Elayne's POV
I seem to lose awareness of what the time says, but I'm sure that it has been more than five minutes, and he's still staring at me. How I want the floor to open so I can comfortably sink in. It will be so much better than the glances I'm getting from all of these people.
"Hello, I'm still standing here." I fake a smile with my mouth closed, holding my knapsack close to me as if it could get any closer. I adjust my glasses so it sits right on my nose. If I'm dying now, it's better to do it while being pretty so I'll look cute in the casket.
"Who are you?" The boss of the all asks me, and a shiver runs down my spine. One would be capable of pointing out that he isn't from an English speaking country, but he can speak it fluently.
"Sarah," I say, wearing no expression whatsoever so he or any of the three sentinels in the room would not be able to tell it's a lie.
"What is your real name?"
Fuck.
"I'm not gonna tell you." I say, running my tongue down my braces, and folding my arms across my chest.
"We are screwed!" Mikayla says once she hears his voice. I want to pull the device out from my ear, and smash it against the wall.
"That is completely okay." He shrugs, crossing his legs. My eyes can't help but land on his shoes. Man, they cost a fortune.
"Are you going to let me go in peace now?" I pop my eyes wide open, and do that thing where your whole lower lip goes into your mouth, and your upper teeth are quite visible.
"You make me laugh, and I'm just getting to know you."
"Yeah, I get told that a lot." I play along with him. I know this game, and I can play it too.
"You should." He nods as his eyes go from my head to toe. Not once, but twice.
"Are you gauging me to determine how I'm going to be killed since I'm not leaving?"
There's silence again, and I get are glances thrown randomly at me. The entirety of this feels awkward, but it is necessary that I remind myself that I put myself in this situation. I could have done something else.
Twenty-seven years on earth have been nothing, but phenomenal, but it's just the tenth hour of my twenty-eight year, and I'm not even sure I'll live to see the eleventh hour. They are all armed. A gun can be pulled out, and a trigger can be pulled, and I can be dead in no time. I have nothing to defend myself, and so thinking of an escape plan is completely useless. I still do the one thing that my subconscious says. I turn around, make a beeline for the door, and run.
The idea, evidently, isn't a good one, but I've never been one to sit or stand, and watch s**t hit the fan. Even if today is my last day on earth, it would be known that I made an attempt, and did not stand there to watch myself being killed.
I'm in someone's arms in no time. I scream, yell, punch, but his body is hard as brick, and it's all to no avail. He returns to the room with me hanging on his body. He takes a few steps before dropping me carelessly like I am a bag of possessions. The device falls out of my ear, making it impossible to hear Mikayla.
"Attento!" The boss yells. Saying I'm frightened is a complete understatement.
Translation - Careful
He most likely said 'shoot'. I close my eyes, and raise my hands up in the air to indicate that I surrender.
When thirty seconds go by, and my eyes are still tightly shut with my arms up, I want to open it, but maybe he's testing out reverse psychology on me, and waiting for me to open my eyes so the bullet will pierce through one of them.
I wait for another thirty seconds and when nothing happens, I open them, and drop my hands.
"Not only did you break into my house to steal, but when you get caught, you attempt to run. Tell me, who the f**k are you?" His once calm tone is now laced with anger, and I fear for my life.
He's on his feet now, walking towards where I am seated like one who has got no future. When he gets to where I am, he squats so the difference between our eye levels isn’t ample.
He places his hand on my chin, and my whole body goes numb. He tilts the hand placed on my chin so I’m looking directly in his eyes. This can as well be the cause of my death.
“I’ve been patient with you, and accommodated your interesting personality. I think it’s time you entertain mine.” He smiles a wicked smile that makes me almost pee my pants.
I can’t speak. Not that I don’t want to, but it is so f*****g difficult under circumstances like this.
“Answer the damn question!” He literally barks at me, and I want to start sobbing so I can gather pity from all around. Who am I fooling?
“Elayne Harris.” I mutter, loud enough for me to hear him.
“Interesting name.” He’s up on his feet, walking back to where he’s seated.
I now know that he has a scar that isn’t so noticeable. It runs from his canthus, and disappears at his cheek.
“May I know what gave you the nerves to come and steal from me?”
Yes, I know I got caught, and all. I shouldn't have come to steal from this man, but these questions are becoming wearying.
I don’t get the liberty of being quiet for one minute or thirty seconds. He’s squatting again, but a gun is pointed at my forehead this time.
“Go quiet for one more second, and your brain will be decorating my floor.” That statement has me crying. I’m shedding actual tears, and lord!
I search my brain for answers, but nothing comes up. I don’t want to die now — he may still kill me after all of this is over with.
