The Divine Spear of Fiery Heavens Part 2

2019 Words
After crossing seas and mountains, The Divine Spear of Fiery Heavens crashed in Eighbury. The magic spear landed in the High-End Residential District's park, a hot spot for social gatherings. On impact, the already luminous weapon let out its largest flash of light yet. The crimson glare was so intense, it was visible all the way from the Former-Commoners' Residential District. After the light, the spear emitted a bright-red blast of flame. It instantly spread three hundred feet in each direction before spiraling up in the air. All in the city wondered what was happening. As the pillar of flame rose into the sky, it took the shape of a person. The fires writhed as though possessing a will of their own, molding themselves into a form of a man's torso. The crackling blaze became the visage of an austere man with long hair and beard. "IT'S HIM!!!" Some of the district's nobles trembled as they stared into the fiery face, They had seen its like before. Eventually, the crimson man's mouth moved to speak. Its words blew through the whole of Eighbury like a tempestuous wind. "I am His Majesty's loyal knight, I am Elm Gustave, I speak to you now to the insects defiling His Majesty's sacred garden and to those foolish enough to ally with them." And with that, the fiery figure raised its molten arms to the heavens and spoke the incantation. That moment, the figure crumbled from the base up and release a tidal wave of awesome fire. In the blink of an eye, the flood consumed half the district. And the fires didn't stop spreading there. Plants, buildings, and people were all burned away indiscriminately. "Ahhhhhhhhhhhh!" "What's going on?!" "I don't want to die!!!" "Eeeeeeeeek!!!" "It's Duke Gustave's Spear of Heavenly Fire! We're doomed!" Engulfed in flame, the residential area looked like hell on earth. Crimson tongues licked at the residences' beautifully tiled walls, consuming them along with the lustrous blue rooftops that had served as a symbol of the noble's statuses. However, what really made the landscape seems hellish were the screams of the residents. Some people had to flee their burning houses with only the clothes on their backs. Others greedily tried to make off with the riches in tow only to be swallowed by the inferno. More still had already been reduced to human-shaped mounds of charcoal. Nobles and their employees fled every which way, trying desperately to escape the waking nightmares. … "Is everyone all right?" Ernest turned his gaze away from the window where he'd just watched the blazing figure vanish and now turned toward the government officials gathered in the governmental office room. Right before the spear landed, they'd reflexively thrown themselves to the ground at Ernest's instruction. Now, upon hearing his question, they gingerly rose back to their feet. Fortunately, none of them were injured. Eric's Palace, now a municipal office, was fairly close to the city's center, a fair distance from The Divine Spear of Fiery Heaven's impact site by the outer perimeter. That was not to say that the assembled ministers were of sound mind after the attack. Given their expressions, many of them were clearly panicking over the current state of emergency. "Volksfuhrer! Wh-What's going on…?!" Sophia asked. "It appears that the high-end district was hit by a spear-like projectile originating from the Gustave domain. The Kingdom has clearly launched some manner of magical attack against us." "B-But that must be…!" "C-Could it really be the Duke's infamous Heavenly Fire?!" "The attack he used in the war against Elba to destroy their massive base in a single night?!" Guilhem added. "Volksfuhrer, wh-what do we do?!" "The fire's gonna be here any minute now! We gotta get out of here!" "B-But not all the residents managed to get out yet…!" However, right as the ministers started getting useless. "Calm down." Ernest simply said, hoping to ease their worries. "There's a protocol for these." "First we need to evacuate the people, women and children are to be prioritized…" He glanced at Nicholas. "You, order the troops to help with the emergency evacuation but don't leave the city walls undefended as there is still a threat of monsters outside our perimeter." "Yes, Volksfuhrer." Nicholas saluted and left his office to carry out his orders. "I'll say this to you everyone...this is my mistake, I haven't drafted an emergency manual yet so you don't know what to do. So for the meantime or during this crisis, I'll be the supreme commander." Holes in his governance are starting to surface, he doesn't have much of a government official he can trust in this situation. Most of his ministers are mainly focused on procuring the city's needs and spreading the word of the UNSP throughout the western region. "Sophia, I want you to help Nicholas with the evacuation process. Tell him that they are to be moved in the Grand Plaza of Eighbury." "Yes, Volksfuhrer." Sophia saluted. "Blackbelly, you're friends with Zanac right? Is it possible for him to procure clothes and blankets for the evacuees? "It would be possible but it'll take some time…" Blackbelly answered. "Good, do it," Ernest ordered. Blackbelly saluted. "Okay, it's time to deal with this problem." Ernest declared. "Modern weapons didn't work so I'm at a loss here but…" Ernest faced Alwin. "You warned me about the impending attack, don't you think about spirits conversing with you? Well tell me, is there any way for this to end? The fire is still spreading as we speak…" "Good...tell me along the way." "Along the way?" "Yes, we are going to evacuate, this place is not safe anymore, it's better to join the survivors in the Grand Plaza." "I understand...Volksfuhrer." …. Meanwhile, the blaze ramped up in intensity, as if trying to pursue the fleeing townsfolk. The way the flames were spreading out and engulfing the city, it was like they had a will of their own. However, Ernest wasn't about to let that savagery