Catherine’s breath caught in her throat as she and Jack stepped into the dimly lit back room of The Black Lion. The atmosphere was suffocating, the air heavy with the scent of cigarette smoke and something more sinister. Her eyes immediately locked onto the man at the head of the table, Mike. He radiated authority, and the silent, watchful men around him seemed like mere extensions of his will.
He was older than she expected, with a sharp jawline dusted with salt-and-pepper stubble. His piercing eyes flickered briefly toward her and then Jack, assessing them in a matter of seconds. Catherine swallowed hard, feeling every instinct in her body scream for her to run. But she couldn’t. Not now.
Mike’s voice cut through the tension like a knife. “I don’t know you.”
His words were simple, but they dripped with menace. Catherine could feel Jack tense beside her, but he remained silent, allowing her to speak first. She had rehearsed this moment in her head, but now that she was standing in front of Mike, her words felt inadequate, small.
“My name is Catherine,” she began, her voice steadier than she felt. I’m looking for my sister, Nia. She’s been missing for days, and I know she was connected to people who… know you.
Mike’s eyes narrowed ever so slightly, but his expression remained otherwise impassive. He leaned back in his chair, folding his hands across his chest. “You think I run a search and rescue business?”
The sarcasm in his voice stung, but Catherine pressed on. I don’t care about your business. I just want to know if you’ve seen her. If you know where she is, or if she’s in trouble… Please, I need to know.
There was a long, suffocating pause. Mike’s gaze flicked at one of the men seated at the table. The man, broad-shouldered and tattooed, leaned in to whisper something into Mike’s ear. Whatever it was, it made Mike raise an eyebrow, his interest seemingly piqued.
Mike said slowly, as though tasting the words. I remember that name. Pretty girl. But she got mixed up in things that were too big for her. He sat forward suddenly, his voice hardening. Why should I care where she is? If she owes me or my people, that’s her problem.
Catherine’s stomach churned. She knew Nia was in over her head, but hearing Mike confirm it brought the reality crashing down on her. She had to be careful now pushing too hard could make things worse.
“What did she owe you?” Jack asked suddenly, his voice breaking the silence.Mike glanced at him for the first time, his gaze cold. “More than either of you can afford to pay. ”Catherine’s heart sank. She didn’t know what Nia had gotten herself into, but it was clear that it was far more dangerous than she had imagined. And now, she had dragged Jack into it too.“I don’t have money,” Catherine said, her voice soft but determined. But I can help. If you let me find her, maybe I can bring her back to you. Mike’s eyes glinted with amusement. Bring her back to me? And what makes you think you can succeed where others have failed? “I’m her sister,” Catherine said, her voice fierce now. I know her. I know how she thinks. And if you give me a chance, I can find her before it’s too late.
Mike leaned back again, considering her words. The room was so quiet, Catherine could hear the steady thrum of her own pulse in her ears. She had no idea what Mike would say next, but she knew she had to keep pushing. Nia’s lNia depended on it.
After what felt like an eternity, Mike spoke again, his voice low and deliberate. Nia has something that belongs to me. If you can find her and bring it back, I’ll consider letting her walk free. But fail, and you won’t be the only one paying the price.
Catherine’s blood ran cold. The threat was clear. Mike wasn’t just holding Nia’s lNia in his hands he was holding hers too. “What does she have?” Jack asked, his voice tight with tension.
Mike smiled, but it was a cruel smile, one that sent a shiver down Catherine’s spine. That’s for me to know. You just worry about finding your sister. Catherine clenched her fists, biting back the urge to lash out. She couldn’t afford to let her emotions get the best of her now. Mike had agreed to let her search for Nia, and that was all that mattered.
I’ll find her,” she said, her voice steady. But if anything happens to her before I do
Mike cut her off with a sharp laugh. You’re in no position to make demands, little girl. I’ll give you 48 hours. After that, whatever happens to Nia is out of your hands. Catherine’s heart pounded. Two days. That was all the time she had to find her sister and take her back. The stakes couldn’t be higher.
Mike nodded to one of the men, and without another word, the guard stepped forward, opening the door for them to leave. Catherine glanced at Jack, who gave her a small, tight nod before they both stepped out of the room.
As they exited the club, the cool night air hit Catherine like a slap in the face. She hadn’t realized just how suffocating the atmosphere in Mike’s lair had been until she was free of it. But freedom was relative. She was still trapped in a web of lies and danger, and now, the clock was ticking. Jack walked beside her in silence for a few moments before he finally spoke. “That was… intense.”
Catherine nodded, her mind still spinning. I didn’t think it would be this bad. I knew Nia was in trouble, but this…
“We’ll figure it out,” Jack said, though his voice held little confidence. “But 48 hours… that’s not much time.”
“I know.” Catherine rubbed her temples, feeling the weight of the world pressing down on her. I don’t even know where to start. Nia could be anywhere.
“We’ll find her,” Jack said, his voice stronger now. We’ll start by retracing her steps, talking to people she was close to.
