WANDERING

Chapter 4

Shekainah saw her life been miserable, she has lost everything just in one night.

Her father, best friend, pride as a woman and everything she has seen her parents worked hard for been in the possession of another woman she once called a mother in place of her mother.

She moved from one place to another looking for a job and a place to rest her head.

Wandering around the streets she came across a notice.

She dialed the number and fortunately for her she was given the direction to the location.

“Good day ma’am” she greeted when she arrived.

“What’s your name?”asked the woman

“My name is Shekainah,” she replied with a smile

“Are you sure you can do this job?” Asked the woman

“Yes ma’am ,” she replied

With a good look at Shekainah she agreed on giving her the opportunity.

“Thank you so much ma’am,” Shekainah knelt with tears.

Her actions were so pitiful.

“Let me know when you can start,”the woman said

“Today ma’am,” replied Shekainah

“Today? Are you sure?”the woman questioned.

“Yes ma’am! I’m ready,”Shekainah replied.

“Okay, you have to finish your chores before 9:00pm and come back at 7:00am in the morning,”the woman said.

Shekainah had a change of expression when she heard she had to leave and come back every morning.

“Are you okay?”asked the woman

“Please ma’am can I stay here with you for the mean time? I promise to leave when I get a place to stay after saving my salary to rent a room.” Shekainah pleaded

“Are you saying you don’t have a place to stay?”the woman questioned doubtfully.

“Hmmm… is a long story Ma’am. Please let me stay here if it involves you deducting it from my salary,” Shekainah insisted

“It’s fine… you can stay here, will give you a list of what you need to know as you stay in the house,” replied the woman

Thank you so much ma’am.

“One last thing,” the woman said as Shekainah was celebrating.

Shekainah cleared her throat thinking there was a change of plans somewhere.

“Stop calling me ma’am. Call me Mrs. Joan, while I call you Sheky for short,”

Sheky reminded her of Pearl, that was how she called her but that chapter of Pearl was on hold as she was going to do anything possible to make it in life and take revenge on the death of her father!

“Are you okay?” asked Mrs.Joan

“Yes Ma’am,”

Mrs. Joan gave her a side look

“ I mean Mrs. Joan,” Shekainah giggled.

Mrs. Joan stood up and took her to her room.

The room was no difference from where she was staying.

She sighed and smiled with tears filled in her eyes

“This will be your room for now, there are clothes in the wardrobe you can wear them,” Mrs. Joan said.

Shekainah wondered what clothes were doing in the closet

“The maid here left to her husband house,” Mrs. Joan explained.

“Aah okay….” Sheky nodded.

“Thank you so much Mrs. Joan, will change and get you something to eat as soon as possible,” Sheky giggled

“Don’t worry about that, I have ordered for food so rest for today,” Mrs. Joan was nice but one would judge otherwise of her when you see her for the first time.

She looked mean with a straight face one would wonder if she smiles at all.

TWO MONTHS LATER

Mrs. Joan was at the office when she heard her phone rang.

“I’m sorry will be with you shortly,” she excused herself from the meeting to answer the call.

“What!”she exclaimed and left the office in a hurry.

She got to the hospital in no time.

“Where’s the doctor?”she questioned the first nurse she came across.

She was directed to his office for enquires.

“I’m sorry Mrs. Joan, for calling you this hour”

“No problem, where is she and what happened?” Mrs. Joan asked curiously

“A lady was rushed here few minutes ago, we were told she collapsed at the mall when she was getting stuffs. We found this card in her bag and to my surprise it was your number,” the doctor explained.

“Yes she’s my maid,”Mrs. Joan replied

“Oh okay, sorry about that” the doctor apologized

“No problem, how is she?” Mrs. Joan asked

“Well, we have conducted some test on her and the results will be in soon please calm down,”

One nurse came in as the doctor ended is statement

“Here’s the result doc,” the nurse handed it over to him.

“Thank you,” he replied.

He cleared his throat as he read the result,

“Is everything alright?” Mrs. Joan questioned.

“Yes, everything is fine the issue here is that the lady, I mean you maid is two months pregnant!”the doctor announced.

“What?! With who?” Mrs. Joan exclaimed.

The doctor shook his head with no idea.

Mrs. Joan was quiet with tears flowing down her cheeks.

“Are you okay?” The doctor questioned.

“Is she okay? Can we go home?” Mrs. Joan asked sadly.

“Sure, let me call the nurses to discharge her,”

Mrs. Joan waited for Sheky in the car, Sheky had no idea what was going on.

Mrs. Joan’s reaction scared her a bit. She blamed herself for bringing Mrs. Joan to the hospital from work.

“I’m sorry ma’am, I will make sure I eat before stepping out next time,” Sheky apologized.

Mrs. Joan realized Sheky had no idea of what was happening.

“Please ma’am drop me at the station I would get a cab home so that you go back to work,”

Mrs. Joan turned deaf ear to everything Sheky was saying.

They finally got home.

Sheky passed by Mrs. Joan but was called back.

“Have this.” Mrs. Joan handed over the results to Sheky

“Should I keep it in your room?” Sheky questioned

Mrs. Joan glanced at her weirdly.

Sheky opened the envelope and read the results.

She dropped it and began breathing

“Is this mine?”she questioned Mrs. Joan.

“No! This can’t be! Not this time!” Sheky cried out.

Mrs. Joan left to her room, she couldn’t believe this. Sheky has been a good girl always indoors so how come she got pregnant?

This brought back memories to her, she knelt beside her bed and cried bitterly.

Sheky waited downstairs for Mrs. Joan to come down for her to apologize to her but she wasn’t.

Her stay here was over she admitted and went to the room to pack up her stuffs.

“Sheky! Sheky! Sheky!” Mrs. Joan yelled.

This was the moment Sheky has been waiting for to be thrown out of the house.

“Ma’am,” she responded and ran to the living room.

Mrs. Joan’s facial expression was scary it was obvious she was disappointed.

“Go in there pack your things and come out!”