“I wanted a challenge.”
That has him actually giggling. A funny sound that I cannot quite make out escapes his throat. He has a great sense of humour.
“Your traits are to die for.” He briskly walks toward the couch and sits. I have completely forgotten there are three other people here. He starts to laugh again, and I want to join him. It’s not a wonder how I find myself laughing with him, and he doesn’t even stop. We go on for about ten seconds before the whole room goes quiet.
“Teach me to be like you.” He says, and laughs for a little bit before his poker face returns once again.
“A thief who likes adventures. I guess we cannot judge the whole species, then. Our desires are different, aren't they?”
I nod.
“Are you going to kill me?” I mutter, tucking a loose braid behind my ear.
“No, but shut up, and let me think of what I will do with you.”
I sigh a breath of relief knowing full well that I am not dying today.
“Are you Alessio?”
He seems a bit taken aback by my question.
“Yes.Homework done properly.”
I nod and smile.
“You will marry me.”
I blink for a couple of seconds, take my glasses off, and push my head a little further as an indication that I didn’t quite get what he said.
“Pardon?”
“You will get married to me.”
“Can you buttress what you just said? My IQ seems to have dropped.”
“Yes, I know. It is why you came to steal from me,and think you’d get away with it.”
“Am I allowed to choose from a list of punishments that do not include death, and marriage?” I question, trying to see how fat or slim my chances are.
“Would you like to work as an escort in my organisation?”
I almost choke on my breath.
“Excuse me?”
“Would you like to sell companionship, s*x among others for money? These men aren’t young. They are old and like s*x more than thier families. What do you say?”
The truth is that I have nothing to say. I cannot marry this man.
“Marrying me seems like the only good thing here.”
“Why?”
He scratches his nose roughly before he says, “You have me asking myself so many questions. I don’t want to ask you. I’d like to figure it out myself.”
“Then, there is no need for me to marry you. Don’t you see. You’ve already kidnapped me. You can figure out whatever it is you want.” I shrug, telling him how big a fool he has been for his mind to not go in that direction.
“I think I’ve laughed enough tonight.” He shakes his head as though he’s trying not to get into any more banters with me.
“Procurati una stanza adatta e portala lì.” He tells one of the sentinels, and I’m scared.
“I told you I don’t speak Italian.”
“Thief, I’m not talking to you.”
"D'ora in poi, l'inglese dovrebbe essere parlato quando lei è in giro."
Translation - From now on, English should be spoken when she is around
Did you just tell them to kill me?
The one who caught me about to steal gets me to my feet, and leads me to the door.
"I haven't eaten anything all night?" I turn around to face him. He completely ignores me.
The sentinel leads me to my room, and the part where he says I'll marry him replays in my head over and over. It has to be a joke.
He opens the door to a room, and pushes me in there. I don't even get the chance to say 'jack robinson' before he shuts it and walks away. The door to this room isn't like the others that have codes. I can make it out of here tonight. I should be able to.
I try to open the door. Of course, he locked me in there. I'm not trustworthy enough to be left in this room.
While I'm sitting on the bed, and looking around me, I hear the door being opened. The sentinel walks into the room, drops a tray of food with water on the nightstand, and walks away. I will not eat the food. I'm still a wee bit paranoid.
I look around, and know that my whole existence is f****d up. What happens next? Is this a new chapter? Hell, I do not have a phone to contact anyone. I left mine back at the hotel in hopes that I'd have gotten the job done by now.
I begin to try to come up with different solutions, but they all seem like it would be a waste of labour.
I bang on the door, and yell for them to get me out of this damn place until my throat hurts. I begin to cry and beg them. I'm exhausted, and I fall to my knees, and fall asleep on the cold marble floor.

"Open the f*****g door!" I cry out, hitting the door with my fist. Somebody should explain to me how it is eleven o'clock, and I'm still locked inside this room with the food from yesterday night still on the nightstand.
I don't have any clothes. I don't have a f*****g toothbrush. I found one in the bathroom, but I'm not using it. My breath stinks, and worse of all, I don't have a mint gum that I can pop in my mouth to get rid of the stench.
I keep striking my fist at the door, and I've lost the feeling in them. I spread my palms out flat, and see how red they are.
I wait for hours, and while I'm at it, I figure this room has a balcony. Every thirty minutes, I run to it to see if I can get anyone to talk to, but no.
My eyes land on the clock, and I see that it is five o'clock. I rush to the balcony, and I see a very exasperated Alessio walking into the building.
"Can you tell them to open the door?" I yell.
His gaze comes up to meet mine, and clearly he isn't in the mood. I'm completely ignored.
