Chapter 4

Agonizing pain and dizzying darkness from blood loss crashed over me like a tidal wave. When I lifted my gaze to Hunter, the world blurred at the edges. "My baby… my baby…" The sight of the bright red blood locked Hunter’s muscles rigid. Shock and raw panic flashed across his face for a split second. Instinct kicked in, and he bent forward, ready to scoop me into his arms. Just then, Aimee tugged gently at his arm. "Hunter, don’t panic. Heather already found out about us, right? She definitely planned this ahead of time." "This is probably just her acting like an injured victim to stall you so she can escape later…" Hunter froze mid-movement. When his eyes landed on me again, the warmth in them had turned to ice. He wrenched my hand off his pant leg and flung it away. "Heather, cut the act. Do you really think this performance will give you a chance to run? Dream on." He turned to the doctor, voice cold as a winter grave. "Continue. Make her forget everything she should not remember. Completely." The doctor nodded once. A surge of electricity wracked my body, leaving me convulsing so violently I could barely breathe, before dragging me back into endless darkness. Aemie stepped to Hunter’s side, slipping her arm through his. "Oh, by the way, Hunter, isn’t the Blackwood Group IPO celebration dinner in three days? So many important guests are coming… Heather is in no condition to attend." "Why don’t I go in her place? I’ll handle everything perfectly for you." Hunter glanced at me, pale and broken on the bed. His eyes flickered with something unreadable. In the end, he did not object. It was as good as approval. After that, he never answered a single one of my broken pleas and walked out with Aimee right on his heels. Three days later. Blackwood Group IPO Celebration Dinner. Every major figure in the business world arrived. If Hunter secured deals with a few top industry tycoons, the Blackwood family’s influence would soar overnight. But a few society wives who knew me whispered in confusion. "Where is Mrs. Blackwood tonight?" Hunter pulled Aimee closer to his side, one arm wrapped firmly around her waist. "My wife’s depression hasn’t improved. She needs complete rest." "I couldn’t bear to let her push herself. This is Aimee Vale, my childhood friend. She’s here tonight to help me handle socializing." A wave of praise followed immediately. "Mr. Blackwood is truly exceptional. He built this empire and still dotes on his wife so much." "I know, right? Mrs. Blackwood is so lucky." "If he treats his wife this well, he must be a reliable partner." Even the handful of tycoons Hunter had been courting for deals nodded and looked at him with obvious approval. The banquet reached its peak, and the contracts were about to be signed when a sharp voice suddenly cut through the hall. "Wait a minute." The entire room fell silent. "Can you really trust a man who let his nanny abort his wife’s baby three times, and locked his own wife in a psychiatric facility twice for illegal treatment? Can any of you trust him?"
