Chapter VI

Fae’s POV His scent surrounding me was incredible. I deepened the kiss, inviting him into my mouth, moaning. Adeline was purring in the back of my head. My arms went around his neck, holding him to me. I felt tingles all over as his hand slid up my freshly shaved leg. His hand slipped up my shirt, skimming up my side before cupping my breast. His thumb flicking across my erect n****e. My nails dug into his shoulder. I had never felt anything like this before. My legs wrapped around him, desperate for more of this feeling. His hardened length pushed against my core and it was like a bucket of cold water was poured on me. “Wait! No!” I started pushing him. “Stop!” He quickly jumped off of me, leaning back catching his breath. “Are you okay?” He looked really concerned. A part of me was embarrassed about panicking like that. It’s not like I really thought he would hurt me. I don’t think. “I’m sorry. I’m sorry. I just...” my adrenaline was pumping as I struggled with my fight or flight response. “No. No, it’s okay. You don’t have to apologize.” He was holding his hands up in surrender. “Are you okay?” I nod. “Yeah." "Fae, was that a scar I felt on your side? What happened to you? "Oh, that scar is no big deal." I shrugged. "It happened a few years ago. Sorry. Guess I’m just…jumpy.” He looked deep in my eyes almost like he heard more than I was saying. “Alright. Well, we have all the time in the world for you to get comfortable with me.” “Oh, do we?” I couldn’t help the slight smile on my face. He slowly reached out, watching my face, I’m guessing gauging my reaction, and he took my cheek in his hand. I found myself leaning into his touch. “The rest of my life.” He held my eyes for a minute and then suddenly hopped up in one motion, bouncing on the balls of his feet. “Well, alright then. Let’s go start your tour.” It took me a second to shift gears but once I did, I looked down at the tank top that hung low, clearly showing one of my erect n*****s and the oddly fitting shorts. “Uh, Lycus, I don’t know if this is the best way to meet your pack.” “Oh." he scratched his head. "Right. No worries I’m on it.” His eyes glazed and then he flopped back onto the bed picking up 1984. “So, explain this damn book to me.” “Wait, what?” I was confused. “My mom will bring you something to wear and, in the meantime, you can help me understand how a whole nation didn’t notice their history being changed.” “Some did.” I was immediately distracted from embarrassment over borrowing clothes by the chance to discuss my favorite book. “And I’m sure many more questioned things in their head, but the fear over their punishment was huge. If they asked the wrong question or even mentioned something they had observed, they could be taken. Just disappear. And no one would ever know what happened to them. Even worse though, the people who had cared about them wouldn’t even ask what had happened to them. Instead, it would have been like they had never existed. The fear of not being remembered. The fear of the unknown. Yes, perhaps their current situation was awful, but what if it could get worse?” He was nodding as I spoke with passion. We spent the next twenty minutes discussing the book, flipping to different parts and debating the likelihood of that sort of thing happening. I had an interesting perspective as I had personally witnessed a massive social shift in my own pack. I may have been young when it started but it had still left an impression. We were deep in our conversation when there was a knock on the door. Lycus seemed kind of disappointed by the interruption, but he hopped up and went to open his door for his mother, who entered with a bag hanging from her arm. “Hello Fae, dear.” She greeted me in the most mothering way I had heard in a long time. “Hi Luna Nowling”. I scrambled off the bed, fidgeting with my oversized clothes. “Oh dear, please. Just call me Jessie.” She smiled walking towards me. “I am so grateful to you. I spoke with Rica in more detail, and I understand what you saved her from.” She pulled me into a hug. I couldn’t resist enjoying the feel of a mother figure's arms around me. I hadn’t felt that in a very long time. “I’m just glad I was still close by. I had been heading out when she screamed.” I saw fear cross her face. Probably imagining what might have happened if I hadn’t heard Rica. She cleared her throat. “Well, ugh, I brought you some clothes.” She handed me the bag. “Thank you so much for this. I really appreciate it. If you wouldn’t mind telling me where I can wash my clothes, I will be able to get these back to you in a few hours.” “Oh, dear, there’s no need to hurry. If you just toss your clothes in the hamper, one of our Omegas will be happy to take care of them for you and you’ll have them back tomorrow.” “No,” I only owned three outfits. That was all I had to my name. The idea of letting them out of my sight was terrifying. “No, thank you. I would prefer to wash them myself if you don’t mind.” Jessie looked at me for a long moment like she was trying to really understand, rather than just dismissing my wishes. “You want to stay with your things, don’t you?” Her voice didn’t seem accusatory. Instead, there was understanding on her face. “Yes,” I said in a small voice. Lycus reached over, taking my hand. “You can trust the people here, Fae.” Lycus attempted to reassure me, but his mother simply raised her hand, stopping him. “Don’t tell her that, Lycus.” I looked at her in surprise. So, I can’t trust them? That was my first thought, but then I really looked at her. That’s not what she was trying to say. “You know I wasn’t raised in a pack, right?” I nodded. “Rica mentioned you were human.” Jessie smiled at that. “Yes, she does love reminding people. Well, let’s just say my husband was…excited when he found his mate. My introduction to a pack was…unexpected