Chapter 2: Future Luna

1548 Words
Mona's POV Once again, I arrived at the packhouse in Beta's car, dressed in my usual white shirt and gray plaid skirt—a modest outfit. Clutching the straps of my bag, I entered the dining hall with a different kind of nervousness than before. While I've been to this place before, it's the first time I've come alone on a date with someone of the opposite s*x. Is this even a date? I ask myself, then dismiss the idea. Maybe he just misses his former neighbors and wants to meet up to reminisce about the past. When I was a child, I really liked this gentle, handsome boy and would say childish things like wanting to be his bride when I grew up. But since he left the pack and lost contact, my youthful impression of him has faded away. Remembering my own childish thoughts now, I feel a sense of shyness and embarrassment. At the table, the way I formally use my knife and fork makes him chuckle softly. "Don't be nervous, puppy," he says. "Remember how we used to get along when we were kids?" A slight heat rises to my cheeks, and I can't help but retort, "But we're not kids anymore. You're our future alpha." Felix took the plate in front of me, naturally cutting the steak and potatoes into small pieces and placing them in front of me, just as he used to do when we were children. Taking care of me, without fail. "You're right," Felix agreed sincerely. "I'm going to be responsible for protecting and developing our pack in the future, and I'll need a Luna by my side to help me, don't you think?" "Luna?" Why is he asking for my opinion? I ponder silently. I'm not the daughter of a distinguished Alpha from another pack. I'm just a normal high school student without a wolf. Perhaps sensing that he doesn't get an immediate response, Felix adds casually, "I've been watching you. You're an excellent student in school and a great student president." "But..." I'm momentarily speechless as I think of my flaw. Resting his chin on his crossed hands, he looked at me seriously. "I'm sure that when your wolf shows up, you'll be a better warrior than your parents." Turns out, he already knew! My mood immediately sinks into the depths of despair, even though it's not exactly a secret at school. I haven't gotten my wolf yet, even at the age of 16. It's one of the most frustrating and inferior things I've experienced so far. Members of my pack usually shift into their wolf form at the age of thirteen or fourteen. While I've anxiously prayed and waited for this day, I've listened countless times to others sharing their experiences and feelings about shifting into a wolf. But I've never felt the call of the wolf deep within my body myself. Becoming a powerful warrior like my parents or taking practical combat courses offered by the school seems like an unattainable aspiration for me. My parents are high-ranking warriors in the pack, and their wolf forms are massive and powerful. When I was a child, I would ride on the back of my father or mother, holding onto their necks, burying my face in their thick gray fur. The sound of the wind whistling in my ears and the feel of leaves brushing against my back are vivid memories. I always aspired to be like them, shifting into a wolf form and running freely in the moonlight. Although I don't show it, deep down inside, I'm afraid that I'm a disabled waste who can't shift into a wolf for life. I fear that I'll shame my parents, be discriminated against by teachers and classmates, and be abandoned by my pack. So I've put in the effort several times, achieved top grades in regular subjects and humanoid combat courses, and done my best to demonstrate and prove my abilities. I've helped others as much as I could and successfully ran for the position of student president. But as the student president, if I can't even transform into a wolf, it's hard to convince everyone. Some students who look down on me mock me behind my back for being disabled. And there are those who go too far, turning into their wolf forms and attacking me when I'm alone. They strike inconspicuous places on my body, leaving no evidence for me to file a complaint. "Be patient," my parents always reassured me, "You're the child of wolves!" They told me that in the history of the Werewolf Continent, there were late-blooming werewolves who became heroes with exceptional intelligence, strength, or other valuable abilities. "Wolf or no wolf, you're still our baby." Will the late bloomers produce beautiful flowers, or will they silently fade away? I'm still confused. "Do you really believe in me?" "I know the real you." Felix flashed his familiar smile again. From that day on, Beta David and the Alpha's exclusive black limousine show up at school every day at noon sharp. At first, I obediently accepted the invitation to go there. Felix engages in ordinary conversations with me, telling stories about the outside world, the pack's situation, personal experiences, and more. He answers my academic questions like a tutor, without any ambiguous or flirtatious words or frivolous behavior. He's a perfect gentleman, and the dining experience is quite enjoyable. But as more people on campus witness me getting into the Alpha's limousine, gossip about Felix and me starts spreading around. Walking around campus, you can't help but overhear certain cliques whispering: "Felix is our FUTURE ALPHA. Is she his MATE?" "How can that be? Isn't he engaged to the beta's sister?" "No matter how good she is, she has no wolf!" ... Whenever we encounter students badmouthing me or playing tricks behind my back, Clare and Otto walk by them with big grins and loudly question, "Is there anything you can't say to my face?" Since the three of us are not to be messed with, these students usually back off and leave resentfully on the surface. Of course, behind my back, they spread twisted facts, making it impossible for me to ignore them. "Just enjoy your time and ignore these jealous people," Clare pats me on the shoulder and winks, "There's nothing more romantic than a childhood sweetheart reunion." "I've said it multiple times, this isn't a date." I sighed helplessly and explained, "We just had a normal lunch." "Just lunch?" Otto gave me a skeptical look, so annoyed that I reached out and playfully pretended to hit him. "You're just a brat who doesn't know anything!" "You're the nerd who doesn't understand love!" Watching the two of us bicker like children, Clare simply giggles from the sidelines. Upon seeing Beta David waiting there today, as always, I didn't know whether to thank Felix for his preference or protest his arbitrary decisions. To prevent these rumors from spreading throughout the pack and worrying about being interrogated by my parents and friends, I politely suggested to Felix at the dining table, "Actually, it's unnecessary for Beta to pick me up every day. I'm just an ordinary student and should be staying on campus, hanging out with my classmates." Felix, however, remains neutral, setting down his knife and fork and looking at me with affectionate eyes, as if I were a misbehaving child. "We can take our time, it doesn't need to progress too quickly. But we should spend more time together getting know each other better," he says without hesitation. "Together?" I never have the courage to ask the question in my heart— What exactly is our relationship? Before I could clarify my vague feelings, a woman we didn't expect gracefully entered the dining hall, "Darling, there you are." She's got this pure and stunning look that's just adorable. Rocking a long white halter dress and some killer pointy high heels that accentuate her figure, she catches everyone's eye with her red curly hair lazily cascading over her shoulders. And let's not forget that sparkling diamond necklace adorning her slender neck. Her sharp eyes scan between us as she speaks. "Mable, I'm entertaining my guest, so please excuse yourself," Felix said, his expression turning a bit colder. As soon as I hear her name, I figure out that she must be beta David's sister—the rumored betrothed of Felix, whose family also lives in the packhouse. "Don't be mad!" she sweetly smiles and pouts. "I came all the way here to say hi to this little guest." "You're Mona, right? I've heard about you," Mable naturally stroked the hottest pose and reached out to put her hand on my shoulder. "Felix's guest is my guest, and I'll make sure the cooks and servants treat you well," she leans down and affectionately tells me, "Feel free to come as a guest anytime." However, the hand on my shoulder tightens its grip, its sharp nails subtly pinching the skin beneath my clothes, causing a dull ache. "Thanks..." I managed to force out a polite smile. I can see the triumphant smile on Mable's face, revealing her dominance as the future Luna. My heart sinks like a stone to the depths of the sea.
