Chapter 2 - Old Letters

We washed our hands and grabbed some mixing bowls from the bottom cupboard beside the sink and grabbed the ingredients beside our mom and got to making the cookies. While we kneeded the dough into a spreadable consistency, I looked over at my mom who was putting the cookies onto a cooking sheet.  "So, uh...mom?"  "Yeah, Lucy?"  "Umm...why don't you leave dad? I mean, he drinks all the time and is constantly yelling at you and degrading you." She sighed.  "Lucy, we've talked about this before. I made a vow-" "Yeah, yeah, I know. You made a vow to be there for each other for better or for worse, and in sickness and in health. But mom, he's not treating you right. And Genny has to hear it every day from him, it's not ok. You deserve better. The BOTH of you deserve better." My mother turned around and looked at me in anger.  "How dare you! HOW DARE YOU! HOW DARE YOU, HOW DARE YOU, HOW DARE YOOOOOU!!!!" Genny leaned over to me and whispered in my ear. "You shouldn't of said anything, now she's gonna scream at the top of her lungs."  "HOW DARE YOU WALK INTO THIS HOUSE AFTER BEING GONE FOR EIGHT YEARS AND TELL ME WHAT I SHOULD DO WITH YOUR FATHER! YOU HAVE NO RIGHT TO ACT LIKE YOU RUN THIS HOUSEHOLD!"   "But mom, he's been doing this for years and you deserve better!"  'THAT IS NOT YOUR CALL, IT IS MY CALL!"  "Mom, I'm sorry, I just want you to be happy and dad doesn't make you happy."  "YOU KNOW WHAT? WHY DON'T YOU JUST GO UPSTAIRS? ACTUALLY, GO UP TO THE ATTIC AND GO THROUGH YOUR THINGS. YOUR FATHER AND I WANNA GET RID OF THINGS AND WE DON'T WANNA THROW AWAY ANYTHING YOU STILL WANNA KEEP!" I sighed. "Whatever! I was just trying to help."  "Well, you shouldn't help where it wasn't asked for or needed! You'll do better in society that way!" I didn't say anything else as I walked up the stairs towards the hallway. Once I got up the stairs, I grabbed the ladder for the attic and placed it underneath the door that lead to the attic. I climbed up the ladder and pulled the latch downwards and climbed through the mini door. As I got into the attic, there was nothing but dust, boxes, and old items sitting on top of each other. I coughed out the musty smell and flicked the switch on. I then slowly walked over to the boxes that were bunched up together in one spot. When I got to the boxes, I lifted them up one by one and put them in front of me. I then stood up and placed my hands on my hips as I looked down at the boxes. I then sighed. "Ok, Lucy, time to get looking through these boxes!" I began to open a box and rummage through the things. They were just old knick knacks that I no longer wanted, so I placed them back in the box. I leaned over to another box and opened up the top. As soon as I opened up the box, a I heard a tumble coming from one of the boxes, then something light spilled out of the box. I looked over to see a bunch of closed letters, addressed to Italy. I widened my eyes, realizing that it was too my old girlfriend, Isabella. With excitement, I picked them up and began to open them. The first one was dated Saturday, November 13th, 2010. I was sixteen. I began to read the letter. Dear Isabella,  I'm missing you already. I'm so pissed off at my mom for not allowing us to video chat each other on f*******:. I really wanted to see your face. I miss the way your brown eyes would look into mine and I miss hearing your laugh. I wish you didn't have to move back to Italy to take care of your grandfather. i wish you could've stayed here instead. Grade ten is not the same without you. Everyone here is just f****d up and they act stupid all the time. Our school dances were recently canceled because someone tried to bring in alcohol to the dance. If you were there, you probably would've stopped it.  I remember that night entirely...