continue. "Volksfuhrer...We're done evacuating the survivors!" "Good work." It's been ten minutes since the lance struck the residential area of Eighbury. This was his first report so far. But the crimson flames rage on, consuming everything on its path. "Fuck...fuck...fuck...fuck…!" Ernest cursed inwardly for his lack of proactiveness. He knew this would happen and yet he wasn't able to avoid it. He thought that the modern anti-air missiles system was enough to shoot down the lance but he was wrong. Now the drawbacks are the city being consumed by flames. His under construction city is turning to a grain of black sand as it was burned from the blazing flames. If this continues, Eighbury, the heart of the UNSP, would turn to dust. "Alwin what can we do to stop this thing? You said to me while we were heading here about spirits? Can you tell me about it?" "Uhm...about the spirits...ah ahh…?" Before Alwin could finish, he was interrupted "Don't think for a moment that your petty tricks are enough to escape my wrath!" A gale-force bellow rocked Eighbury. "Aaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhh!!!" A great wave of screams rose from the refugee-packed plaza. Cause for such renewed alarm was quickly evident. Having finally burned through the residential area, the conflagration stopped in front of the under-construction main street that is to be widened. ...Thousands of human-shaped flames began crawling out from the inferno. They slowly rose to their burning feet and began walking forward with their arms outstretched like the blind. With tottering, unstable steps, they crossed the main roads toward the former commoner's residential district of Eighbury, grabbing any buildings they could to spread their flames. Terrifyingly, though, the buildings weren't the only targets. Some even started gradually making their own way to escape toward the people gathered in Grand Plaza. "What the hell is that…?" By earth logic, it was utterly unfathomable. Ernest was taken aback. Gustave cackled scornfully. "Heh-heh-heh-heh-ahahahahahah!!!! Tremble in fear! Cower in terror! For this is the true might of my devotion! This is the might of my war magic. The Heavenly Spear! Once activated, its flames will burn their way to the end of the continent! This nation has nowhere you can hide! Now, die! Die! Atone for your sins with your lives! Perish for the sin of soiling His Majesty's sacred lands with your filthy, traitorous feet!!!!" "Eeeeeek!" "We're doomed! There's no way we can beat the Kingdom!" "Ruuuuun!" Having the flames walk toward them of their own volition was something beyond a nightmare. As such a hellish sight, the people of Eighbury finally knew the height of fear. Frenzied screams echoed from all directions as everyone scrabbled to be the first one out of the city. As long as the fire is still burning, trying to calm them would be an excuse of futility. With a bitter expression on his face, Volksfuhrer Ernest issued another order. "Sophia, Nicholas. We are going to evacuate the entire city! We're abandoning Eighbury." With Volksfuhrer Ernest Gonzales having given the order to evacuate, people in every district fled outside of the Eighbury walls. Protection Squadron with their G36 escorted them while remaining on watch as the threat of the winter demons is still prevalent. Terrified as they were of the fantastical flames that had finally swallowed up the entire high district, they rushed to the open gates with only the barest amount of luggage possible. The air around was filled with fearful, anxious screams. Amid all that, Ernest and his ministers remained fixed, steadfast in their positions and not without reason. A little under a minute later. "Fleeing isn't necessary. There's a way to break the spell." Alwin finally speaks! "What is it? Spill it out we don't have much time to waste…" Ernest urged Alwin. "Okay...The Divine Spear is war magic. To cast it, you have to spend years compressing blaze spirits together. And as long as its core, the cursed spear that binds and controls the spirits, is intact, the fires will never go out! But the opposite is true, too. If you destroy the spear, you can break the spell!" "But how do you know all of that…?" The question came from Sophia. Alwin shook his head. "I...don't know…" "You don't know?" "I can't be sure how I know. But...even though I'm not sure why...I know this will work! The moment I saw those flames, I knew what kind of magic it was, what it did, everything. It all just popped into my head. It was like...it was like I'd known since before I was ever born." "...I see," Ernest muttered under his breath. "You probably think I'm crazy, but it's true! If we run, the fire will follow us forever! As long as the cursed core exists, it'll never stop! That's how the spell works! Please, you have to believe me!" Ernest seems to have a gist of the reason why Alwin knew about this. In the novel and anime he read, he has elven characters, most of them used spirit magic, maybe it was an innate skill for them to understand how spirits interact with the world. Though it was just a literary reference, it's possible that it may be true. "All right. I believe you. But the question is how do we destroy it? Modern missiles failed to even scratch that spear let alone destroy it." "That was before the spell activated. Back then, the spear was strong because all of the blaze spirits converged inside it. Now that the spear is activated, though, the blaze spirits are scattered throughout the city. Given its current state, an attack like one of the ones before could easily destroy it." Hearing that, Guilhem asked Ernest. "Volksfuhrer, do you have any of those light arrows left?" "They are called missiles Guilhem." Ernest corrected and continued, "I don't have any missiles left in the patriot system and the CIWS are not in the right elevation to destroy it. But don't worry, I have something up my sleeve. This is my mistake and this will be my time to fix it." And thus, Ernest opened his system.
