Sunday morning, I was the first to wake up. I couldn't believe I was able to fall asleep at all. My body was exhausted from running for my life. I got up out of my bed and shuffled to the bathroom.
I went to wash my face and caught a glimpse of myself and I looked like a wreck. My eyes were purple and puffy and I still had mud in my hair. I thought I should get my shower before Morgan and Trish got up because they probably looked just as rough like me.
I started the shower and pulled my mud-caked hair out of the tangled ponytail. I stepped in and heard a knock at the door. It was my dad. His deep voice asking if he should start breakfast for Morgan Trish and me.
Yes please Ray Ray. Trish yelled from my room, still half asleep.
I finished my shower and opened the door to Morgan holding her bathroom bag. She smiled as she brushed past me to set up her morning routine items. She looked unfazed by last night's adventure. I finished brushing out my long brown hair and brushed my teeth and left Morgan to get her shower. I walked back to my room hearing dad singing from the kitchen while cooking what sounded like bacon. This was our usual weekend routine. Trish and Morgan sleep over and dad cooks breakfast for us.
I started to get my room picked up and I looked over to where Trish was sleeping and all I could see of her was her blonde hair in a messy bun otherwise she was covered completely by a heap of blankets.
How does she even breathe? I thought to myself. Morgan came back into the room and grabbed her phone. She was texting her mom to check-in.
Breakfast Ladies! my dad yelled from down the hall.
Trish sat straight up and said oh thank you, lord. She got up and went right to the kitchen and grabbed her plate. Morgan and I followed her laughing at each other knowing that's the only way to wake Trish up on the weekend.
Thanks Ray Ray. You rock. Said Trish as she stuffed her face with bacon and eggs.
Thanks, Trish I know I rock but it's still nice to hear. He chuckled.
He sat at the table with his plate and said.
So girls, what's the plan for today?
Trish with a mouthful of eggs grumbled. I have practice today. But I can wipe the floor with you at basketball later if you're up for the embarrassment old man. Trish bragged.
Trish is competitive and participates in almost every sport available. Trish has 3 older brothers who are all athletic and well known for their athletic ability in our school.
Lucky for you Trish I have to work today. I’ll have to get a rain check on that, my dad joked.
My dad, Ray, is one of the best auto mechanics in town. It's just been him and I since mom is gone. She died in a car accident when I was 5. All the single moms in town have been trying to get his attention for years. He said he's not interested. He tells everyone he had his fairytale love with my mom, Marcie. They had met when they were 10 and my dad said he knew he was going to marry her from the moment he met her. He has a picture of them from high school in his shirt pocket. He always has it with him.
We were laughing and sharing stories while we ate. I loved mornings like these. I smiled looking around the table.
Morgan snapped me out of my daydream telling dad that she has to work later today. She works part-time at the library. It's the perfect job for her. She is super intelligent. One of her favorite things to do is read through the books and find grammatical errors. It's dark, quiet, and peaceful just like her.
I’m going to work on some edits for the yearbook. Nothing too exciting. I said flatly, stabbing at the last few eggs on my plate. Which is how I liked it, I thought to myself.
Dad looked at the clock and said shoot I gotta get going. I'll see you guys later. He set his plate in the sink. He kissed me on the top of my head and grabbed his keys.
Be good, he shouted before the door closed.
Trish scooped up the last of the bacon and said while crunching on it, so what are we thinking? Movie later? Maybe the mall?
Morgan was scrolling through her phone looking as if she wasn't listening. Then she suddenly stopped and snapped her head up looking at Trish with a shocked expression.
I said what's up? looking from Morgan to Trish.
TRISH!!! Morgan shouted. Making Trish jump and almost choke on her breakfast.
DID YOU POST THE VIDEO OF US FROM LAST NIGHT?
Trish shrugged and said yeah why? I told you guys I was recording.
I stood up with my hands flat on the table and said you didn't tell us you posted it. Now everyone knows we were there.
Chill guys, it's fine. Trish tried to ease the tension.
Nobody even saw it yet I bet, It's not even 9 o'clock yet. She explained.
It's trending…... Morgan said matter of factly. Holding her phone up so Trish could see.
Trish grabbed the phone and said wow this is the most views I have ever had. She squealed excitedly.
My heart was in my throat. We are going to be in so much trouble I said as I ran my hands through my hair anxiously. I can’t believe you did that without asking us. I dropped back in my chair defeated.
We are not going to get in trouble, Scarlett, you worry too much. She was still looking at the screen with glee.
Wow look at all these comments Trish said. She then proceeded to read a few aloud.
Jared_420: Wow you guys are badass touring that haunted ass place.
SpicyCatxoxo: I wish you guys would have caught a ghost on camera.
RedBull86: Yall should have spent the night and saw if anything tried to attack you. Lol
She laughed as she read along. These guys think were so cool and brave. They didn't see scarlet run for her life though. Trish teased.
Oh shut it, Trish, as I recall you were running for your life right behind me. I said.
Who cares who was scared and how fast we ran. We weren't supposed to be there and now everyone knows we were. What are we gonna say when someone asks us what we were doing breaking into the old abandoned house, Morgan interrupted.
I’ll figure out what to do. Trish said.
And what are you going to say? I saw green lightning so I ran out in a downpour to inspect the old abandoned house for suspicious activity. I said in a mocking tone. They're going to think you're a nut. I added.
No, I’ll think of something, just try to relax. Trish said.
Morgan stood up quietly and cleared her dishes from the table. I’ll see you guys later. I’m going to head home and check in with my mother before I go to work. We’ll talk about this later on.
Try not to stress Scarlet. Maybe nothing will come of it. Morgan said reassuringly as she patted my shoulder.
Yeah, Scar it will be fine. Trish couldn't stop smiling. We're the coolest seniors in town. Her smile was so big it looked painful. Nothing seems to phase Trish for too long, I wish my brain worked like that. I thought to myself.
