As he walks through the streets of the burning city, Ernest, with his system opened, browses in the weapon's tab to destroy the spear and end this tragedy.
The spear struck the high-end residential of Eighbury, and the heat conflagration sent wave after wave of searing wind to the point it made his skin felt burning. But he persevered, if he wants to survive in this world, he has to destroy everything that comes in his way.
The spear is a threat that he had expected but failed to defend, he thought that modern anti-air missiles are enough to take down a magical spell but he was wrong. This world is completely different compared to Earth.
'Imagine if I don't have this power...what could become of me?'
He questioned himself.
He was just an ordinary person back from Earth who loves strategy games, he didn't expect to be whisked into this world after his death. This world is dangerous to the likes of him as the world itself is similar to the customs of the medieval era where a normal person doesn't have a say in their ruler. Without this power, he'll be just a normal person here, without this power, he'll probably experience the horror of Duke Gustave's governance, and without this power, he can't defend himself.
But luckily, he has this power, even if modern weapons aren't that effective against magical spells, at least he has the power to at least defend himself and the foundation he created.
'Thank you…'
Ernest appreciated the system. Despite its purpose of making him a tyrant. This world is survival of the fittest, and if the system is offering him a safe haven by giving him a quest that will lead him to seize the supreme power, he will surely follow it.
'Now it's time to utilize your power.'
Ernest had been holding back from using the power of the system, he wanted to slowly develop technology so that the locals here can understand its mechanism before upgrading to its advanced form. But today, he realized, he doesn't have time for that. The modern anti-air missile system failed to intercept the Divine Spear of Fiery Heavens. This is a signal to him that he must seize power quickly, absorb many followers for tyrant points, and become its supreme leader.
At this point, he had decided. He'll modernize the city as quickly as possible for protection against the unknown in this world.
…
Walking for about ten minutes, he finally met some obstacles. Fiery figures burning down wooden houses started jumping from the roof. Ernest, equipped with an M9 Beretta, struck his pistol up and shot down the falling fiery figures. As the bullet bustled in the air, it pierced through the fiery figures, but instead of dropping to the ground and flickering, it got up, as if the bullet didn't wound the figures. Ernest realizes that they are not a simple enemy, they can't be shot down by conventional means. If he wants to end those figures, he'll have to destroy the spear itself.
So instead of fighting them, Ernest ran towards their source of existence. The spear.
With the system interface in front of him, he chose the most efficient single-use weapon that could possibly shatter the spear to bits.
[Purchase complete:]
As the system notified Ernest about his purchases, something heavy fell onto his shoulder, making his speed decrease. It was at that moment that the thing he bought materialized in this world.
[M72 Law]
A portable single-use anti-tank weapon. If what Alwin said about the spear being weakened the moment the spell activated, an explosion as strong as the missiles is enough to destroy it.
Carrying the Law on his shoulder, Ernest ran towards the exact location of the spear. Fiery figures tried their best to stop him but Ernest was just too fast thanks to his daily exercises regimen.
Catching up to his breath, Ernest vision focused on the fiery tornado wreaking havoc in the residential district. In the middle of the vortex, a spear emanating menacingly was found.
Seeing the target, Ernest dropped to one knee and aimed the M72 Law at the spear. Thankfully, the spear user, Duke Gustave didn't notice him arriving right in front of it. It seems as though something mysterious is concealing his presence.
But there's no time to ponder, Ernest just has to push the trigger and end this tragedy. The fiery figures from behind get closer and closer to him. The moment they thought the distance was enough, they leaped towards Ernest, stopping him. However, they were a second's late, Ernest had already released the unguided warhead and was now hurtling toward the spear.
"AAAAAAAAAAAAARGH!!!"
The warhead penetrated the fiery vortex and smashed head-on into the crimson spear. An explosion rocked in the air, accompanied by a violent flash…
When the dust settled, not a trace of the spear remained.
…
A pillar of smoke and flame billowed from the high-end residential district's peak, and everyone gazed up at it. Sophia and Nicholas reacted with cries of admiration at their Volksfuhrer's courage, will, and determination.
The explosion wasn't the only visible change, either.
"Impossible…! Whe-when did you appear here…?!?!" Gustave, who had manifested as a blazing colossus, screamed as his luminous flames were scattered to the wind. The fires throughout the city responded in kind, losing their vigor and vanishing into nothingness.
"L-look! The...fires…"
"They're going out…"
"...The blaze spirits were freed from the curse," Alwin murmured as he watched the inferno flicker and wane.
The flames were gone, and snow was falling gently from the winter sky. Ernest looked out at the blackened city. Eighbury's high-end residential area had been burned to the ground, along with the construction machinery with it. However, victory comes at a cost.
"Arrgggghhhh!!!"
