Queeneth stood confusedly
Of all the faces she expected to see today, Denise wasn't one of them, But there he stood, looking at her in the flesh, older but heartbreakingly familiar. That same look, defined jawline, deep brown eyes and the uneven smile that once made her heart flutter but later broke her heart
Into pieces.
She stood still, squeezing the file on her hand while mopping at Denise confusedly, a lot was going on, in her mind.
He blinked” Queen…Queeneth” Denise murmured, pointing at her surprisingly.
“You know each other?” George, who was standing beside Denise, asked while also looking confused with the way both parties were gazing at each other.
Queeneth's heart was pounding heavily like it was about to leave her chest. She opened her mouth wide open and closed again without uttering a single word, what could she even say?.
Denise cleared his throat, clearly trying to put himself together “We…we went to the same high school together”.
George quirked an eyebrow.“ wow it's indeed a small world”
Queeneth finally let out a small cough
“Very small indeed”she responded to Grorge
George gave a short laugh“Oh well I like people with history, Thank God you both know each other, at least we won't be needing too many introductions” He said while stepping backward into his office.
“We will be working together on a very special contract, So Denise will be working with us for the time being, you both will be working closely“ he added.
Closely?
Queeneth heart skipped like it's about to leave her body.
“Okay…sir”She responded while thinking about how to make her boss not get a clue on what is going on.
Tension began to spiral up.
As George walked out, Denise stepped a foot closer to her”Queeneth,,, can we talk?”
She just stood motionlessly, mopping at him like one who just saw a ghost, she doesn't know if she should be surprised, heartbroken, embarrassed or three of them at once. But she nodded calmly, then led him quietly to the hall. They ended up in the reception room. The moment the door shut, tension enveloped them like a shroud.
“You have a child?” Denise asked calmly, almost like a whisper.
Her heart skipped “How did you find out about this?” she asked furiously.
Denise couldn't say a word, he was just full of regrets and broken.
“So you knew?” Queeneth asked again, with so much pain in her eyes.
“He nodded”
She quickly turned to leave the premises when Denise held her back”I…found your blog sometime last year. That's how I recognized your username. I didn't know how to come plain”
Queeneth took a step back, dimmed her eyes in confusion and pointed straight to his face “hold on…you’re anonymous lover?” she asked with her voice shaking.
Denise nodded again, slowly this time”At first I didn't know it was you, I just got used to texting you, I liked how you wrote… you were so raw, you made me feel like someone was finally listening to me, I swear to God Queeneth I didn't know at first” he repeated.
Her mouth parted, she was overwhelmed by doubt” I can't believe, you lied to me. Again?”
“I didn't mean to” he replied quickly “ I swear Queeneth, immediately I noticed it was you, I didn't know how to face you. So I kept talking to you, I mean it was a lot easier that way”
“You left me, Denise. even after all the promises we made to each other, I never believed you could hurt me this way” she whispered, voice tight.”you left me when I needed you the most, I cried myself to sleep every night, trying to figure out why you never believed me”.
He closed his eyes a bit in regrets” I didn't know any better, I was young, I was afraid of my family…”
“Save it, I don't need all of these explanations”, she cuts in.”You were afraid but I was the one carrying the pregnancy at seventeen. Alone.”
The silence between them stretched painfully long
“I have changed”, he said wearing a guilty face”I regret my action every single day, please I want to right my wrongs”
She crossed her hands, trying to put herself together.”this isn't the place”she said.
Denise nodded calmly. “Please calm your nerves, I'm not here to force anything. But please, let me be part of my Child's life.I just want a chance.”he continued
She looked up at him, and for a moment, she saw a boy she once loved. The boy who made a promise to her, and swore he would never hurt her.
But then she remembered what she remembered what she went through, the pain, the rejection, the emotional torture and sleepless nights.
“I have lost words,” I don't know what I want from you” she said, voice cracking.
Denise took a step closer towards her,” then let me wait”
She turned and walked away before the tears fell, clutching her chest, as if that could hold in the chaos rising inside her.
Queeneth walked swiftly back to her office, brushing past the curious looks she was getting from the few of her colleagues in the hallway, her eyes red and swollen, her chest tight. It was way too much for her. Seeing Denise after these past years threw her off balance, and now finding out he was anonymous lover?
It was a cruel, horrible joke life was playing on her.
“What a life?” Queeneth brokenly asked.
At this point, she was not just scared of losing her job but also her heart.
She has done everything right to move on.She buried the past. She built a life for her daughter Rejoice. She worked her ass out. And now, the man who broke her, abandoned her, was sitting a few steps away asking for a second chance.
Her phone buzzed.
A message.
Anonymous lover: “I'll wait. No matter how long it will take”.
