Loud banging echoed inside of a testing ground. A sharp yet high pitched squealing resonated under the bright florescent lights. A young girl, roughly in her teens, was nearly losing her temper. She cannot seemed to make her inventions work, despite hours of fixing and analyzing. She threw the pliers on the ground, creating a loud thump as it touched the floor. The little scientist snarled,
"Why it isn't functioning?!"
She yanked herself on her desk chair, the tiny wheels squeaked when it collided with the ceramic tiles. She rubbed her forehead in disappointment, as it felt like she had a horrible tension headache.
"It's been two years since I successfully made it work, but why I can't do it again?!" the scientist hissed, questioning herself.
The young girl slammed her fist against the table. Her eyes narrowed and her eyebrows furrowed. She is a prodigy yet with a snarky and short-tempered attitude. A half-human blood flows through her veins, and the other half comes from a magical entity. Despite having a blood of a mage, her magical powers isn't that great and is limited. Although with this, she has an enhanced five senses, making her above of an ordinary human.
The scientist was all alone inside her average laboratory. It served as her home as well. It was divided into two segments. One for her testing ground and the other one for housing. She was silent for a moment. Her head was resting on her intertwined hands, completely exhausted. She discontinued her work, although temporarily. For the meantime, she decided to take a break. Her loud breathing can be heard synchronizing with the laboratory's ventilation sounds. Not long, a ceaseless piercing banging of door made the nerd flinched. She almost fell from her chair. The girl moved along and checked the security camera to know who decided to break the silence she's savoring. She flounced her way through the door and opened it. Two joyful creatures greeted the young scientist. They are about the same age as the nerdy girl. One was a red haired girl, she has an abundant amount of freckles on her face. Her slender hand waved energetically. And a wide smile bonded on her face. The other one was an attractive young lad with pink hair and pointy ears. A Flauraescan and Hexalluran. He waved his hand slightly. Immediately he transferred his attention to his ice cream, which was he's too busy to lick at.
"Ronnie! Hi there!" said by the red haired girl.
"Yo." the lad added and continued eating his ice cream cone.
"Poppy? Jay? What are you two doing here?!" Ronnie reacted furiously, raising an eyebrow.
"Uhm, hello? It's not like we're aren't always here." Poppy sassed, flicking her wrist.
"Gagh! I know," Ronnie groaned. She closed her eyes, frowned, and pinched the bridge of her nose. Showing an irritated look. "But I told you two to not disturb me during this day!" she explained in a higher tone.
"Woops! Really?" Poppy replied, playing dumb. She yanked Ronnie away and passed the scientist. Jay casually followed the red haired girl inside. "I can't remember you said that?" she continued, putting her hands in her waist.
"Hey! I didn't tell you two to enter my lab! Go away, now!" Ronnie hissed. She pointed her index finger to the doorway. Ordering the two pests to leave her home.
"Relax, Ronnie. Geez! Why you are so grumpy?" Poppy complained.
"Because you're bothering me! I told you to leave me alone!" the scientist growled. She clenched her teeth while her eyebrows quivered and furrowed.
Her two visitors went silent for a brief moment. They saw how their geeky friend reacted to their supposedly nice surprise visit. It was poorly and cannot be managed easily. Poppy stared at her furious friend. Then, she blinked her eyes slowly, and breathed out. Jay, on the other hand, was waiting for the red haired girl's response
"Alright, we'll leave you alone, but first, you have to listen to what we're going to say." Poppy calmly explained.
"Make it quick." Ronnie's quick and firm response.
Poppy sighed. She composed herself and made an eye contact to Ronnie. She crossed her arms.
"Today is the Sandertown's foundation day. A fest will be held at the plaza. We came here because we thought-"
"I am not attending the fest, okay? I can't believe you bothered me just for some stupid occasion!" Ronnie interjected.
Poppy startled by what she said. Her lips curled. She raised an eyebrow to her friend. Multiple needles punctured her mind. She felt offended by her words.
"Hey! How dare you call it 'stupid'?! It's a very important occasion! You are a resident of this town. At least show some respect!" Poppy retorted, her eyebrows met.
"Well, I don't want to get included with some stupid and ugly event with tons of human-hating species." Ronnie explained.
Poppy's hair darkened. Like every Flauraescan, her emotions reflected on her hair and skin. She grew small flowers but it was dark, displaying her anger.
"Is this about the bad history of humans again? Stop generalizing people. Not all of them are loathing humans!" she paused and recoiled, "Not all of us..." she followed in a soft tone.
"Why don't you go out and see for yourself?" Poppy followed with a strong voice.
"Easy for you to say. You don't understand because you don't have a human blood with you." said Ronnie with a furious look on her face.
Poppy remained silent. She believed Ronnie has a good point. Although, she knew that she's making sense as well. With the world constantly changing, humans gradually accepted by different creatures.
Jay darted his eyes to both of his friends who's igniting a fire. He felt the tension inside the laboratory. This isn't the first time Poppy and Ronnie fought. Although, Jay knew that he needed to do something before it gets worse.
He stepped forward and patted Poppy on her back. The red haired girl jolted. She looked back and saw the lad's worried face.
Poppy turned her sight back to Ronnie. She also felt the tension becoming hotter. She doesn't want to add fuel on the fire anymore. When in the first place, their visit was supposed to be warm and welcoming rather than a raging fire in a pot. She breathed in and out. Poppy rolled her eyes and flipped her red hair. She walked away passing the scientist. Jay just tailed after her friend. They reached the doorway, however, Poppy doesn't want the situation end just like that. She turned around and looked at her half-human friend.
"I know you don't want us to be here at the moment... But we'll be back again later on. And I just hope at that time, you're ready to talk with us again with a clear sight and mind." Poppy spoke in a placid yet comforting tone.
Ronnie didn't respond and avoided eye contact. The two exited and completely left the space. Ronnie slammed the door closed. She goes back to her chair and sat. She buried her hands through her hair and thought about what Poppy said. Ronnie blankly stared in air and chose to be quiet.
"I guess...I acted too bitter with them, huh?" she mumbled.
Ronnie bowed her head and faced table. She felt her eyes becoming heavy. Not long, the scientist fell asleep on her desk.
