Chapter 10
Lauren and I have a final inspection at a property I used to manage. The time is flexible as Ralph, the tenant, has already left and handed in the keys. Now would be the time to go, and get out of the office for a bit.
We are going together because it’s nice to have company, and because I know the place – Ralph was one of my favourite tenants.
We head off. I bury my curiosity about ‘this and that’ and say to Lauren, ‘Let’s not talk about Bruno or even think about him. There is nothing we can do but wait for the tenants to email us.’
‘That’s fine with me. I’d be happy if I never heard his name again.’
We sit in silence as if there is nothing else in the world to talk about. I start to think about the place we are going to.
