Eve “Eve!” Mia hissed beside me, leaning in close enough that only I could hear, her teeth gritted behind a forced smile. “What the f**k are you doing? Sign those papers already.” I swallowed, the pen still trembling in my hand. “I can’t… I don’t think I can anymore,” I whispered back, my voice barely holding together. Mia’s eyes widened, shock flashing across her face before she masked it. “Why? What’s going on?” I just sighed, staring at the blank signature line like it might swallow me whole. The lead lawyer cleared his throat politely. “Is there a problem we can address?” Mia let out a nervous chuckle, squeezing my hand under the table, hard. “We’re so sorry. Just… give us one minute, please.” She stood, tugging me up with her, and practically dragged me out of the living room.
