“You’re here to kill us” Lorien said finally finding his voice.
“You always were the smart one.” Darius answered, letting his words hang in the air. He stood unmoving, eyes fixed on them, a smile playing on his lips. He was enjoying this.
“Don’t make this difficult for yourselves. I promise you it will be swift and painless.” The alpha continued, his words not reflecting the desire in his eyes.
“Brother, let’s show them everything we’ve learned so far.” Lorien gestured to his brother. If they were going to die this night, they wouldn’t be going to the afterlife alone.
“I agree.” Was Kael’s answer to his brother as they stood back-to-back ready to take on their assailants.
Darius let out a sigh, disappointed that this would not be over smoothly. But no matter, there would be no miracle for the twins today.
“Get them.” The alpha signaled and the wolves descended on their prey.
Lorien was already moving, ducking under a blow and delivering a vicious strike to one of the ambushers. He shifted instantly and just then Kael leapt from his back, shifting midair before slamming into one of the oncoming attackers.
The clearing became a battlefield, a blur of snarling wolves and flashing teeth.
The alpha did not join the flurry, rather he circled watching as the other wolves rushed in.
Kael’s sank his teeth into one of his assailants, a pained howl echoed through the forest. But for every enemy he cut down, two more seemed to take their place. His breaths came in sharp gasps, his body a symphony of pain and exhaustion. The twins fought harder, their teamwork flawless, but they were outnumbered.
A howl too familiar rang throughout the forest reaching Kael’s ears, the sharp scent of blood that invaded his nostrils made him hesitate for a moment.
He was sent flying in the split second that he lost focus. It felt like an explosion had rocked his ribs. Pain spread through his side, sending shockwaves through his body and he could no longer maintain his wolf form.
He clutched the bleeding shoulder, where his arm was but moments ago and as he looked up, the sight before him confirmed his worst fear.
Lorien was on his knees, chest heaving, crimson flowing freely across it. A deep gash ran from his shoulder down to his ribs.
“Lorien!” Kael’s voice cracked as he tried to lunge, but very quickly found himself pinned to the ground by several arms.
Darius stepped forward, walking over slowly, “It’s over.” He said simply.
Kael thrashed, his vision blurring with fury and desperation. “You bastard-”
A claw pressed against his throat, cutting off his words. He could feel the warmth of his own blood, trickle down his throat as the sharp edge bit into his skin.
Darius crouched before him. His expression eerily calm as he spoke to the bleeding young man.
“I told you not to make this difficult. You would have been with your parents by now. I admired them you know, looked up to your father even. You may not believe this, but getting rid of them was very hard on me. Everyone knows- I’m sure you do too, that you twins are a blight upon their legacy and on our pack. But with your deaths, all will be made right.”
“What did we ever do to you? I want you to know I will be the one to kill you and I will take great joy in it”, Kael groaned clutching his bleeding shoulder as his strength waned, his body growing colder by the second.
The man standing before him had taken everything from him and his brother, sentencing them to a life as outcasts within the pack and now even their lives were not exempt from his greed.
He turned his head and met Lorien’s gaze.
“I envy your ability to say such things. If you are reborn, it would be my pleasure to rid this world of you once more.” The alpha answered, crouching down to meet Kael’s gaze.
Slowly he placed both his hands on Kael’s temples.
“Brother,” Lorien whispered, his voice barely audible.
The crack of Kael’s neck as Darius twisted, broke Lorien.
He lay there powerless to stop this evil beast from taking from him the only thing he had left in this world. His only consolation being that he would be joining his brother very soon.
As if on cue, Darius walked over, a large piece of sharp wood placed firmly in his blood-stained hands.
"Worry not, you’ll be seeing your brother soon. Let’s not keep him waiting.”
And with that he sank the wood into Lorien’s chest, and Lorien felt the darkness take him.
