Interlude: Seven days earlier before the infiltration team set out.
Louis Nicholas was debriefing Jasper, Mike, and Saiki in the barracks. Behind them was a wagon full of supplies to get them through their journey.
Their Protection Squadron uniforms were changed into tunic and trousers to mimic the fashion style of Duke Gustave's dominion.
"This mission of yours will be as important as protecting the city from the age of the winter demons. Do not, in any under circumstances, be involved or get affected by the lives of the people you'll meet in Gustave's dominion, that could jeopardize the mission. Know that you are going there to gather intelligence, not to be a hero of some sort. You understand?"
Jasper raised his hand.
"Obergruppenführer, why are you advising us not to do what you just told us?"
Louis replied simply, "I've been in Gustave's Dominion when I was stationed there during the war. It'll defy your common sense that even travelers have to abide by sets of rules and statutes Gustave had made. So just think of the abnormal things there as a normal occurrence. Volksfuhrer has a plan, just do your job."
"Sir yes sir!"
Nicholas glanced at the werebeast, he pulled something out from the wooden box located on the wagon and gave it to her.
"This is a potion our magician concocted to help you sober quickly."
"Sober for what?" Jasper tilted his head to the side, puzzled.
"There may be a possibility that a villager there might offer you a drink,"
"Are you saying that they might offer us a booze?" Mike said.
"Yes, this is just for precaution, use it when you think it's necessary or when it is hindering you from completing your mission. They will assume the werebeast is underage and they'll probably not give her booze so that's all. Take it from the man who has experience. The last thing to remember, when the missions seem futile or for instance, failed, you are to retreat immediately. The first village that you'll infiltrate is the Yutia village, 15 kilometers away from the main city. Now, the winter is coming and I want you to get as much intel as possible. That's all, you may now leave."
The three Protection Squadron concluded the deliberation with a salute.
…
Seven days later, one hour before the Protection Squadron infiltration group arrived at the village of Yutia, the ambassador of the Duke Gustave's dominion, Peter Walters was in an audience with Duke Gustave himself. Next to Gustave is a person whose figure was concealed by its robe and hood.
Peter Walters who was kneeling in front of him, puzzled, wondered why the duke asked an audience, he asked the revered Duke with heads lowered.
"Your Grace, why did you call me here?"
The Duke sternly replied, "I've called you here to discuss your treason to the state."
The moment he heard the duke's response, Peter's eyes widened in shock. His knee started to quiver and beads of sweat started trickling down his face, an undeniable proof that Peter did something.
"Wha...what are you talking about, Your Grace...How can I...your...humble and lo-loyal servant...be...po-possibly betray you?" He stammered out a question.
"Loyal servant...how dare you call yourself loyal servant when you feed me with your lies about the situation in Eighbury City."
Eighbury City? What does he mean? Does it mean that he was found out? that the story he concocted to deceive the Duke wasn't really true. His countenance hardened at the response as he began to formulate a reasonable explanation to this, but there was none.
Peter remained silent as his guilt and regret filled his body.
The Duke handed a piece of paper to Peter and had him read it. It was a pamphlet created by the UNSP in recruiting followers for insurrection and rebellion against the state.
"This man beside me gave me this pamphlet, if it wasn't for him, I would be possibly believing your lies. How presumptuous…"
"But You-your Grace! I was threatened, I was threatened that they'll kill me if I tell you the truth. I had no choice back there but to oblige to their wish...But it doesn't mean my loyalty had diverted. To prove that, I've sent an assassin to assassinate the head of the UNSP, believe me! I swear!"
Peter told the Duke about his assassination attempt to the Volksfuhrer to sway his anger welling inside of him, he thought that this would be enough to get him out of his treacherous act, but he was wrong.
Suddenly, the hooded man spoke to the Duke with a lowered head.
"What the ambassador is saying is true Your Grace, he had sent an assassin to kill the head of the UNSP, but they utterly failed. The assassins he sent were executed. Though I can't confirm this since it came from the rumors, seeing that the city hasn't gone out of control means that the head of the city was still alive."
Hearing that, Duke Gustave's body began to shiver in anger.
