31 The worm in the cave
The mule was laden with the provisions and bags for the journey, and also with Vijaya, a huge and beautifully made bow belonging to the rishi. Next to this bow Karna had fixed his own red sack. When he saw this the rishi scowled, but he did not say anything.
‘Rama, why do we have to travel so far, just so that I can learn how to use this metal bow?’
‘I want some time alone with you,’ was all the rishi had to reply.
Beyond the training area of the brahmanas the track began to climb up again, winding between the foothills which buttressed the west side of the mountain.
Parashu, wearing his blue cloak, walked steadily in front, pacing with his axe. Behind him followed the mule; and then Karna, with a bow perched over his bearskin.
