“Look, I need to take a rain check this weekend,” I told Ryan while talking on the phone Wednesday evening. I mentioned I was having dinner with my friend Clay and his partner Patrick Saturday night. Clay had called me earlier that week and invited me over. I didn’t even hesitate in accepting his invitation because I hadn’t seen him or Patrick in a while and Clay was an excellent cook. In fact, his cooking was so good that it caused a rift between him and Patrick. Soon after they’d started dating, Patrick complained that Clay’s cooking had made him put on weight.
