The clearing was quiet except for the rustling of leaves overhead.
Ava stood across from Lycan King Darius, her arms crossed in frustration.
“I told you, I don’t know how to control this,” she said.
Darius raised an eyebrow.
“Control begins with understanding.”
“That doesn’t help,” Ava replied.
Darius moved suddenly.
He lunged toward her without warning.
Ava reacted instinctively.
Silver light burst from her hands.
The force slammed into Darius, pushing him several steps back before he regained his footing.
Silence fell.
Ava stared at her hands in shock.
“I didn’t mean to do that.”
Darius straightened slowly, clearly unimpressed by the force but intrigued nonetheless.
“That is the problem,” he said.
Ava frowned.
“What do you mean?”
“You are not thinking,” he replied. “You are reacting. Your power is tied to instinct.”
Ava exhaled sharply.
“So I just… let it happen?”
Darius nodded.
“Again.”
Ava hesitated, then raised her hand.
This time she focused on the energy flowing through her body.
The silver light appeared again—stronger.
Darius smiled faintly.
“Good.”
But his expression quickly turned serious.
“You must learn quickly.”
Ava’s stomach tightened.
“Why?”
Darius looked toward the horizon.
“Because something powerful is already looking for you.”
