TWO FACE

1607 Words
For several seconds, nobody moved. Elena stared at the girl standing across from her. The girl stared back. Same face. Same hair. Same eyes. Even the small scar near Elena's eyebrow was there. Marcus looked from one to the other. "What the hell..." "Don't move," Adrian said. Neither Elena nor the other girl moved. The room was silent except for the faint hum of the lights. Elena slowly lifted her right hand. The other girl did the same. Marcus took a step backward. "They're copying each other." "No," Adrian said. His eyes remained fixed on the second Elena. "Not exactly." The other girl smiled. Elena didn't. That was the first difference. Adrian noticed it too. "Elena," he said quietly. "Which one?" Both girls answered at the same time. "Me." Marcus's face went pale. The second girl laughed. It was Elena's laugh. Perfectly. Elena felt a chill crawl down her arms. "Who are you?" The girl tilted her head. "I could ask you the same thing." "I'm Elena." "So am I." Adrian stepped between them. "Nobody moves." The second girl looked at him. "You still do that." Adrian's face changed. Elena noticed. "You know her." "No." The girl smiled. "You know me." Adrian's expression hardened. "Don't listen to her." "Why?" "Because she knows things you don't." The girl laughed again. "That's because I remember." Elena looked at her. "Remember what?" "Everything." The word hung in the room. Elena's chest tightened. "What do you remember?" The girl walked toward her. Adrian immediately blocked the way. The girl stopped. "You still protect her." Adrian didn't answer. "You always did." "Who are you?" She looked at him. "The girl you left behind." Elena's eyes widened. Adrian went completely still. Marcus looked between them. "Adrian?" He didn't respond. Elena stared at the second girl. "You were the girl from the red door." The girl smiled. "Finally." Elena's stomach dropped. "You came through the door." "Yes." "You looked like me." "I was made to." "Made?" The girl nodded. "They needed someone who could open the doors." Elena looked at Adrian. "And I could?" "You could." The second girl corrected him. "She couldn't." Adrian looked at her. "Enough." The girl ignored him. "She was never supposed to be the one." Elena felt confused. "Then who was?" The girl pointed at herself. "Me." Silence. Elena stared at her. "But why do we look alike?" The girl's expression softened. "Because they used you to make me." Marcus stepped closer. "What does that mean?" She looked at him. "It means I'm not your twin." She looked back at Elena. "I'm her copy." Elena's mind struggled to process it. "A copy?" "Not a perfect one." "What makes us different?" The girl smiled. "You." She pointed at Elena's chest. "You have something I don't." "What?" "A memory." Elena frowned. "Which one?" The girl stepped closer. "The first one." Adrian closed his eyes briefly. Elena noticed. "What is the first memory?" He opened his eyes. "The one before you remember yourself." Elena's confusion deepened. "I don't understand." "You don't have to." The second girl smiled. "Not yet." The room suddenly trembled. The lights flickered. A low mechanical sound came from behind the walls. Marcus looked around. "What is happening?" Adrian turned toward the door. "The game is changing." The second girl nodded. "Because it found both of us." A screen appeared on the wall. Two names appeared. SUBJECT 001 SUBJECT 002 Then: IDENTIFY THE ORIGINAL. Elena stared. A timer appeared beneath them. 10:00 Marcus swore under his breath. "Ten minutes?" Adrian moved toward the screen. "There has to be another way." The speaker crackled. "There is always another way." Adrian looked up. "Then tell us." "One subject leaves." Elena's heart dropped. The second girl didn't look frightened. Instead, she looked almost relieved. "That's what I expected." Elena turned toward her. "You knew this would happen." "I've been waiting for it." "Why?" "Because I want to know which of us deserves to leave." Elena stared. "You can leave." "No." The girl shook her head. "Not without you." "Why?" "Because if you leave, I disappear." Elena felt a chill. "What?" "You are the reason I exist." The timer continued. 