After the speech, Ernest heads to his governmental office in the Palace. He peered down from his window and saw the ongoing reconstruction of the city that had been burned down by Duke Gustave's tactical spell.
To tell the truth, this attack had greatly affected the construction plan in the city of Eighbury, meaning that the construction projects that were calculated to end after the age of the winter demons or simply winter season, were delayed.
It disrupted his plan and now they are going to focus their efforts on procuring materials for the soldiers who will go to war against Duke Gustave.
But assuming the numbers of troops stationed in Gustave's domain, to defend the Crentian Reich, Ernest has to introduce conscription, increasing his army. Which turned out smoothly as Ernest knew that the people's sentiment made them want to join the war.
Guilhem's mission is to procure military hardware for the troops; they are now not limited to assault rifles, sniper rifles, or heavy machine guns. Using the system, he had introduced a variety of modern weaponry. It would be nice to this world though if he can summon military vehicles such as a humvee or artillery like howitzer but considering the terrain, the lands, the roads, and the logistics to carry them, it was impossible to do that for now. So he gave up on the idea of summoning them as logistics for this war against Duke Gustave.
Tomorrow, Lex will arrive in Eighbury, along with the additional workers from the south. This way, the rebuilding of the city and the construction of the city will be hastened.
In the middle of contemplation, three figures entered the room. Ernest turned around and saw familiar faces. The three saluted in unison.
"Volksfuhrer…"
They are the infiltration group he sent to Duke Gustave's domain to feed him information, but it failed as their emotions clouded their judgment.
"Mike, Jasper, and Saiki. I'm not pleased to see you here after learning of your mistake, jeopardizing the mission…"
"We are ver…"
"But since you're here, I'll humor you with deliberation." Ernest cuts off Jasper who is about to let out a pleading word.
Ernest sat on his chair, his feet resting on the table, and asked.
"So, what did we learn about Duke Gustave…"
Jasper, who seems to be the leader of the infiltration group started briefing Ernest their newly gained intel.
During their deliberation, Ernest cross-checked the facts he had learned from Louis Nicholas. Which all of which correlates. Duke's Gustave poor governance led to the downfall of western cities in the north, resorting to cannibalism to survive, the beatification decree, and its harsh punishments.
Ernest nodded along with Jasper's report, "But, I already heard about it, is there something new? Like the brigade? The rebel group in the north...tell me more about them." Ernest asked.
Jasper, who just finished reporting the situation of the village under Duke Gustave's rule, shifted to another topic.
"About the Red Brigade, they are a resistance movement formed in the north under the leadership of Count Grebel. Their mission is to topple Duke Gustave from power. I have made contact with one of them though, his name is Albarest. Unfortunately, he is having second thoughts about going into this city as they aren't certain if you are an enemy or not. Also...Volksfuhrer, I heard that the city was struck by the Divine Spear of Fiery Heavens…"
"There's no point in brooding about it. What's done is done. About your mission in the Duke Gustave domain, it was a failure. To be honest I could've suspended you here right now but after hearing that you're getting in touch with the resistance movements, the blue brigade, that alone made me reconsider. So I have a new mission for you two...specifically Jasper and Mike…"
Saiki, who was also in line with the two, gasped inwardly after not hearing her name for the upcoming mission. But she didn't ask why and let Ernest finish his words.
"I want you two to continue working with them while feeding us any strategic information they give you. I'll need intel on those rebels, too...There's no guarantee they'll stay an ally forever."
"Consider it done...Volksfuhrer, I swear to you that we will not fail this mission." Jasper and Mike bowed.
"I don't need assurances, I want results…" Ernest dismissed their polite gesture with a wave of the hand. "You'll receive new equipment, meet Nicholas in the barracks, he'll give you something. Now if you are now dismissed. As of right now, the Crentian Reich is on a war-footing against the Kingdom of Crentis, know that your mission is crucial to the country."
The two saluted...a second later, Mike spoke.
