Today was Ary's twenty-first birthday and she was sitting alone in a motel room, watching cable TV on a television set that was older than she was. She wasn't normally an overly sentimental person, but she was feeling pretty nostalgic today. This should be the greatest day of her life. She should be getting phone calls and texts from all her friends and family, wishing her a happy birthday. All she had gotten was an awkward voicemail from Jack, warning her about alcohol and bad judgement, and a text from Maddie that just said "happy birthday".