to say the least. Someday I will tell you the whole story, but for now let’s just say I understand not wanting to lose sight of your few things.” I nodded, really feeling like she did understand. I like her. Me too. Her hand reached out and she touched my cheek. “Lycus will show you to the laundry and you are welcome to use anything you would like. No one will limit your access to your things.” I felt tears come to my eyes. I really had been scared of what would happen now that I was mated to a freaking future Alpha. “Well, I’ll leave you to get settled.” She kissed my cheek and turned to leave the room. “Oh,” she paused halfway to the door. “And if Lycus can’t find the laundry let me know and I’ll show you the way.” I giggled. “I know where the laundry is Mom!” Lycus announced loudly. “Really? Huh, you could have fooled me.” She looked at me. “He’s certainly never DONE laundry in his whole life.” I genuinely laughed at that comment. “Mom.” “Yes, sweetheart.” “Get out.” She laughed as she stepped out of the room. “How about you go get dressed and we can go on a tour.” “Oh, so you really don’t know where the laundry room is, do you?” I teased. He growled as I ran to the bathroom to change. Lycus’ POV I smiled at my adorable mate dashing to the bathroom in my clothes. If it were up to me, she would never wear anything else. Just keep her right here in my room in my clothes…or naked. Naked would be good. I don’t know about that. Why do you say that? You saw her reaction when you touched her. Yes. She was loving it up until.. You touched between her legs. Yeah. Up till then Do you think something might have happened to her out there? I’m sure a lot of things happened to her. Yes. But the kind of thing that might prevent her from wanting more from us. I was really angry, even thinking something like that might have happened to my mate. Look. All we can do is prove to her that she can trust us. Eventually, she’ll be able to let her guard down with us. I could feel Baron echoing my hope. We really wanted our mate, but more than anything, we wanted her to love and trust us. We wanted her to feel completely safe. We’d wait however long she needed for that. Shaking off my worry, I grabbed my book and flopped on the couch unsure of how long she would be. I had barely cracked open the book when the bathroom door opened. I jumped up, turning to face her and started laughing. She crossed her arms, giving me an angry look. “I’m sorry!” I held up my hand, trying to control my humor at that moment. “Very funny. Come on! It’s not THAT bad!” She waved an arm and the sleeve of my mother's sweater fell off her shoulder. The shirt hung to her mid-thigh, her jeans were baggy. “Please, raise the shirt and turn around for me.” She rolled her eyes but humored me, raising the sweater and turning in a slow circle. The butt of the jeans looked like someone had moved out of them. “Well, technically it’s all staying on.” I laughed. “Yeah! Because of this.” She raised the sweater more, showing off the belt. I laughed harder. I guess there hadn’t been a tight enough hole, so she had just tied the belt in the front. “Shut up!” “I’m sorry! Clearly, my mom has had five pups.” I couldn’t stop laughing. “I promise we can go get you some clothes tomorrow. We just need you clothed till then.” “Tomorrow?” “Well, yeah. It’s getting kind of late today and I was going to show you around the house, so you won’t get lost or anything. We’ll tackle the rest of the pack lands over the next few days. You know, after you have some clothes.” “So, I’m going to be staying here tonight?” She looked around my room like she was on an alien planet. That question had both me and Baron at attention. “Well, yes. Of course, you are staying here. I mean I can get you your own room if you really want, but…” “So, I’m not going back to the forest?” Why did she sound so confused about that? “Are you asking if I am going to stay here while my mate goes back to living alone, sleeping on the ground and constantly at risk of who knows what kind of dangers out there?” “I know what kinds of dangers…” I cut that comment off real quick. “That doesn’t make me feel better, Fae. No, no, you are not going back to the forest. I meant it when I said the rest of my life. We can take all the time you need to feel comfortable, but you are staying here. I am not living apart from my mate.” “Alright.” That was all. She just said alright. “Alright…so ugh…I’m thinking you should wear mom's pants but one of my shirts.” I walked through my bathroom, into my closet, opened a drawer, and pulling out a black t-shirt. Fae had followed right behind me. "This shouldn't fall off your shoulders and you can tie it up or something to keep it from looking like a dress." “Thanks.” She turned her back to me and pulled the sweater off, trying to quickly switch shirts. I was frozen as I looked at my mate’s naked back, but instead of excitement I felt horror, anger, sympathy, just a huge flood of emotions. It seemed the scar on her side wasn’t her only scar. “Ugh…Fae?” “Yeah?” She turned to face me as she adjusted my shirt, bunching it at her hip. “Your back…” “What about it?” Her head tilted. “You…you have scars.” I saw a shadow cross her face and then she quickly shook it away. “Well, I guess you see why I draw so much from 1984. This is the kind of thing that happens when you question pack life too aggressively.” “Not here! I would never allow anyone in my pack to be treated like that.” I waved my hand indicating the scars that clearly came from some kind of switch or maybe a whip. “I hope that’s true.” was all she said as she slipped her backpack on and started toward the door. “You don’t have to bring that. You can leave it here.” “No, I’m good.” I wanted to object but I remembered what my mother had said and simply walked out of the room, closing it behind us.