Ernest felt an excruciating pain behind his back, his uniform was burnt from the fiery figures that leaped at him earlier when he fired the ordnance. They successfully landed in the nick of time.
"It f*****g HURTS!!!" Ernest let out a cry of anguish. "System...can...you...use...the...status generation? I really need it right now…"
A whirl of white light surrounded Ernest. The burnt skin in his back started to heal, returning it back to its original features. Ernest sighed a relief after getting fixed by the system.
"Ah...shit." He sighed… "It's over...I've defeated the flames…"
Ernest rose to his feet and glanced around him.
"Looks like we're going to reconstruct everything again…"
…
Ernest returned to the grand plaza of Eighbury, where he was met with a warm welcome and loud cheers.
"Hey! There he is! Volksfuhrer!"
"Th-that's incredible! He took down that giant monster by himself?!"
"Thank you! Volksfuhrer!"
"Long live! Volksfuhrer!"
"Thank you, Volksfuhrer!"
The townsfolk, seeing that the fire had gone out, streamed back into the city.
They were all wondering the same thing: Had Volksfuhrer really defeated the creature of flame? When they saw him standing in the grand plaza, the battlefield's front line, the citizens let out a resounding cheer. Ernest looked over the crowd as a tidal wave of joy washed over them all.
As if they were just the sound of rain outside a window. Ernest thought so. His consciousness was completely separated from his flesh. Even if he was healed by the system, it exhausted him. The system only speeds up the healing process, making his body feel tired. If he relaxed his attention just a little, he would tumble to the floor immediately.
No, it was already fine to tumble down. Because the match had been decided, and Ernest had won.
He walked. With the cheers at his back, he passed through the crowds.
"Volksfuhrer! Well done back there! I can't believe you've defeated that monster." Nicholas said.
"Well, the monster was just weak...so."
Nicholas chuckled at his joke, "Weak? That spell can obliterate a city with its fire and you said it was just weak? You're really something, Volksfuhrer. So...what are my next orders."
"Escort...the...people...back into their city and resume operations. We can't afford to waste time as the enemy had fired the first shot."
Nicholas saluted and left Ernest to carry out his duties.
Next, Blackbelly and Guilhem approached him.
"Blackbelly, I want you to resume construction...and it also looks like you're going to have to reconstruct the city…"
"Don't worry Volksfuhrer, with the construction workers coming from the southern cities, the reconstruction will finish quickly."
"Thank you for the assurance...and Guilhem, you'll have to procure materials for our new workers for faster reconstructions...I'll leave it to you."
"Yes sir!!!"
Next, Alwin walked forward and met him.
"Alwin you were right, it got destroyed the moment my weapon struck it."
"Yeah...but you look like you're injured sir...and your uniform…."
"Ah, this?"
Ernest glanced over his shoulder and saw his uniform having a gaping hole, exposing his back. "Don't worry, it seems that the blaze spirits had healed me as their thanks for freeing them from the curse." Ernest lied.
"I see...well I gotta help the others now. We'll have to distribute food and water to the survivors after all." Alwin said.
"Okay, you do your job."
And now lastly, the last person to approach him, Ernest suddenly felt relaxed.
Sophia welcomed him with her arms spread.
Ernest collapsed into her bosom. Sophia hugged him into her chest and…
"Well done...Ernest…"
She hiccuped. On her face, tears were dripping down.
"Were you that...worried?"
"I was! Of course, I was! *sob* you took a perilous journey to the high-end residential area knowing that you can get yourself killed. And destroying the spell that no one could've possibly defeated, what kind of i***t are you! Unbelievable! Stupid stupid stupid!"
Ernest let out a soft chuckle as his retort was exposed.
"Don't worry...it'll take more than that to defeat me…"
"And you're still saying that?! How stupid can you be?"
Saying that Sophia hugged Ernest with greater force. From the skin squeezing him hard, Ernest could feel Sophia's warmth.
'Ahh, this heat.'
This heat, it's making him feel soft inside. His heart is beating as fast as if he had completed a 100-meter dash. It makes him wonder why he is feeling this way. It was like there was something that he needed to say to her.
He remembered the time when he was asked by Sophia if he likes her or not. Ernest didn't respond, but it seems as though he wants to answer that. She was the first person he interacted with in this world, helped him manage the UNSP he founded and teases each other during free time. If Sophia hadn't been there, there was no way he could've come here.
He had decided he would answer it.
"...Sophia."
Ernest took a single deep breath and hugged Sophia with all the strength he had left.
Sophia was startled…reacting to his soft voice.
"Wha-what are you…"
"Can...you...be...my…"
But, before he could finish his sentence, his consciousness started slipping away, making him slowly fall asleep.
Sophia who was on the edge of her seat...pouted. Ernest fell into slumber.
