I tightened my coat, quickening my pace as the air grew colder as fall gave way to winter. People who had just come out of the subway station were walking quickly to catch the time to their respective offices, just like me. I smiled a little at being in the crowd before working on a tiring routine, but gave me satisfaction. It's been a long time since I've felt this kind of freedom.
Suddenly beside the sidewalk where I was walking, a pink car pulled up. At first, I continued walking, but I turned my head when I heard my name being called. And inside the car was Nicole, who was sitting in the driving seat, looking at me with a dismissive gaze.
"Oh my, are you really going to work on foot?" Nicole asked.
I rolled my eyes while exhaling a rough breath from my mouth, then continued on my way. She
"You're ignoring me?" yelled Nicole, sounding completely shocked. "I know I sound a little arrogant to you, but that's normal because I'm rich and deserve to be arrogant. But a poor person like you doesn't deserve to ignore me."
I decided to stop, turning to Nicole with my arms folded in front of my chest. "Yes, yes, you're the richest person in the world. I already know, so stop interrupting my walk. I will need a considerable amount of time to reach the office, as you can see that I am only walking. This poor woman begs for your understanding."
Nicole laughed contentedly after hearing me groveling in front of her. Looking at her validation-seeking behavior, I had even more doubts about her wealth. Or she could be a nouveau riche, just like Sebastien, who was shocked after seeing a lot of money because he was not used to it.
"Alright, have a safe trip Chloe 'poor' Riette," Nicole said as she drove the car away from me.
Damn, once I have to deal with a narcissistic person like Nicole. I'll make sure she drops her java when she finds out my identity. Not anytime soon, but I can't wait to see her reaction, is she still showing her disgusting arrogance?
After walking for about fifteen minutes, I arrived at the office, hoping that today wouldn't be as annoying as yesterday. However, of course, it was just an empty hope because it was still morning, and I had to deal with three bullies who seemed to be very itchy if they didn't bother me for a second.
"So, has that report I gave you yesterday been completed?" Maria inquired.
I blinked my eyes, pretending innocence. "Didn't I send it via email last night?"
"No, there's still one report that you were supposed to give me a soft copy of this morning," Maria argued.
I raised one eyebrow as if I was thinking, then I nodded slowly. "Oh, you mean that report that Nicole was supposed to do, huh? Of course, I didn't do it because it's not my job desk."
Maria's eyes widened to look at me. "Didn't I make it clear yesterday that you should be working on it too?!"
I shrugged my shoulders. "Just because you told me to doesn't mean I have to do it. The report was given to Nicole by the manager, it's too much for me to take someone else's job. That's very unfair to Nicole. As trainees, we have to show our performance to be considered permanent employees, don't you think?"
"You dare to contradict me, even though you are a trainee who has only worked here for two years. I am your direct superior, do not you know that? For all you know, with just one sentence from me, you could be fired from this company." Maria threatened me.
She must have thought that such a cheap threat could sway me. Whereas I only needed one word to fire her from this company. I put on a flat face, showing that her threat did not affect me whatsoever.
"I'm not arguing, I'm just telling the truth. I'm sorry if I made you feel that way. I believe in the integrity of this company, that's why I work here. My job is my job, I won't delegate my responsibilities to others. And vice versa, I shouldn't take on the responsibilities of others. I'm sure you understand what I mean."
"What an insolent subordinate. See what I can do."
Maria turned away from me, I could feel the piercing stares of Leona and Nicole.
I could also hear Leona quipping to Nicole, "That new kid would surely bow at your feet if he knew your true identity."
Nicole replied, "Yes, of course. I won't let her go. My grandfather would not stay silent if he knew that his favorite granddaughter was insulted by a lowly employee."
I stretched my arms before sitting down and continuing my work, paying no attention to those annoying people. They thought my grandfather would also stay silent if he knew an employee was bullying another employee like them.
For a while, I worked well. I ate lunch at the company cafeteria solemnly, until I was asked to meet the marketing manager for no reason. Feeling like I hadn't made any trouble, I walked into the manager's office with a relaxed face and smiled kindly at the man who somehow seemed annoyed.
"During the day, sir," I greeted.
"Do you know what you did wrong?"
The manager's question puzzled me. "I'm sorry, sir, is it possible that some of my work is wrong?"
"You're wrong and we don't even realize your own mistakes? You're still a trainee and have only been working for two days, but you've already organized the work given to you by your superiors? And now you're pretending not to know?"
I paused for a moment remembering the three annoying people who always bothered me. My summoning now was definitely because of them. "Excuse me, sir, if you mean the report you asked Nicole for, then it's not my fault. I was asked by Maria to do it, but since it was Nicole's job, I didn't do it."
"Maria told me herself that it was you who insisted on exchanging assignments with Nicole. Nicole's work given by Maria was completed on time, but you didn't do my report at all."
I wanted to open my mouth to explain the truth, but it was useless because the manager would still believe Maria's words more than me who was only a trainee. "I apologize, sir. I won't do it again."
"Work on that report and give it to me in an hour!"
I bowed as I replied, "Yes, sir."
Mr. Manager shooed me out of there with the code of hands shaking in the air, and then he said, "This employee doesn't deserve to be in this company."
As I made my way back to my cubicle, I could hear Maria laughing and talking about someone who had the gall to learn a lesson. And I knew they were talking about me.