08:42 Adrian stepped forward. "Listen to me." Both girls looked at him. "This game is designed to make you choose." The second girl smiled. "And you know that because you've played it." "Yes." "Then you know how it ends." Adrian didn't answer. Elena looked at him. "You do." He remained silent. "How does it end?" "Someone makes a choice." "And?" "Someone loses." The second girl smiled. "He's afraid to tell you what losing means." Elena looked at her. "What does it mean?" "You forget." The timer reached 07:50. Elena's stomach tightened. "Forget what?" "Everything." She touched her temple. "The games." "Yes." "The building." "Yes." "Adrian?" The girl nodded. "Even him." Elena looked at Adrian. He seemed more troubled by that than anything else. "Then why don't we just refuse?" The girl laughed. "Because it won't let us." The lights went out. A voice whispered through the darkness. "Begin." When the lights returned, the room had changed. The door was gone. The walls were sealed. Only the three of them remained. Then a table appeared in the center. On it were three objects. A photograph. A key. And a red ribbon. Elena recognized the ribbon immediately. She had seen it in the memory of her sixth birthday. Her mother's hand had been holding it. The second girl reached toward it. Adrian stopped her. "Don't touch that." She looked at him. "Why?" "Because it's hers." The girl smiled. "How do you know?" "Because I remember." Elena looked at him. "What happened to that ribbon?" Adrian didn't answer. The second girl reached for it again. This time Elena stopped her. "Leave it." The girl looked at Elena. "Why?" "I don't know." "Exactly." Elena stared at the ribbon. Something about it felt important. She reached for it. The moment her fingers touched the fabric, a memory struck her. A hallway. Her mother crying. Her father shouting. Adrian standing beside a red door. And a little girl running toward him. Not Elena. The other girl. Elena pulled her hand away. She gasped. The second girl stared at her. "You saw it." Elena nodded slowly. "You were there." "Yes." "You were the one running toward Adrian." "Yes." "Why?" The girl's eyes softened. "Because I thought he was coming to save me." Adrian looked away. The girl continued. "He wasn't." Elena looked at him. "What happened?" Adrian's voice was quiet. "I chose you." The second girl smiled sadly. "That's what he always says." Elena looked at her. "What really happened?" The girl looked directly at Adrian. "Tell her." Adrian said nothing. "Tell her what you did." "Stop." "You left me behind." "Stop." "You closed the door." His expression cracked. "I had to." "No." The girl shook her head. "You wanted to." Elena stared at Adrian. "Did you?" He looked at her. "I was six years old." The girl laughed bitterly. "So was I." The timer reached 05:12. The screen changed. MEMORY TEST. Three questions appeared. WHO OPENED THE RED DOOR? WHO CLOSED IT? WHO CAME OUT? Elena stared at the questions. The second girl smiled. "Now you understand." "Understand what?" "Why they need you." Elena looked at the first question. "I opened the door." The second girl shook her head. "No." Elena frowned. "You did." "No." "Then who?" The girl pointed at Adrian. "He did." Adrian didn't deny it. Elena's eyes widened. "You opened it." "Yes." "Why?" "To get you." "But you found her." He looked at the second girl. "Yes." "Then where was I?" He hesitated. "I don't know." Elena stared. "You don't know?" "I couldn't see you." The second girl stepped closer. "Because you were already outside." Elena looked at her. "Outside where?" The girl pointed toward the photograph. Elena picked it up. It showed the Vespera lobby. Little Elena stood near the entrance. Her mother was beside her. And behind them was the second girl. Elena's heart stopped. "That's me." The second girl shook her head. "No." She pointed at the girl beside Elena's mother. "That's me." Elena looked again. Two identical children. One inside the building. One outside. Her breathing became shallow. The photograph had been taken on the same day. At the same time. Two girls. One building. One secret. Adrian stepped closer. "Now you understand why I couldn't tell you." Elena looked at him. "No." Her voice was steady now. "I understand why you were afraid." The timer reached 03:00. The speaker came alive. "Final question." The room became silent. A single sentence appeared. WHICH GIRL DOES ADRIAN PROTECT? Elena looked at him. The second girl looked at him too. Adrian closed his eyes. The speaker continued. "Choose." The second girl whispered: "Tell her." Adrian opened his eyes. Elena waited. He looked at one girl. Then the other. And finally said: "I don't know anymore." The timer stopped. For the first time, the speaker said nothing. Then the entire building went silent. The second girl smiled. Elena frowned. "Why are you smiling?" The girl looked at her. "Because that wasn't the answer the game expected." "What does that mean?" "It means we found another way." The wall behind them opened. A staircase appeared. But unlike the others, this one led upward. Toward the floors they had already crossed. Elena stared at it. "Where does that lead?" The second girl looked at Adrian. "To the beginning." Elena's heart tightened. "The beginning of what?" The girl smiled. "Your first day." Then the lights went out. And when they came back on, the second girl was gone.