"So that means that...we've let them run rampant in a city?? And my ambassador told me nothing but lies? How will His Majesty react to this....Oh...my….My King!" Duke Gustave bellowed in rage as he reached for his sword affixed to his waist.
"Yeeeeeeeeek!!!" Peter shrieked in fear.
"You...you are an utter disgrace!!! To feed me with lies!! I will…I will…"
The Duke sheathed his sword and swung it, with one smooth motion, sliced through his neck.
Peter's head thudded onto the ground. But it didn't quell the Duke's rage.
"Those damn rebels...I, Elm Gustave, shall burn them to the ground."
…
Back at the present.
After the lively reception dinner, Aida and Amelia let their drunk guest to the inn. In keeping with the rest of the village, it was built from tidy red bricks and boasted an impressive chimney. The Protection Squadron, even in their intoxication, doubt how a farming village affords all this.
"I'm f****d up man...I think I'm going to throw up."
"Don't you f*****g dare throw up your disgusting fluid on my back or I'll kill you."
"I cquent holdjit anyimore."
"Don't worry, we'll be in our room soon, we will fix that drunk state of yours."
Jasper tried to tell off Mike, who had gotten so drunk he'd had to carry him to their room on his back, However, the beer had made his face so red and his gait was tottering that it looked like he'd tripped at any moment. Aida gave a concerned bow as the pair approached.
"Are you two all right? I'm so sorry. We tend to get a little carried away here."
"No, no...I'm fine…" Jasper groaned.
"Sorry, ma'am for having you look at my sorry state."
Aida chuckled. She glanced at the kid following them.
"Hey little girl, you will be all asleep in this room. Since your brothers are drunk, you'll be the one to contact me when their situation goes bad. Okay?"
Saiki just nodded her head in agreement.
"f**k men. I think I need to get this out…" Mike said to Jasper who was obviously still holding on, lifting him.
"It seems that Mister Mike will be throwing up, please let me handle him." Aida offered.
Jasper hurriedly accepted, to free himself from the load. "Thank you…"
"I'm going to help him throw up outside. Amelia, Mom's going to keep an eye on Mike, so could you be a dear and show them up to their room?"
Amelia nodded.
"Thank you, dear," Aida replied as she led Mike outside.
"Thank you, Ma'am Aida...Gugh."
"Oh my! P-Please don't throw up until we're outside!"
Jasper turned around, worried, but Amelia called for him and bade the mister and the little girl to follow her. The girl led them up to the second floor.
"Here's your room."
"Ah...thanks, sweetie. I had a bit too much to drink, too, so I'm gonna go ahead and sleep it out…" Saiki helped Jasper get on his bed as he thanked Amelia. As he did though, he noticed something.
There was a hint of trepidation in the little girl's expression. Her smile from before was gone...and her eyes were swimming though she was agonizing over something.
Then, she said something.
"Mister…You have to hurry and get out of…" She was trying to tell him something. However, the girl wasn't able to get the end of her message out. Aida had come up the stairs with Mike in tow."
"Thank you for showing our guests their room, Amelia."
The moment Aida showed up, Amelia went silent and scampered down to the ground floor. Aida, who was lending Mike her shoulder, took her place.
"Is Mister Jasper's brother okay?"
"Oh, he's fine. Once he threw up, he seemed a lot better."
"I still feel wasted. I want to lie down on a bed and sleep this out." Mike said as he flopped himself onto the floor. Even though he had already thrown up, he still looked pretty wasted. Saiki and Amelia reacted as they both carried his body to the bed.
Having him placed on the bed, Amelia walked back and waved her hand to Saiki.
"If you need anything please don't be shy to tell me, I'm in the ground floor reception hall 24/7."
Saiki nodded. As she confirmed that, the two closed the door as they left.
Leaving the three behind the room, Saiki felt something tugging her robe.
"Hey...give us the potion," Jasper ordered. Saiki pulled two vials of red liquid to Mike and Jasper and they gulped it.
As soon as they emptied the vial, the two sighed as if they had just reached the peak of the mountain.
"Okay. I'm all sober!" Mike who looked pretty wasted earlier now looked lively.
"This potion is truly incredible." Jasper praised as he rose from the bed.
The atmosphere in the room quickly changed.
"It's time to discuss about this place...Jasper." Mike said.
"I certainly agree."
