“Ok, but I still don’t know if I feel comfortable playing this role,” Kaitlyn said looking at Lavenia. “I mean, didn’t the last actress die while filming? And my hair is red, wasn’t the main character supposed to be a blond?”
“Yes, but the producers and directors have the writers going in a different direction,” Lavenia said pushing the script at Kaitlyn.
“So I can still say no right? You didn’t lock me into this yet,” Kaitlyn said raising her eyebrow.
“Well, yes, but don’t take too long. While I know they really want you, I know there are other actresses they are looking at. This could be your shot at the stars. We really want to get there right?”
Kaitlyn looked at Lavenia nodding before she settled back into her chair as she said “I’m reading it right now before I do anything else. I’ll have an answer to you later today.”
“Good,” Levenia said “I’ll let myself out. Talk to you later.” With that the former model turned agent stood to leave, she looked around the room with her chocolate eyes to find her things. Gathering them, she put her rain hood over her graying black hair and headed out of the house.
Kaitlyn waited till she saw Levenia drive out of the driveway. She sighed. “You know,” she said to herself “I do want to hit those heights, but I want to do it on my own merit. I don’t want to ride coattails of dead stars to get there.”
She looked back at the script’s opening scene as she said “This is just going to have me compared to Arara Praxon more than I already am. She died filming this. Not to mention, if I remember right, this is the one I heard rumors of them using the film from ten years ago.”
She knows she’s alone, but there has always been the insecure feeling that her likeness to the murdered actress had been why she was doing so well in the industry. It didn’t help as far as the public knew she had bought Anara’s house because it was the only place she could afford at the time. Plus it came with all the furnishings since the estate had not sold anything from within the house. It didn’t hurt Kaitlyn actually loved the house. She found the decorations were to her liking so had changed very little when she moved in.
“Let’s see what this script has in store for me,” she said before taking a drink of the wine next to her then started to read.
Hours later, she finished the script. She flipped back through to a couple of scenes checking out how they would work again. Finally, she picked up her phone. Scrolling down the contacts, she found the number she was looking for. She waited as she counted the rings. A silly habit she thought. Finally, the line picked up.
“Hey,” she said. “Yeah, I just finished reading it. … I don’t know. … It’s a dream role yes, but I still wonder. I mean, it took them ten years to get a new script. This project has been plagued with issues since Anara died. I don’t know if I want to step into that danger. … Yeah, but what if something happens on the set? … I don’t want to die to become famous. … Do I take the chance? … Ok, I’ll let you go. Thanks.”
She hung up the phone. Looking from the phone to the script and back, she considered what answer she should give Lavenia. She sighed softly before she dialed the number. When Lavenia answered Kaitlyn said, “I’ll take it, Lev, only if they want a redhead.”
“Oh they do,” Lavenia said sounding like Kaitlyn just gave her the world for her birthday. It worried Kaitlyn how happy Lavenia sounded. “I’ll have the contracts in my office in the morning. They will be ready for test shots the day after tomorrow.”
“That fast?”
“I told you they want you for this role.”
“I’ll see you in the morning,” Kaitlyn said before she hung up the phone. Getting up, she went to get another glass of white wine. She grabbed a bowl of fruit while she was in the kitchen. Taking them up to her working studio, she spent the rest of the day learning the lines she would most likely have to work through in two days.
As the moon rose, she stood at the window of her bedroom looking into the sky at it. “If doing this movie will help to find the way to solve your murder, then I will do my best to honor your work and life.”
She stood raising her glass to the moon in silence. Kaitlyn wished she had her mother’s gift for sensing and communicating with the spirits. She wanted Anara’s blessing on this role. She felt like she needed someone’s blessing. Something was very dark about this film and everything around it.
