CHAPTER 2: LAURA’S STARTS INVESTIGATING Reign with no second thought, jumped off the balcony falling in the neighbour’s compound. The gunman fired but he had run out of bullets. The gun man knew he didn’t have much time left so he quickly run out. Laura ley there with no movements. She could feel the warm, sticky blood seeping through her fingers, and she knew she had to get to Reign, to protect him at all costs. Summoning the last of her strength, she dragged herself forward. Her vision blurring with each agonizing movement. “Reign,” she whispered hoarsely, “hide. Keep quiet, and don’t come out, no matter what you hear.” The sound of the intruder’s fast approaching footsteps filled the air. Laura knew she was running out of time, but she had to act quickly. She played dead, forcing her body to go limp as the looming figure of the killer came into view. The intruder paused at the doorway, his gun still raised as he peered cautiously outside. Laura held her breath, praying that her ruse would work. Suddenly, with a burst of adrenaline-fueled strength, Laura grabbed the nearest object, a sturdy wooden stool and swung it with all her might, slamming it into the side of the intruder’s head. The man let out a startled cry as he crumpled to the floor, his gun clattering to the ground. “Who sent you to kill my parents?” Laura yelled, her voice laced with fury. She collapsed lying next to her parents. The commotion had drawn the attention of the neighbours, who were now gathering outside. Seeing his partner incapacitated and the crowd quickly approaching, the second intruder made a split-second decision. His attempt to shoot Laura wasn’t fruitful as Laura locked the door. Without hesitation, he raised his own weapon and fired a single shot, striking his fallen comrade. “Sorry man, I’m left with no choice.” He said to his fellow goon he had just shot. The crowd scattered in terror as the gunman turned and fled, sprinting towards a waiting van that had no visible license plate. People watched in stunned silence as the van sped away. They were horrified. Laura had acted, against all odds, and managed to thwart the intruders, but at what cost? One of them lay dead at their doorway. Reign emerged from his limping, his eyes wide with fear and confusion. “Laura?” he whispered, his voice trembling. He pulled his sister's head into a tight embrace, anguish flooding through him “I’ll always be there for you, Reign,” she murmured, her fingers trembling as she stroked his hair. “You’re safe now. We’re safe.” she whispered her eyelids struggling to remain open. Finally her body gave in as she lost consciousness in her brother's small arms. One man ran forward carrying Laura as a female neighbour held uncontrollably wheeping Reign. But as the sound of approaching sirens filled the air, Reign turned and looked ay his parents. He couldn’t shake the overwhelming sense of fear and pain that settled in the pit of his stomach. The nightmare was far from over. Days moved on so fast, turning into months, as the siblings learned to depend on each other. Laura and her brother had started to cope with this new, cruel reality as orphans. Every single day, Laura woke up and started going through her dad’s belongings, searching for anything that could give her a lead on her parents’ murder case. She carefully took pictures and videos, storing them on her email, determined to uncover the truth. Her dad had just bought a new phone a few weeks before he was killed. Laura made sure to secure his old device, intentionally withholding it from the police. She didn’t trust them to handle the investigation properly. She didn't like how the whole thing was handled. Dissatisfied with the way her parents’ murder case was being handled, Laura decided to start her own investigation, running it parallel to the police’s efforts. On several occasions, she visited her dad’s office, interacting with the employees and asking seemingly innocent, even “stupid” questions, but L
