AJ's POV
The car ride is silent and fraught with tension, at least on my side. Jason is controlled and unaffected, and I long for the ability to detach from situations as well as he can.
I close my eyes and silently say a prayer. I don't know what we're going there to face, but it's not going to be pretty. I feel his hand enclose mine and squeeze. "It'll be fine, baby." He lifts my hand up to his lips and kisses it. "I'll make sure of it."
"If you think to make me wait in the car to be your getaway driver, you're in for something else."
He huffs a short laugh. "Fine. We'll make sure of it."
I eye him. "Okay."
"But I'd like it better if you'd stay"
"No."
He sighs. "I guess I could use a sidekick."
To my abject horror, I feel my eyes watering. "This isn't the time."
