Episode 4

“Today is a good day. A very good day.” The alpha muttered to himself. Darius stood on the rise overlooking the main courtyard, arms folded behind his back, watching the pack move like a colony of ants beneath him. The sun dipped low, casting an orange hue over the surrounding area. “If only you could see me now. There’s nothing stopping me from achieving everything we ever dreamed of.” He continued. If Ronn could see how far he had risen what would he say? “Who are you talking to?” The alpha didn’t turn to acknowledge the voice coming from the lady wrapped in his sheets, now leaning against the doorframe. “Just muttering to myself.” He finally answered after a lengthy pause before tuning to face the woman. There it was. That knowing smile. She knew he would not reject her. The sheets barely covered her silhouette, exposing just the right amount of flesh in the right places to arouse him. “Come to me, I have something for you.” She said coyly stretching out her arm to him. She had been a useful source of information many times on the thoughts of the commonfolk. That was what he liked to call them. Darius closed the distance between them, a breath separating their lips as he met her gaze. He gently traced his fingers on her thigh and then higher up her body, gently, delicately till they cupped her neck. “You interrupted a very important conversation. How many times have I told you not to interrupt me?” “I’m sorry. I will accept my punishment, but it seemed important” Fiona whispered and then slipped a piece of paper into his trousers. She pressed her pelvis against his, her excitement rising. “Of course you will.” Darius could now see her face flush red and her breathing increase as his fingers flirted with her curves, the parts he knew she liked to be touched. He pinned her arms up against the frame with one hand, steadying her with the other and spread her legs open with his foot. Her eyes shut, her breathing ragged in anticipation of her ‘punishment’. He ripped he sheets from her body, put her up against the rails on the rise and had her there. It was intense and passionate. She tried her best to control herself but she could not help the sounds that escaped her lips with each thrust. They went at it for several minutes, until they both erupted in climax. He finished up with her and left without a word. She was used to it by now Darius was never one to cuddle or pillow talk after. Deep down Fiona knew she was just a tool, a toy the alpha used to distract himself from time to time. But it did not bother her, all she wanted was to be his. It was enough for her. He descended the rise, boots crunching against the stone steps as he read the note His expression soured. He was being summoned. As he walked, a few lower-ranked wolves looked up, bowing their heads respectfully, even reverently. "Alpha," one muttered, a tone of awe in his voice. Darius nodded in acknowledgement as he strode through the village. The women’s whispers reached his ears. “I heard he’s going to name a Luna soon.” “Has to be Fiona, his favorite.” The voices hushed when they spotted him, but he caught enough. Fiona. Of course. It was no secret she warmed his bed frequently when it pleased him, so did a number of others. She was deserving of being his favorite. She was beautiful, cunning, and dangerous in her own right. He wasn’t in love with her, he had never been in love with anyone before, but he enjoyed her company and she knew how to please him, and was useful. A good match on the surface. But Darius wasn’t interested in mates. Not truly. A Luna was a title. A political necessity. Nothing more. Making sure no one was watching or following, he slipped down a secret path disappearing. Darius walked through the secret route alone. Things are falling into place, the alpha thought to himself. There were some hiccups but things were progressing as he wanted. What he did not appreciate was being summoned. And by leaving a note with Fiona? Just what was this person thinking. He had a lot of time to let his annoyance simmer. “Whatever alliance we have is merely a means to an end. In time I’ll get rid of him, once I have all I need.” Darius talked to himself as he marched. It took quite a while to get to the meeting point. A dead grove marked by a ring of ancient standing stones He looked around, observing the stones as he waited. The stranger had only introduced themselves as ‘M’. M was very cautious in concealing his true identity and true intentions. What was not hidden however, was the strength this person possessed. There was no need to test it, his instincts warned him. He had wondered severally what M was really after. “You took your sweet time getting here.” Darius spoke up, feeling the presence of the stranger. Of course, that was only because M wanted him to know. For a long time, there was no answer. Just the heavy, pressing stillness. “I had to make sure no one followed. You’ve done well, Alpha.” The voice was emotionless. Darius stiffened slightly, the only sign of unease betraying his usually unshakable demeanor. “I delivered what you wanted.” “The twins?” “Dead.” The figure stepped from the shadows then, cloaked in black, face hidden behind some wooden mask. No scent. Just presence. “But are they?” the voice asked softly. Darius’s jaw clenched. “You doubt me? I took care of it personally. Perhaps you should have done it yourself then. I am no errand boy.” Silence. M’s head tilted for a bit before he responded. “I expected it to be a little more…challenging for you, considering Eldric was their guardian. It seems I underestimated you. I am pleased. Improvements are being made on the elixir. I’ll make sure to add extras as a reward for you.” Anger flickered across Darius’s face, but he buried it quickly. “I don’t appreciate being summoned just for you to spit in my face.” A pause. M chuckled. He seemed amused for some reason. M tossed a pouch on the floor at Darius’ feet. “So quick to bare your teeth, Alpha. Have you forgotten who sharpened them for you?” He laughed softly, condescendingly. “This alliance, this… illusion of equality you delude yourself with is nothing more than fantasy. We are not equals. You are my blade, forged for a single purpose.” He paused, so his words would sink. “And when a blade dulls, I replace it.” Fury crackled under the alpha’s skin, but he said nothing. It took great self-control not to wipe the smug look that was probably hidden under the mask. M stepped back into the shadows and was gone like smoke in the wind. Darius stood alone, surrounded by silence once more. He crouched to pick up the pouch filled with vials of the elixir. He clenched his fist in humiliation. Just a little bit longer, just a little bit longer. He would savor M’s death, but for now he had to play his part.
