“Wow,” Nathan murmured under his breath. “You seem to be doing quite well for yourself, mom. Accepted just like that?” Grinning, Evelyn turned to him. There was a tired wrinkle at the corners of her eyes. “I just got lucky. What about you? What are you doing here?” Nathan glanced at his watch and then jumped—literally—away from his mother. “I’m almost out of time! I’ll get back to you, mom!” Evelyn watched as he ran up the stairs because the elevator seemed to be taking so much time. Nathan breathed heavily by the time he reached the third floor, where the hiring manager had asked to meet him.