"Sir, this is just additional information Jasper forgot to tell you. The Divine Spear of Fiery Heavens, according to our intel, has to spend a fair deal of time-binding fire spirits to use that tactical spell. So he shouldn't be able to just pop them out. Also, there are refugees who seek shelter in this city, Volksfuhrer, they are from the Yutia village."
"Hmm...really. Thank you for the additional info. That spear was a great threat to us and now the threat has been neutralized, I'd say we have a great chance of winning this war. In the case of the refugees, as long as they fall under the definition of refugees, they'll be able to live here."
"I see, then it's good news. Then we'll have to take our leave, Volksfuhrer." The two saluted.
Ernest beckoned them with a wave of the hand, dismissing them. The two left the office leaving Saiki and Ernest inside.
"Saiki, are you perhaps thinking why I didn't include you on the mission?" Ernest asked.
Saiki tilted her head to the side, curious about the answer.
"That's because you are a child." Ernest simply declared and continued. "I assume that since you came from a country called Japan, specifically Tokyo. I have reason to believe that you were having a decent life there. But after the accident, you were whisked in this world as your soul transmigrated in the body of a werebeast, a slave in this world. To think that you were just ten years old back there who was heading to school, I admit, it pains my heart. You were just a kid and then you've been forced to witness the harsh reality of this world. A world to a body you're possessing whose future is nothing but darkness…." Ernest sighed, "But now you have returned with some intel, I have decided to cut off our deal. Simply put, you are free to do whatever you want. You can live in this country or you can live in it. What I'm trying to say here is that I want you to have a normal childhood in this world that I'll be creating."
"...Free...to...do...anything I want?"
To Saiki, this was huge. He had been in this world for years. She was just supposed to be a normal kid who has the right to have a normal life but the right was taken the moment she was transmigrated here. Her childhood days were ruined due to his master training him to become expressionless, cold-hearted killers. A child shouldn't experience that. But Ernest offered her a new path, a path that she'll gladly take.
"Yes, you're free. That was the deal we created, remember? After the mission, you'll be free."
Tears formed in the corner of her eyes. Ernest prepared as the girl in front of him was about to burst out crying.
"Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaa."
And there she goes.
…
One day earlier, at the same time, the Divine Spear of Fiery Heavens was destroyed.
"AAAAAAAAAARGHHH!!!"
"Y-Your Grace?!" Hearing the screams Pierre came running, but what he found shocked him. Both of the Duke's arms had been severed from the elbow down.
However, it was like Gustave didn't even hear him. The man merely stared at the blood gushing from his stumps in disbelief.
"H-How can this be…?! My treasured spear...was destroyed…?!" There was a quiver in the man's voice.
Through Treasured Spear, he'd been able to witness everything he had transpired in Eighbury. Of note, he'd seen Ernest dodging his Fiery Figures as he attacked him with a missile.
The missile, the flame-spitting, free-flying cannonball? And the stream of red lights. It was the first time he'd seen anything like it. Gustave had no idea what to make of it. For whatever reason, the southern rebellion had access to weapons that are unknown to this world.
Gustav had no idea.
There was one thing he was certain of, however. Those scuttling little things were no ordinary pests. They were a threat, not just from him, but to the entire kingdom, and even to King Philip.
"...!" The duke could not tolerate their continued existence, not for another minute, not for another second!
What kind of knight would Gustave be if he failed to protect the realm of his master's absence?! Was that conduct befitting a noble?!
"RRRRRRRGRAHHHHHH!!!!"
After cauterizing his wounds with magic fire, arms of crimson flames sprouting from his stumps, Gustave rose.
"Pierre!!!!"
The duke's eyes burned with rage as he looked down upon his aide.
"Y-yes, Your Grace?"
"Summon every soldier in the domain to the capital at once. The full might of our forces will march on Eighbury!"
"B-But didn't you delegate that to Marquis Leonhard?"
"That dithering incompetent allowed vermin to fester in His Majesty's sacred lands for over a month! He's useless to me! Relay those fools Leonhard and Brachride: We leave not a single ant alive in our wake! And unless they do their damned jobs and march, they too will find themselves tasting the flames of my wrath!"
