Back in Shadowfang territory, Alpha Kael Blackthorn stood in the council hall, unable to focus on anything before him. The reports from his warriors blurred together, meaningless compared to the persistent ache in his chest. Something was wrong. The mate bond should have been completely severed the moment he rejected Ava. That was the law of wolves. That was how it had always worked. Yet the bond still lingered. Faint, but undeniably present. Kael clenched his jaw, pacing slowly across the stone floor. Every step echoed in the silent hall. “Alpha,” Elder Rowan said carefully, watching him, “you have been distracted since the ceremony.” Kael stopped abruptly. “The bond didn’t break,” he admitted. Rowan’s brows furrowed. “That is not possible.” “I know,” Kael replied sharply. “But I can still feel her.” A strange tension settled over the room. Rowan stepped closer. “There is something else you should know.” Kael turned toward him. “Our scouts detected traces of lunar magic in the northern forest last night.” Kael’s stomach tightened. Lunar magic. Ancient. Rare. Dangerous. His mind immediately went to Ava, though he refused to say her name aloud. It couldn’t be connected. And yet… For the first time since the rejection, doubt crept into his thoughts. What if he had made a mistake?
