Maya's happiness was short-lived.
A few weeks after the battle, scouts returned with troubling news. The Shadow Pack was regrouping. They were forming an alliance with another pack, the Bloodmoon Pack.
Kai called an emergency meeting in the pack house. All the senior members gathered around the large wooden table, their faces grim.
"The Shadow Pack isn't finished with us," Kai announced, his voice cold. "They've joined forces with the Bloodmoon Pack. Together, they outnumber us two to one."
Maya's blood ran cold. "What do they want?"
"They want revenge," Kai said. "For their defeat. They won't stop until they've destroyed us, or until we destroy them."
Kai turned to the pack. "We need to prepare for war. Train harder. Build our defenses. We cannot afford to lose. If they defeat us, we will lose everything, our home, our families, our lives."
Kai looked at Maya, his expression softening. "But we're not going to lose. We have something they don't. We have each other."
Kai dismissed the meeting, and the pack members filed out, their faces filled with determination. Maya stayed behind, her mind racing.
"Kai," she said, her voice trembling. "What if we don't win?"
Kai took her hands in his. "We will win. I won't let anything happen to you, Maya. I promise."
"I'm not afraid for myself," she said. "I'm afraid for you. For the pack. For everyone I've come to love."
Kai pulled her into his arms and held her tightly. "I will fight for you. For us. For our future. I will never give up."
Maya felt tears prick at her eyes. "I can't lose you, Kai. I can't."
"You won't," he said firmly. "I promise you, Maya. We will survive this. And when it's over, we will have the life we've always dreamed of. Together."
