feel that Onyx had changed a bit, but she could not put her finger on it.
Why did she feel different?
Meanwhile, somewhere in the city, Ethan rushed into the office, his eyes marred with both disbelief and concern as he stared at the computer he was holding.
“Sir, a hacker hacked the central bank last night and took the money,” he reported.
The man seated behind the desk raised his eyes to stare at him, his gaze marred with glaciers that made him shiver.
“So you tell me that the central bank doesn't even have the capability to protect itself, and now my money has been stolen by a hacker?” He asked, picking up his cup of coffee before taking it to his mouth and tak
ing a sip.
Ethan felt the sweat that gathered on his forehead, but in the end, he nodded.
“Then find the hacker.” The man said, placing the cup back on the table.
