CHAPTER EIGHT — CHAOS IN THE SAFE ROOM

620 Words
The scream tore through the small room like glass shattering. My lungs burned as I stumbled backward, adrenaline pumping through every vein. My heart thudded painfully, echoing the chaos around me. Adrian was already moving a shadow of power and precision. He fired another shot. The sound was deafening in the confined space. Sparks of gunfire lit the room briefly, bouncing off the concrete walls. I pressed myself against the far corner, shaking, trying to make myself small. My bag clattered to the floor. The metallic taste of fear filled my mouth. “Stay down!” Adrian barked, his voice low but commanding. His eyes never left Victor or the men moving toward us. Victor stepped forward, almost leisurely, as if nothing about the gunfire or Adrian’s skill phased him. The two backup men flanked him, and their movements were synchronized, trained, precise. “Adrian,” I whispered, my voice trembling. “We what do we do?” He didn’t answer immediately. His mind was moving faster than mine could follow. Then he crouched slightly, still shielding me with his body. “We fight,” he said simply. The words were calm, but every muscle in his body screamed tension. I had never seen him like this. He wasn’t the composed, untouchable billionaire from dinner or the elevator. He was pure instinct and controlled rage. The first man lunged at him. Adrian’s hand moved faster than I could see, striking, disarming, and sending the man crashing against the wall. The second man swung toward me. I screamed, stumbling backward and Adrian was there. One arm around my waist, dragging me behind him, the other keeping the gun trained. Victor’s eyes glittered in the dim light. “Impressive,” he murmured, almost like he was enjoying a game. “But not enough.” Adrian swore, ducked, and fired. The bullets hit with precision. The two backup men were down but Victor was still standing, calm, untouchable. I could feel the sweat running down my back, my chest heaving. Adrian’s arm tightened around me. “Stay with me, Aurora. Do not move.” Victor tilted his head, smiling slightly. “You can’t hide forever, Adrian. And you can’t protect her forever either.” Adrian’s jaw tightened. He didn’t answer. His gaze never left Victor, calculating, waiting, predicting. Then Victor did something unexpected he lunged, fast, faster than the two men before him. But Adrian was faster. They collided in a blur of movement. Fists, elbows, and sheer force clashing in a way that left me frozen in shock. I gripped the edge of the couch so tightly my knuckles went white. Every second felt like hours. And then Victor staggered back, smirking, wiping a trickle of blood from his lip. “Not bad, Adrian. Not bad at all.” Adrian’s breathing was controlled, but I could see the tension in his shoulders, the taut line of his jaw. “This ends tonight,” he said, voice low and deadly. Victor laughed softly. “Oh, I think it’s only beginning.” Suddenly, another shadow moved across the doorway. I barely had time to register it before Adrian shoved me behind the couch. A sharp metallic scrape echoed another intruder? Adrian’s eyes locked with mine. “Aurora,” he said firmly, “no matter what happens… you do exactly as I say. Do you understand?” I nodded quickly, unable to speak. He pulled me close, whispering urgently, “Trust me. That’s the only way you survive this.” Victor’s laughter floated through the room again, low and menacing, echoing off the walls. “Trust? Oh, Adrian… that’s where the fun begins.” And just like that, the safe room felt anything but safe.
