I barely slept after leaving my father’s office.
Adrian Cole’s words kept repeating in my head.
“If you really want the truth about your parents, then stop trusting Zack Alexander.”
I wanted to believe him.
But I couldn’t.
Not completely.
There was something about Adrian that made me uneasy.
He knew too much.
He knew my parents.
He knew Zack.
And most importantly, he knew what happened the night my parents died.
The next morning, I arrived at Alexander Tower earlier than usual.
I expected Zack to be angry about my decision to meet Adrian.
Instead, his office was empty.
His assistant looked up when I entered.
“Mr. Alexander isn’t here yet.”
I nodded.
“Did he say when he would return?”
“No.”
I walked back toward my desk.
Something didn’t feel right.
Zack never left without telling anyone where he was going.
I sat down and opened my laptop.
I tried to focus on work, but I couldn’t stop thinking about the private files I had seen the day before.
There had to be more.
Something Zack wasn’t showing me.
I waited until the office became quiet.
Then I stood up.
I walked toward Zack’s office.
The door was unlocked.
I stepped inside.
His desk was perfectly organized.
Everything had its place.
I searched through the drawers but found nothing unusual.
Then I noticed a small cabinet near the bookshelf.
It was locked.
I remembered seeing Zack use a key from his watch chain.
I searched the desk again.
Nothing.
Then I noticed a small black box behind a row of books.
I pulled it out.
There was a key inside.
My heart started beating faster.
I took the key to the cabinet.
It fit.
The lock clicked.
Inside were several folders.
Most were marked with company names.
One folder had no name.
Only a date.
Six months ago.
I pulled it out.
My hands were shaking as I opened it.
The first page was a photograph.
My father.
Standing beside Zack’s father.
The same photograph I had seen in the private building.
I turned the page.
There were several documents.
Then I saw something that made my blood run cold.
A photograph of my parents taken two days before their deaths.
They were standing outside a restaurant.
Someone had been following them.
I turned another page.
There was a report.
My father’s name was at the top.
I started reading.
Then I heard the office door open.
I froze.
Footsteps approached.
I quickly placed the papers back into the folder.
But it was too late.
Zack appeared in the doorway.
His eyes immediately went to the open cabinet.
Then to the folder in my hands.
Neither of us spoke.
He closed the door behind him.
“What are you doing?”
I couldn’t lie.
Not this time.
“Looking for answers.”
His expression hardened.
