The clearing fell silent as Ava stared at the glowing mark on her wrist. “So what happens now?” she asked. Darius folded his arms. “Now we train.” The word made Ava uneasy. “You mean fight training?” “Magic,” he corrected. Ava blinked. “Werewolves don’t use magic.” “Normal wolves don’t,” Darius replied. He pointed toward the crescent mark on her wrist. “But you are not a normal wolf.” Ava exhaled slowly. Her entire life she had believed she was weak. An omega. Someone who barely mattered in the pack. Now the Lycan King was telling her she carried the power of a goddess. It felt unreal. Darius knelt beside a fallen branch and placed it upright in the dirt. “Focus on the branch,” he instructed. Ava stared at it. “Now what?” “Imagine the moon’s power flowing through you.” Ava closed her eyes. She remembered the warmth she had felt beneath the full moon. The energy in her veins. Slowly she raised her hand. Silver light gathered in her palm. The branch suddenly lifted into the air. Ava gasped. It hovered for several seconds before dropping to the ground. Darius nodded with satisfaction. “You see?” Ava stared at her hand again. But deep inside her chest, one thought lingered. What would Kael say if he saw this?
